I do not support pacifiers, glow sticks, or any of that other bullshit and have never been a "raver kid" of any sort. However, and I agree with Msosaka, it is time to move on. I've been to DEMF every year since it opened, and every year it gets worse and worse with the candy kids....this year they were everywhere!
"THIS IS NOT A FUCKING RAVE" that is what my shirt will say this year at the '09 DEMF. So, look for me on one of those large ass lcd screens getting pacified and glow sticked to death...
I can't believe what I'm reading! are you serious about the candy kids? I haven't seen those in years!!! I went to WMC and BPM already and I was planning to go to DEMF this year because the DJ line-up is 100x better than any other festival or conference in my opinion. I was also under the impression that it would be more underground, which is great...and that people whould have a better knowledge of the music and artists performing! But candy ravers??? seriously WTF!!!
Maybe I am missing something here? Since when Mark Farina and House music turned into a rave?! I have been very fortunate to visit countless events around the world (from Sonar to Southport Weekender and yes, DEMF on several occasions) and get appalled when I see a person sucking on a pacifier and twirling around those idiotic glow sticks to house music!
I guess it is possible that she was just waiting for some trance/techno DJ that would take her back to her teen raving years when we was rolling on e to the sounds of Rabbit In The Moon under the Ambassador Bridge. Please do not mislead people. Stupid pacifiers, idiotic glow sticks, fucktarted masks filled with Vicks should not be associated with House music. It is hard enough to introduce new people to House and try to explain to them what House is without someone immediately thinking raves...
Right, and I'm not arguing that fact in the least. I'm not misleading anyone, what I am saying is that DEMF is basically a rave and rolling on e and glow sticks are what happens there and the majority of the people there were doing just that.
i agree with both of you on various points. but the fact of the matter is....THE RAVE SCENE IS DEAD. it will never be like it was. candy kids should have left their pacifiers and glow sticks at home way back in 2002 when everything went to shit.
i cant say im not guilty of owning pacifiers and the like(YEARS ago.)but one day you have to let go and grow up.
and though the DEMF is LIKE a rave....its not a rave at all. it is everything raves didnt stand for. it is in no way underground.
soo...my question is...when are we going to evolve into a higher state of mind and stop grasping at the last threads of something that died years ago?
and anyways...i think that DEMF is way more fun than raves ever were. at least i dont have to worry about being held up with machine guns over someone trying to steal nitrous tanks.
except for all of the assholes with glowsticks tied to strings..ha.
people come from all over the world to attend and it has really brings a sense of community to detroit. that alone makes it better than raves.
I can actually see that girl showing up with her pacifier to 2025 DEMF (if it ever goes that far that is, which it hopefully does, since it is probably one of the last events that can bring tourists or visiting people to Detroit these days...)
I hope I did not come across like a total asshat for it seems like we feel similarly about the scene. You are correct, DEMF is basically a rave and that in my opinion is just plain sad. Just about every variation of the electronic music is represented at this fest but the visitors keep making it into a rave. I do not think that Derrick May intended for DEMF to resemble rave in any way, shape or form but that is what it turned out to be. I guess, that is why I am more drawn to WMC and Sonar...
I LOVE MARK FARINA! I danced my ass off the entire set! Definitely a highlight from all of the Detroit Electronic Music Festivals so far!! And I've been at em all! (:)) <3<3<3<3
Mark Farina is what I miss most about DEMF.
MF is the SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

Let's be honest here, Detroit needs events like this to attract as least some kind of traffic...

Oooh- does anyone know who did the opening track? Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is sampled throughout.
Thanks! I was there too. He was great, as always.

My favorite house set of the festival. Such a great vibe to Farina's sets. The crowd went ape when he played Perculator!!!
