  • Oh no.......it's to much heroin in his eyes, she looks bad ;o(

  • sounds like a drunk man.... looks like one too

  • Love Nico! but this sounds like someone singing on the Karaoke in my local Pub!

  • if this was not Nico she'd be boooed off stage. She is just 'gone matey gone' on smack and can't sing this song at all.

  • Cosi' underground! Divinamente sublime.

  • People who say she sounds like a drunk man or whatever are simply DUMB CUNTS. Period.

  • Nico isn't overrated, she's underrated. Hardly anyone knows who she is.

  • This version is way more intense than Bowie's. NICO=ICON.

  • Yes, she's wasted, but she contributed more to music than Cheryl Cole EVER will.

  • She looks totally wasted. And totally fabulous.

  • just so wonderful!!i adore nico and her songs!!!!!

  • Is it me, or is Nico on something???

  • @SVinNJ Yes dear. Olbas oil and fruitgums.

  • @SVinNJ

  • she is great.

  • People which says she sounds like a drunken man or anything else should stick back to lady gaga shit.

Lots of feelings on these songs, you just dont hear them. And people got history, bands got history and it's part of the song. So if you dont know that you shouldnt criticize. You guys got no musical taste.

agree she looks a bit on a trip or on H, but again, it's part of the song.

  • sad, this is awful, shame what h does to people

  • she was the scene, the others just immitated, even siouxie... heroin goddess she sang and everything about her was the urban romantic depressive bordeline existence... she was a true women, fighter, a legend... never sold out

  • nico está re-dura

  • spellbinding

  • she sounds like a drunken man...

    scarry!

how can you celebrate this one? david`s version much more better!

  • Wonderful.

  • It's not just the voice it's how you use the voice! That's what Art is..too judge her like a nAmerican idol contestant is not only ludicrous but a very philistine point of view

  • She's just smashed

  • Her methed out face looks terrible, and she butchered the song too.

  • ugggh...she should stick to photos, b/c no-one can hear her....TERRIBLE VOICE. This isn't art..this is a fart from a neck.

  • Nico et les paradis artificiels.

  • fuckin' great; gothic avant la lettre!

  • THIS song with HER as singer..no increase possible

  • CHUTA QUE E MACUMBA !

  • Well, no - she wasn't in best shape then. But she was even doing heroin by the time she was recording her best records, Marble Index/Desertshore/The End. But maybe in the 80s she was just leached out on a higher level. But apart from that her interpretation of "Heroes" doesn't bear comparison with the original tune. Not at all. She was best in performing her own stuff. I mean no one ever dared to produce tracks such as "Ari's Song", "Memento Hodie", "Afraid", or "We've Got The Gold". She did.

  • damn she looks so fucked up here

  • She was the queen of Goth, started the whole thing. She was morbid, sang like Marlene Dietriche on heroine, her lyrics utterly depressing, and who can not go crazy listening to her playing the harmonium? Still, she knew what she was doing and stuck to it to the very end. Now, that's determination. Not many people have that kind of guts and drive.

  • @rcjteng She was "goth" more than a decade before such a term even existed. She was the ice queen!

  • Comment removed

  • @rcjteng jah jah. guts and drive. stick to it-iveness. so did charlie manson. hitler stuck it out to the bitter end. he knew what he was doing. so did elvis, sort of.

should i admire a sound that hurts my brain because she shares these other qualities with murderers, dictators and over the hill pop stars?

  • @markmarktarmann No, but you have to at least acknowledge the fact that Nico contributed an ambience to music in the 60's that didn't exist anywhere except in a few faraway places. It's not the sound of her voice that's really relevant to her music but the mood it sets.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx i have watched a few more clips since then, and i agree."it was a SCENE, man" i was just

not ready for the sound of her voice. it's definitely an acquired taste, and i'm not on smack or coke partying away the 70's in monaco with jet set euro trash so i don't know if i can get myself onto that wavelength.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx but .come on. the "sound of her voice" is pretty fucking relevant . it's music.

  • @markmarktarmann Yes, I should have said "the quality of her voice". The sound is important, but only in creating the mood of her music. Though I do disagree that the sound of a singer's voice is always relevant. Most people agree that Lou Reed's work in the Velvet Underground is brilliant due to his songwriting alone.

  • Comment removed

  • @markmarktarmann Yes, I agree whether we like voices or not matters greatly. What I meant to say was what we think of an artist's vocal skill is not always relevant to our like/dislike of their voice. I don't think Lou could sing but I prefer him to thousands of accomplished vocalists. Similarly, Nico often sounds droning and atonal but it suits the style of her songs, which I love.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx well, u enjoy it, and that s all that matters. i ve heard this so many times now i'm starting to like it. cheers

  • @markmarktarmann If you plan on checking out any of Nico's work I recommend starting with The Marble Index.

