@tator3222 to be brief, the run is about 16 feet by 12 feet square. The henhouse is about 3 feet by 7 feet. Right now I have 30 hens and a busy rooster. My original plan was to get 12 hens per year culling the three year old birds thus always having 24, but now I take any that are given to me and hatch as many as I can and try to butcher the roosters and oldest about 10 at a time, I always have at least 15 layers for my family of 4.
I have chickens but not sure if they will hatch eggs non-broody birds. They refuse to sit on the eggs wondering if I should get a heritage chicken (Dorking) for chick rearing.
@randomnessinchoas I'm not sure if there is anyway to make a hen go broody, but when she is you will know it as soon as you try to take her eggs, she'll puff up all defensive and get mad.
i have four chickens, i barly got them this month, all hens, we dont have a rooaster cause they dont allow roasters where we leave but only chickens, and i live in washington where its cold, i hope soon they lay eggs (:
@quailjailss thank you, the last 3 times we had our hens seperated in a cage alone in the cool garage to hatch out eggs themself we had about 9 out of 10 hatch and survive. But the last time I did it this way in the henhouse not seperated from the other chickens we only had 7 out of 15, some got broken and others were only partly incubated and dead in the shells. I have no room in the garage right now so I have to do it this way unfortunatly but 50% is better than none.
@FarmerGrant011 I normally put 10 or so under her and have had great success, since I know she can handle 10 I figured Iwould push her to find her limit. I'm not sure how many I had but looks like 13 or 14. As soon as I closed the henhouse door she covered them all back up and instinct willhave her rotate the outer eggs in and the inner eggs out so they will be evenly incubated.

Well, true. I rather have 7 chicks then none. Are the other hens leaving the babies alone?

Did she have a good hatch rate? Very pretty flock btw.
