@zowmaster Email, jk... it took some time though.. it is just a datastream that is send from the Orbiter of Mars then send to earth and encoded from data to pictures.. just like your browser does.
so if this is meant to be the `opportunity` rover then how come you hear them say our first look at another world.........i think theyre forgetting they sent `Spirit`
@bjm351 Well the place Opportunity landed was territory never seen with human eyes. The same can be said for any other spacecraft that lands on Mars. There are so many geological characteristics of Mars, one space landing can't count for the entire planet. When Curiosity successfully lands (fingers cross) the area it's exploring will be different from what Spirit and Opportunity have seen and once again, will be a first for humans to explore.
@bubblinbrownsugar616 well then they shouldve said a new area of Mars, not a new world! anyway the other rover has taken 5 years to travel 7 km and sent 10 million pics of the same old rocks and tyre tracks ( wich dont show up on google Mars) and hasnt really justified its huge price tag. theyre an absolute waste of time and money, i wouldve thought in 2011 we would be sending something decent to explore the planet not souped RC cars that get bogged and cant climb mountains etc!! my 2 cents lol

Uh... you do realize that the video of the bouncing bubble shell is an animation, right? That it's not actual images being transmitted from Mars, right? Only images shot *FROM* the rover are real and being transmitted from Mars, right? You do understand the difference between images taken by the rover and animations showing the rover, right? That they didn't have cameras set up on Mars, exactly where the rover was going to land, awaiting its arrival, right? I hope so. I really, really hope so.
Dude, i mean 4:32, you can see the dataflow in the list behind the real photo. Ofcourse i know the animation isn't real lol. Then at 5:23 you can see the images popuping up. Thats what i mean.
OK, I see. When you said "bits flying over" I thought you were referring to 0:53 (dirt getting thrown around). I don't think of bits as "flying", but getting transmitted, no different than from a digital broadcasting station on earth, just farther.
With that cleared away, I will say watching this landing succeed in January 2004 was truly an inspiration to me as well. I'm an engineer, and I can certainly identify with moments like this.

Yeah this is cool and all but really it's kind of boring. It's like throwing a rover onto the nevada desert. Where is the exciting streaming videos or the remote control car racing...we'll look back on this in 20 years and think of how pathetic we were.
You must not know a whole lot about the history of science and engineering achievements. This one, while great, is probably one of very few you happen to know about, because it happened to be on TV.
This, in my opinion, is well spent money! Hope one day the money the world spend for military goes to the searching of knowledge or to improve the human condition!
amazing u americans are something special all u need now is a good leader to guide you vote out bush and vote in obama just imagen how he would inspire scientist like kennedy did in the past
President Bush actually lit a fire under NASA and reenergized the department to get us back to the moon and an eventual manned mission to Mars. So suck it.
"A cheese-eating French surrender monkey"? Mmmfffsnort snicker nyuk nyuk. Where (and what bygone era) does this daveatx dude come from? His words are so out, they're not even comments, more like comets.
I understand what your saying. Please don't believe all Americans are as ignorant as daveatx. Obviously he (or she) is the 29% that still thinks Bush is doing a good job as President.
Getting back to the topic, personally, I love the fact that if they want humans to land on Mars, it HAS to be a worldwide event not just NASA or ESA or JAXA alone. This is just absolutely...out of this world!!! LOL!!! :)
at 1:44 that guy keeps hitting him and hitting him,the other guy is crying but everyone thinks hes happy at 1:53 hes trying to bear hug the guy to death
by choking him down and everyone thinks hes giving him a friendly hugg,at 2:03 he try's to give him a right hook punch, the another guy stops him first,2:18 he's mad,you can see he was never happy at ALL
And yet, still so underrated. The average schmuck probably doesn't even realize that they are still going. Truly NASA's greatest success since the moon landing.
How did the pictures come back so fast?

It's showing the currant commands that the rover is acting on, Not necessarily the data that they are receiving from the vehicle.

command's are data... data != photo's..

This'nt isnt a hollywood movie mate. If you want "action" go hire a movie.
Reality involves HARD WORK. There is absolutely nothing "pathetic" about what these people have achieved.

or was that Spirit?