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx ok thanks i will

  • @xXPinkGoddessXx usually you either like the "sound" or you don't . i don't like hers.

so i should just leave. but since you brought up lou reed. yes i love "walk on the wild side" the voice fits. but i don't want to hear him try "my funny valentine". he has the artistic good sense to stay within his limits. i love roxy muxic, but i think ferry butchers standards. if i'd heard her first on some highly produced track for a horror movie i'd probably have said"that's wierd but it works".

  • @markmarktarmann unfortunately i heard her first singing my funny valentine. her surprisingly deep husky tone, very straight(bland) phrasing, and i admit, the accent too, repulsed rather than beckoned.one of those "what the f?## is this moments". sorry. i should go now before i set myself up for anti troll responses forever.

  • @rcjteng she had to stick it out . i don't think she wasn't ever quite ready to take a day job.

  • @markmarktarmann very very good one. i went "ouch" for nico.

  • When was this recorded?

  • Dreadful, an embarrsement to David.

  • A Triumph of The Will...

    Death never worried her

    VIVA Nico

  • david should be on his knees thanking heaven that a goddess like Nico decided to do one of his songs.

  • No he woudn't, David's not the kind to get star struck by other artists.

  • it's not about being star struck. it's about recognizing what an iconic genius Nico was. David has always expressed his admiration for Nico, and if you didn't know that, you suck.

  • How is Nico a genuis? please explain?

She met Andy Warhol who introduced her too Lou Reed. She then sang (badly and out of tune) on the velvet underground album.

Then got kicked out and made some solo albums, the first one included ZERO songs written by her.

then made others that contained 7 minute long wanky instrumentals that she didn't make.

    She could not sing.

    She could not write songs.

    She could barely act.

All she was, was an attractive disaster.

I like her but "genuis"? no no

  • She was already a famous personality BEFORE she met Andy Warhol.

She DIDN'T GET KICKED OUT, she quit before the band fell apart, get it right.

And yes she COULD SING, not in a conventional way, her voice is unique.

She never acted in conventional movies either, even La Dolce Vita was not mainstream so how can you judge her acting when she only did what they called "art films" back then?

It's not like Bowie and Morissey are great singers and acting wise they STINK.

  • And "famous personality" equates to "genuis" how? Paris Hilton is a "famous personality" but she isn't exactly an Einstein for creativity.

The Velvet Underground lasted another 4 years before they fell apart, so she didn't exactly "leave" before it.

And David Bowie not a good actor? I guess he just found that Emmy in a junkyard didn't he?

David Bowie and Morrissey do have great voices in my opinion and both Write GREAT songs.

Something little Nico never could do.

  • No, Nico never did a porno like Paris Hilton and she didn't come from a wealthy family. She was an interesting person, with interesting ideas, and the fact she was a model hooked her up with important personalities in the European Art scene before Warhol.

She left the Velvets because she wanted a solo career not because they kicked her out!

Julia Roberts won an Oscar... is she a good actress? NO. awards mean shit. Bowie is a shit actor even in mainstream cinema.

    Well that's YOUR opinion.

  • But you have to admit he is certainly NOT pavaroti.

    Neither is Morissey.

they both write songs, not that great, but they also sing TONS of covers like NICO. So don't give me that crap.

Besides I don't get you...If you hate Nico so much why you comment and watch her videos? I mean I think Bowie is WAY overrated but you don't see me commenting on his videos. I simply don't watch them. It's wasting time. You need a hobby or something, or go listen to a bowie cd...

  • I don't hate Nico can't you read? Why are YOU so angry for me simply saying she was not a "genuis".

  • OMG you are so full of GARBAGE man! Nico DID write most of her songs since the "Marble index" in 1968! How dare you say she didn't write her own stuff?! Are you on crack or what? She also played the guitar and she excelled at playing the harmonium. She was a gifted poet, a true original, and I love her voice. So get yourself educated before you pull "facts" out of your ass like that.

  • hahahaha like we say in my town "you got burned!" got caught in a lie did you? hmmm.

Nico indeed wrote many of her songs . The only record where did not participate lyric wise was "Chelsea Girls."

That said, she WAS a genius not just because she wrote beautiful songs, but also because she created a very unique sound, she was way ahead of her time. The only original thing about Bowie was his make up and ugly orange hair. Sad but true.

  • I don't understand what's your point either? Are you trying to make people not to like Nico? Because if it's so you are failing miserably.

Your beloved David Bowie has expressed his admiration for Nico several times. I am sure he has seen this video at one point. So if you are on a crusade to defend Bowie's song give it up. He'd certainly would not appreciate any of the comments you made in his name...

  • I LIKE NICO.

But she is not a genuis, I was simply educating this simpleton called "Annbeauj" on that fact.

