  • Musica Latina?, acaso solo los cubanos hacen musica latina?

  • @Pianotec - yes, as DJKAYZEE also comments, timba uses BOTH clave directions and BOTH types of clave patterns (rumba and son). In terms of how the clave affects the dancers that is really subject to interpretation. In general, rumba clave is funkier and more syncopated, which certainly makes things more challenging for the musicians. Whether dancers can really tune in to this depends on how musical they are!

  • Is 2-3 Rumba clave present in Timba ? most of the musics seem to play in3-2 with some added measures sometime but no orientation change, to my ears.

My questions are : does a feel for 2-3 induce a different phrasing (syncopating) while dancing on Timba music ?

I feel that if I dance in 2-3 , very few partners catch my rythm totally.

Timba music seem to be more 3-2 clave oriented, but as of its less.

contrasted 2 measures rythm, I used to dance it in 2-3....

Any one can help me understand?

  • @Pianotec timba uses both, and even though it does use the son clave, there are many songs that have the rumba clave

i think your confusing 3-2 and 2-3 with son and rumba clave,

both claves can be played in either 3-2 or 2-3

  • @DJKAYZEE Thank you , no I listened to 14 Timba "standards" (I will send the list) , and heard all of them with a 3-2 clave orientation (some could be in rumba clave for sure, but I did not test that at that time).

I believe that it is not as easy to hear the clave orientation in Timba, than in Son, or older salsas...

Does it make a noticeable change for dancers ? (3-2 or 2-3) , or may be only to more advanced dancers ?... (Los VanVan most recent tunes, Pupy, etc...cuban music)

  • @Pianotec you're right about the clave not being as noticable, and as far as dancing goes, Timba takes the casino dancing to a whole another level

but as long you dance the 3-2 in casino style everything should be fine

there are some dances that are incorporated in timba dancing that not "advance dancers" in NY salsa would not be able to do.

which dancing are you inclined towards more?

  • @DJKAYZEE Hello, thanks for the answer. I feel the rythm, and I like for instance to dance one twoo......syncop, or 4 th beat, or even Son Montuno rythm. In France most dancers are dancing on1 , OK but it render less on syncopated parts. On2 (Mambo) seem to be more adapted to more Portorican oriented music, often 2-3 clave, also. easy to get cheated in comprehension of rythm.. I also like to dance on2 even if the music is not, but in anycase as a novice dancer I am limited...

  • @DJKAYZEE Happy Christmas to you BTW !

  • @DJKAYZEE HI, I "naturally" dance 1,2 .... 3 , unsure this is the son montuno phrasing...or Rumba... it allow to have a good use with the last beat of the 3 side of the clave. Being not experienced enough yet to have the casino passes I know in place whith that phrasing.... but as I like it I will work on that, (when trying to dance more usually (and on1) I felt easily on a 2-3 sensation, it differs from the one generally danced, as you stated...

  • i like her teaching, but timba is not cuban jazz

and latin is not a genre, Timba is so much more than jazz

  • @DJKAYZEE I don't understand your statement, this video does not mention such a thing at any time... Please clarify... Thanks and Happy Holidays!

  • @mascuba yes, i understand, but the title of the video is a bit presumptuous and anglo centric,

its like saying the basics of anglo music, or western music

its better if it was referring to afro-cuban derived music

  • @DJKAYZEE Thanks! Stay cool... Peace :-)

  • @DJKAYZEE i think latin is a genre, it just covers many sub-genres... classical is a genre, spanning over 1000 years of music, but its still a genre

  • @slapmyfunkybass thats a very arrogant and anglo centric view point,

latin is a genre only if you call anglo a genre too, and anglo would have to include everything from jazz and funk to hip hop and rock

  • nice one!

  • Wow Impressionante! :)

  • YES

    we will follow that tradition!!

  • Isn't she the one that sings in The Sims 3 too?

  • she can play all those instruments.....

  • Rebeca,, are you the young lady that performs so well with Mr. E., Sheila E., and Tito Puente in the DVD recorded live in L.A. several years ago?

  • @southphilly42

Yes Rebeca is the same piano player playing on that video with Sheila E, Tito Puente, etc.

    Thanks

  • GREAT VIDEO

  • Thanks for this Rebeca. I'm currently doing an essay for my solo performance exam and Latin is my chosen theme, but I'm interpreting a couple Santana arrangements in a Bossa Nova style, i.e. changing the bass and drums. This is really helpful though for the historical context! Matt

  • Thanks for sharing this video. I just discovered it today, I wish I knew about it before, it is very helpful. By the way you are amazing, let me know if you ever come come to England, I would love to invite you to our University for a series of masterclasses.

  • Rebeca...I saw how effortlessly you played and I immediately became dismayed and depressed as it seems I will never attain anything close to the level you play at. Then I felt actually more inspired and determined to improve myself. I heard you had a tutorial but I cannot find it anywhere. Can you help me find it. I believe you are the greatest female latin pianist in the world and cannot wait to see you perform in person near me (Sacramento)

  • i love latin culture. my moms latino so i grew up on this stuff, but i like to mix latin with metal. ''latin metal'' :)

  • @gothydude Could you tell me what is LATIN CULTURE ? ... We are all different in culture . Especially southamericans have nothing in common with afro-caribeans like puertoricans or dominicans . Actually south and central american are differnt themselves not to say with the afro caribeans . They in this island just speak the same language like us but our cultures are very diferent .

