Could you alter it in any way the center positive would disengage the battery from the circut? Or would this not be cost effective? Maybe something simple like having the plug inserted would push the connector for the battery wire out of the way might work. I don't know the logistics of it, ignore me if my ignorance makes my suggestion useless.