  • I think the "simpleton" is you. Ignorant lying fools should not be allowed to "educate" anyone.

  • I just did.

  • I agree with you. She was the product of the geniuses she worked with. Nico had a great voice, but without Lou Reed (a genius), she would not have been who she became. And she certainly was not a poet, to whoever said that before (wtf???).

And the amount of Bowie-bashing on this page is sickening, quite frankly. The man is a legend.

  • Exactly Morrisseyisdead is right.

Annbeauj is a cunt and so is johnjohnb1

  • watch nico steal the scene effortlessly in Fellini's 'Dolce Vita'- 1959- she was given the part by chance- the director spotted her on set- was impressed- She was fated to be somebody- Lou & Co- maybe especially Cale- deeply affected the course of her career- and we can't underestimate the credibility she brought to VU- but in some form or anotehr she'd would've realised her main ambition- to be a singer/performer- even without VU

  • I really like this version. Seeing Nico singing to the disco beat is surreal.

  • perfect way to put it. It's not "Heroes", but a surreal disco version made so much more authentic cause it's her.

  • Drugs are bad.

  • This was the opening song from this gig; after this song she puts off het coat and start to sing much better.

Her voice wasn't ''warmed up'' yet.

  • Are you implying that there is something wrong with this cover?

  • Not at all!

I'm a Nico-fan responding on the fact some people saying it's bad.

  • Smacked out ok........I heard Lou Reed nearly flaked out on some of the VU gigs, but the band managed to save him.

  • Drugen sind schlecht.

  • traurig schön

  • Comment removed

  • She's gonna fall over. Reminds me of Brittney Spears' "comeback".

  • Hardly falling over.

You obviously know ZILCH about heroin.

One can bend and nod - and still be be quite vertical.

Drunks fall over - Junkies are like Weebles.

They wobble but they don't fall down.

    Uusally

  • She couls sing, perhaps not all the time.

In her day she was hot, she was a model.

  • so ahead of its time, trans music in the 60s

  • oh lord. drugs

  • of course she has!

  • Thank you I love this ....

  • I....I just did a Bag...

    And you....you call it Scag

    And nothing...compares like a shot....

That's why my eyes look like dots...

RIP Nico...we still love ya... :-)

  • colocadísima...

  • never seen that..but I like it...........did she got drugs??

  • One day people will interview Lou Reed and the first question they will ask is, "What was Nico really like?"

  • One day people will interview Lou Reed and the first question they will ask is, "What was Nico really ON?"

    hahaha

  • everyone knows the answer to that anyway...

  • is this from nico icon?

  • I find this such a sad picture of her. And her voice sounds creepy to me...but she was great!

  • the lady around us all!!

  • the way she looks and acts here reminds me on Christiane F.

  • ...her medusa eyes are full of terror about this life...she was the heroine...

  • Was beautiful. Then Warhol got hold of her. Check out Marriane Faithfuls "Song for Nico", you'll see what I mean.

  • I have that particular song on my favourites & yeah ppl should check it out.excellent song.

  • shut up dildofredi

  • This is Nico doing a Bowie cover?!!? I'm pooping my pants! :9

  • Nico..Poignancy!

  • She was a heroin addict till the day she died while riding a bike in extreme heat. Such a waste. There's a great biography I read about her titled"Songs They Never Play On The Radio". Explains so much about her.Heartbreaking.

  • battlenoise, have you read the other great bio:"nico;life & lies of an icon"by richard witts? a fucking mindblowing read.

  • No haven't read that one. Will have to track it down. Thanks for the heads up and have a great new year!!

  • She looks so weathered and unhealthy...

  • you really are in an ivory tower . . .

perhaps you need to keep silly comments like that to yourself?

by the way it should be 70s not 70's - I'm surprised you didn't know that . . . in your ivory tower 'n' all

  • Yeah, your so fuckin' tough, you had to make up a anonymous profile, just to make that comment. Go fuck yourself.

  • and this is what heroin does to the one who takes it.

  • Yeah, it makes one hell of a singer outta one! I should try it too!! (Since the window-glasses tend to break when I start singing)

  • Well its not fuckin rocket science is it.

  • "She looks like a club in in Berlin 1979 no more no less"

    Literally ja ?

  • Heroin really sucks!

  • You don't know what you're talking about...

  • She looks like a club in in Berlin 1979 no more no less

  • She looks doped up.

  • She is.

  • she looks heroined up and she is

  • She liked looking fucked up, I think. She didn't want to be beautiful.

  • im not an expert, but if you are heroined up, can you sing a whole show on your feet and remember every line of the songs? she may be on something, but she´s also acting scary

  • Nico was in her fourties here and the light is bad; the interview taken on the same gig she looks so much better! [that interview is on youtube as well; i've got this gig on vhs ''nico an underground experience'']

  • she looks like mick mars

  • ja,ja,ja...ok..genial!

