This is the same raga Mehdi Hassan sang 'Jab tere nain muskuraate hain' in. He called it Raga Sehra. I think it bears structural similarities to Komal Rishab Vibhas but is actually Sehra, because the composition of this and the other ghazal are identical. Thoughts?
for god;s sake please this is tal roopak of 7 beats tin tin na dhin na dhin na and the rag in which this composition is made is komal rekhab vibhas .but but this is not a shud rag .lot of other sur have been used .he has done just super job .
Wah! Two greats... Pandit Hariharan and Ustaad zakir Hussain.
Everyone knows about Zakir Saab's genius. Hari Saab can change raag at will that I dont think any vocalist in the world apart from perhaps Shankar Mahadevan can do.
I agree that the tabla is distracting--this item is really Hariharan's and Zakir Hussain should have gracefully let him sing with just a gentle background support. Hari, by the way, is wonderful!
zakir sahaab is disturbing hariharanji , he should keep straight theka while the main singer is singinging , during the time of laggis play what ever you want.
I see that there is a discussion going on about Zakir's tabla in this record. I have been a classical musician for over 15 years and I play both the tabla and the harmonium. Tabla is primarily an accompanying instrument, so is the harmonium. When not playing as solo, these instruments need to be played in soft sync with the main performer. Ustads like Zakir, sometimes, tend to show off their Saadhana even while playing an accompanist's role. This may not feel good always, especially for Ghazals.
You cant necessarily perceive the tabla he plays in this ghazal as "showing off". Firstly, its a ghazal, In ghazal, tabla is expected to play laggi's at certain theme points in the ghazal. Secondly, if you gonna choose one of the best tabla players in the world to play tabla in your recording, he will play at his level and nothing less, otherwise, Hariharan would have chosen someone else. Thirdly, they both know each others skill level, therefore "more can be done".
I agree, you cannot get a bighead like Zakir Hussain to play with you and expect him to not be a bighead. At least we now know that ZH is terrible at accompanying ghazal singers. Everything about his playing is just too manic for this style of music. Laggis are one thing but there's too much happening in the theka as well. It didn't work for me...
I think ZH like most big shot tabla players are best left to only do solo performances, they don't have what it takes to provide sangat
Ustad Zakir Hussain is simply one the best accompaniment maestros ever, completely at east and in command with ANY form of music. The way I look at it , is that he has done this album with Hariharan as a special project on a equal, co-musician footing. So it should not be judged as a traditional ghazal program.
I am a big fan of both hariharan and Zakir. I agree Zakir is not the best accompanist for Gazal. But that doesn't mean he is bad accompanist. He is a great accompanist for many instrumentalists. also for Kathak dancing. He is an all rounder I would say. Don't judge by just listening to one recording. Musicians have their moments. I have listened to Zakir's accompaniment for Pt. Jasraj and V.G Jog. He plays according to the musician.
Down load real player... latest free version... It will allow you download this video on you're real player... then you can burn it on you're cd as wave file. It does everything automatically... Good luck.

Zakir is a terrible accompaniment percussionist!
He spoils the song with his over-playing! I agree he needs to show his talent, but being an accompaniment means he should support the singer, and not dominate the soundspace.
Do listen to the song Shahar dar Shahar. Both almost seem to be in their own tracks, as if Zakir recorded for the taal separately, and Hariharan sang separately, and both were put together!
This is a very good composition ofcourse Zakir Hussain is great on tabla, Hariharan is too good his voice is so smooth and all harkat and nazakat is always there in his ghazals.Love it
Nicely sung. Ustad Zakir is better in his solo performances. Other artistes are much more enjoyable in accompaniment. It sounds very mechanical, like an electronic tabla!
This gazal was recorded without Pt. Zakir Hussain accompanying. The two greats did their recordings seperately and recordings were mixed later. Hats off to both!!!

Pakhrat, I think you should refrain from commenting on artists like Zakir Hussien.. with all due respect, Hari Haran is not even in tune...one who knows music should know...
Do not worry about pakhrat ,sitarmusic123 his comments are irrelevant ,i think any ghazal singer in the world will, willing accept Zakir ji as their accompanist, whenever zakir saheb makes his mind to play with ghazals only. Well played ustad Zakir hussain.
I doubt you actually listen to this clip. You simply listen to the idea that the great Zakir hussain is playing. Zakir is a fantastic solo drummer but he is absolutely awful accompanying Hariharan. Problem is most of you already made up in your mind that Zakir is playing so it is going to be good. All rationality goes out the window. One guy posted a video called 'Zakir Hussain-chakradar gone bad' But so many people got upset and denied it furiously that the poster changed the title. Very sad.
Well said - while I enjoy listening to Zakir solo this was just off key. Ustad Tari is excellent at both solo as well as with others. Ustad Tafo Khan is good solo - as is Zakir Hussain. Time ans time again i was shaking my head wondering where the taal had gone off to in this clip.
He wasn't aiming at the stereotypical ghazal accompaniment like the ghulam ali ghazals you hear.THis was quite different, and he was in taal. Its impossible for him to lose taal.
Well done shailendramishra keep up with the good work ,yes indeed tell pakhrat1 that zakir ji is a universal player and he is equally comfortable playing with ghazals ,thumri ,dadras, khayal, instrumental, solo, kathak dance, and west fusion.Zakirji is the best and nobody will ever come close to him.

taal- rupak (7 beats). The bass falls on beats 4 and 6. (and resonates through 5 and 7). That should help you orient yourself.

If you go to James kippen website on tabla it explains perfectly what is wrong with many modern tabla players.
he has descriptions and audio clips of legendary tabla players of old who are two leagues above the guys today.
These tabla players even i had not heard before.
It was through him i discovered magicians like Ustad Amir Hussain, Ustad Bashir Hussain Goga, Ustad Afaq Hussain etc