Nowdays latin music accordign to corporate music is only caribean music which is african in roots not latin .

  • Ricardo: The foundations of the son yes! The son comes from Changui which is a development of the French Contradance brought to Santiago de Cuba by Haitians.

  • it's rhumba

  • that is sooo stupid of how certian people lurk & seekout places to share they're unwanted stupidity....when they can just simply shutup & don't comment...or even better yet.....go somewhere else with they're stupid comments. there "HAS TO BE" a stupid & ignorant section that will except them.

  • Thanks for the information,Maestra!

  • Great!

  • Rebeca..HOLA!!! Hey, can you do an instructional on how to find the "1" in salsa music? You could really help a gringo, ya know? Gracias chica y siguelo que estas haciendo!! Nos apreciamos mucho!!!

  • she's Rebeca Mauleon from cuba

  • You have incredible talent. I love this piece!

  • latin covers a lot of different styles:

salsa, merengue, bolero, latin rock, latin jazz...

    they have similarities between them..

so stop calling this video ridiculous

  • Yeah this was very good. She's extremely knowledgeable. I do have a quesiton, though, how come YOUTUBE does not a Latin music category? (At least I couldn't find one) :)

  • Ahhh me dieron ganas de bailar

  • Hey thanks a lot, very good insights, rhythm is what it's all about. Tricky beats, wish I could get a better feel for them...

  • not really

  • She looks like Madonna doesn't she?

  • What are you doing!!! Teaching how to use the weel?. Too much bla, bla, bla, and nothing solid. You need to move on!!!!

  • Rebeca Thank you for you book 101 montunos,

I got the book in 2002 I dint play piano, with

the help of you book ,and El maestro Freddy

I learned just a little bit.

Thank you to admirador y compatriota

    Aldo

  • Don't worry about all the nonsence comment Rebecca, you can really play the piano, what a talent go girl.

  • thank you so much Rebecca, I am a former "pro" "pop"/motown/country/blues bass player , now coming back to music as my day gig retirement approaches , this time as a sax/bass/ harmonica player, who WANTs to play Conga... With a purely Anglo heritage , I was having great difficulty getting the feel of Latin music, which I LOVE ... this helped more than anything ... !

  • Hi GUYS, You were not even born when it all started to know who is right/wrong. The origin might be cuban/african (rumba at the time of slavery) but it evolved into salsa thanks to the Puerto rican. The Puerto Ricans the marketers of salsa. Also putting racist comments is JUST NOT ACCEPTABLE. I went for salsa dancing and a guy from Guinee Bissau believes the salsa music is african and not even cuban or caribbean. ....even more ignorant. Please give us a favor and do not talk for nothing.

  • *clears throat* thanks for sharing this kind of knowledge with most people; i have certainly loved the book entitled 101 montunos.

  • That music is Cuban and it is time to give credit to the cubans for it.

  • lol...WOW, what ignorance....haha

  • Yeah! She is misleading everyone intoo believing that that music is Latin. No, it is Afro-Cuban.

  • haha...your into this whole ignorant comment too?!?! Man you guys really need to learn, because actually what we know today as "salsa" started in New York and Puerto Rico. Now yes it came from cuban influences of what was known as "son" however just as "white" rock music evolved into hip-hop, son evolved into the puerto rican trend of salsa

  • What is Salsa? But, Son-Cubano badly play. I am a musician, a percussionist. Look at the instruments you guy use to play that which you call Salsa: timbales, claves, congas, chekeres, maracas, campanas, guiros, and on and on. All originated in Cuba look at any Music Dictionary and it will tell you. So, what salsa are you talking about. Probably, the one Puerto Ricans did not invent. Look that is not yours.

  • Ok, thanks for telling us your a percussionist because I am too, so that doesnt say much and you dont even have any videos up?...but anyways, I always give credit to cubans for originating it! Just as reggaeton originally started in Panama but how it is known today was created by Puerto Rico, we just take things and make them commercially acceptable and better. Now I love cuban music and rumba is my fav. but we talking about salsa here, and salsa is cubanly rooted but puerto rican altered

  • If Salsa is from Cuba then Charanga is from France. The comes a time when a pivot turns a genre into another genre so get over it. Everyone knows the HAITIANS including a dominican lady La Ma Teodora brought the DR son to Cuba which evolved in Cuba into the Cuban Son. Every island had their own Son. All the islanders of las 3 maravillas ate, spoke and played basically the same thing. Just listen to the Dominican Son.

  • charanga is from France? I never seen a french charanga, pero la salsa si usa todos los intrumentos que se usan en el son, y los mismo toques, etc, nada nuevo, todo copiado

  • I know you(puerto ricans) passionately want to be recognized as creators of Salsa, you don't want to get me started on this issue because I can easily prove it to you, with the music and cite recordings and you will know the answer. it's cuban with a different musical message, didn't create anything partner

  • Mr. Papito, you puerto ricans even copy the words, phrases, soneos que se habian usado antes por los cubanos. you are an immitating machine with some exceptions

  • You surely are a f..u.c..k.i.n.g gringo pretending to be latino....

  • Isn't the feminine of Gringo Gringa? What does that make you...oh yeah schmuck.

  • Damn - that was supposed to appear under the abusive comment earlier. This is a useful vid.