  • thx for posting this!!!

  • 20 years of heroin will make ya look crazy..lucky she lived as long as she did

  • Not sure she used smack for so long.

    Friendomine shared a huge bunchapot

with her as late as 1986.

  • Really?

    Please say more.

  • He just walked by the security etc after her gig in Copenhagen that fall... Sonn she put forth a gigantic bag of pot & they sat all night & smoked & she told him about her relationship with Jimbo etc............

I think the fact my pal is German made her open herself.

  • A nice tale.

I have a friend who saw Nico at Newcastle, sometime in the 1980s.

Have you read James Young's classic book on Nico?

  • No,'avent.Any good?

    I will travel with the mantioned friend this autumn;

we went to Interrail in'84 & went to see

Stones in Czechia last summer... After the event with Nico he went right home & phoned me & we chatted for the whole night over the phone, thats why I recall it so well.GOnna pump'im some more! I saw her myself in concert during probably the tour after the 1986 one - Stockholm 1987..as I want to remember.. ? (gettin demented...)

  • It is da best book on music ever written.

Da UK title is NICO: SONGS THEY NEVER PLAY ON THE RADIO; dad US title is NICO: THE END. There is a late 1990s UK reprint.

A great read. Really, it is a road book.

James Young was her keyboard player for 600 or so, concerts.

    Good day, my friend.

  • Sorry! Not too knowing about her musicians, awfully sorry.Even possible that chap was attending dat huge ganja party too?;) .. Will order that book to my local library. Thanks, mate!

  • I have read it twelve times, my friend.

Mr. Young was in Nico and the Faktion, about 1981-86. She had a different band for a brief period about 1987.

  • ..When I believe I saw her; so perhaps I havent seen Young after all. But the gig was just great. Loved her, she is so.. Gorgeous.Did ya know we have a copy of her in my town (yet a little calmer on drug front our lady)?Even a keyboardplayer/vocalist.. Check a post punk/new wave group called Vacuum.(can tell ya more in mess here)

  • Interesting, my mate.

You probably saw Nico and the Bedlamites - check out da 30-minute gig here, at YouTube.

  • rest in peace

  • she is was beautifl , but that only lasts a while, she was much deeper than that.

  • her look scares the shit out of me

  • Nico sings Heroes!!!

WOW!! Love her, David Bowie and Brian Eno!

    5 stars!

  • i wonder what year this was, looked like 80s possibly early-mid? you can see how shes aged, and yet she's grown more 'balls' so to speak. There should be a documentary put up on youtube about her.

  • Sakalak, Don't be so uptight! Nico was a known Drug user in her time and it is obvious that she is on something in this performance...just look at her eyes!...But, SO WHAT!...Nico was Fucking AMAZING!. Don't deny the truth and what is clearly visible, man!

  • very screwy looking dame i wonder what dave said when he seen this for the first time

  • She realy is spacing out here man, she's realy on lsd.....

  • ooops Nico is on Heroin./inside-and maaybe something else so she realy can sing Heroes:-) uaaaa ....

  • Does anyone know when and where this was recorded?

  • she is a monster

  • i hate that this was even caught on film

  • fucking heroin

  • hahaaha It´s so bad, so bad that IT becomes good.

  • Eine geniale Version...leider schaut Ihr der Tod schon von der Schulter, daher sehr bedrückend.

  • terrible sorry

  • bien dicho vanadio58 !!!

  • Man... that H messed her looks up big time.

For a second I thought I was watching Lou Reed.

  • 00:03 black smoke is leaving a trace on her beautiful profound sad face :) i love her and this song!

Adorable criatura!

  • Just as the dying leaf falls to the ground, heralding the arrival of winter, so shall my faint ears nod to the speaker heralding the arrival of Nico's cold voice.

    Hope you liked my poem.

  • She destroyed her beauty, health and talent. Her style is now (as it was before) demoralising for young people. Her music is depressive.

She was taking drugs being pregnant, she has learnt her son to take drugs... It is why people name her great or a famme fatal?

I dont even want to understand why she googles her eyes in this video.

People should exchange idols like her, before it's too late. Don't let drugs and such "idols" destroy your life! Don't name people "great" if they don't deserve it!

  • Some people are maybe not born to grow their talent, to grow healthy children and such crap. She was born for drugs, thats just another way.

  • Did you seriously just make the claim that some people are born to abuse drugs? I don't even really know how to respond to that, aside from making the much more apt claim that you're a fucking moron.

  • what a wonderful version

  • You can almost smell the patchouli and vomit. Heroin is so chic

  • so sleezy

  • this is a divine cover of heroes

    and she is divine,great nico!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    but heroes is heroes!!!!

    david bowie i love you

  • skagged up to the gills who can blame her

  • You are correct.

  • She was until heroin kicked in
