Being an artist for the game industry isn't impossible, you just have to put in more effort then the other guy. It's competitive. Best advice I can give is keep practicing. Even if you're away doing something else, make your assets, get work done, zbrush, max, maya, photoshop, NDO, whatever, use them, and rock it because if you don't the other guy is going to take your job, and you'll be left teaching....be productive. Oh and have a website.
I attend the Art Institute of Vancouver and if you think the gaming industry is underdeveloped in Canada you have not done your research. Additionally as long as you work hard it is a realistic goal to accomplish. The hiring rate is extremely high even 6 months out of graduating. Your "realism" is just you being lazy and not pushing yourself. Sorry you are so happy to compromise with your happiness but I'm living my dream.
canada has one of the most active game developer communities in the world today. how can you go an entire video talking about video games in canada and forget to mention montreal? the industry is only getting bigger here and ontario and vancouvers government have been so good to the industry pouring money in because its good revenue for the economy. if you have dreams kids, go take a life drawing class or an MIT in programming, or do both like me :)
You constantly say how the only games that will make it big are made from Japan. I can name multiple that aren't. They also don't need to be Japanese inspired to make it big. Halo, CoD, Anything Blizzard, to name a few

Awesome video. Just a few comments to some people that have posted comments seem to have the slightly wrong idea. There is a whole lot more to developing games than art and design, you don't necessarily have to be a talented artist, it depends on what area you want to go into for example a lot of fully qualified programmers have little artistic ability but they are able to develop professional and efficient code for things such as AI and game physics. Art designers focus on art rather than code.
i luv ur personally sweetheart its fucking dope lmfao... u got da same personality lyk mine... sheesh where can we find more women lyk u n dis world??? cuz ur so real about ur shyt :)
funny, because all this time i thought Canadian education is better than US, and yes, while there are lots of Game Industry in US, but there are lots of them too in Canada, to say, there are EA, Bioware, Ubisoft, and a couple more smaller ones
i feel like my dreams of being in the video game industry is slowly passing away and going down the drain. A part of me was thinking should i go to (Full Sail) a video game design school to learn how to make my own video games and maybe create my own empire company like Capcom and Square enix" nah that will never happen. Am definitely not going to work at Gamestop since it's MANDATORY to use the register which i don't wanna use.
if a job cant be found out of school, we shouldnt cast worry and anger about that or anything in this life.Mathew 6:33 says "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." SO Christ says store your treasure in heaven as thats the promised place we go when we recieve Christ as lord and savior living our lives for GODs will.as a career may or may not come, death surely will any time and after that follows the judgment of GOD to heaven or hell
I`ve been in Japan for about 5 yers now, and I could say it`s not the easiest industry to get into here either. But yeah, if you dedicate yourself and put int he work. It`s doable.
I didn`t like 3DCG and stopped taking those classes and that`s really hurting me now. If I had stuck with it I bet I would`ve had a good chance though.
This is ironic Canada are now the 3rd biggest player in the industry. It's interesting to see older videos shows how constantly changing this industry is :)
i wanna work my dick in you and cum in you then leave you a cummy mess and high five my bros afterward then play some rad games. hit me up for the deets!
I worked in the film/advertising industry. Its damn tough! If you want to work in the gaming industry, go for it. But don't think that film/advertising is an easy alternative
Everyone!, if you want to be in a gaming company, you must be willing to waste ALL of your life into it! (no fun only using your creation for the rest of your life)
If you can do it, then you can do it
(btw, what's the requirement to work in an art industry?)
dont become a gamer it a bitch to get a job it is really hard u got to fight to have one if u really want to play video game for money ...............do this stay home than make ur home video game so u make money off it if ur game good ur going make atleast 1 million
Seriously though, to be more exact...everyone and their brother (in high school) wants to get into video game industry. But most of them lack the artistic talent (it involves a lot more than just pushing buttons), and soon find out they lack passion/motivation after they realize it's really, really hard work...learning multiple programs at a time, as well as new techniques that are constantly evolving as the industry does.
And the serious, talented one's that are left over find work.
Would any of those topics involve you taking off your top while you're talking to us...as I think that would help us take you more seriously...I'm serious.
You are going to have to move on forward and take a chance because it is not good to stick with the past and japan is problably not better than the USA's gaming industries.Nice video though :).
Canada's gaming industry is far from underdeveloped. Bioware and Ubisoft are givens, but what about Artech? Digital Extremes? Digital Illusions? Radical? Strategy First?! EA Vancouver & Rockstar Vancouver?!? Those are a few of the over 300 unique names of gaming companies in our Country. Justice, British Columbia alone is home to over 150 different companies, both domestically & foreign owned. I actually HAVE looked into this career path. There's plenty of work INSIDE our country.
anyway, i learned something valuable in this video. Getting into the gaming industry was my childhood dream but this dream kinda died out after realizing that programming a game is not as fun as playing it, and because of the fact that there's really no game industry in canada.
Breaking into the gaming industry might be hard for me, but I still have to try and pursue my dream.
Good luck in japan kim. oh ye watch out for train perverts or w.e they r called.
In short, to say that you NEED to move to the US or Japan in order to get a job in video games is just wrong. Unless it's your goal to occupy an administrative position or something along those lines which would demand your physical presence in one of the actual offices. I probably should have just mailed this too you but I got a little carried away. Try to look at the video game industry outside of the Square-Enix and Nintendo box. There's a lot more to it than just two gaming companies.
For what the people in my daily life have expressed the desire to go into in the Gaming Industry, it has almost always required them to relocate to the West Coast of Canada, or simply out of this country. It is undeniable that the Canadian gaming industry is extremely lacking, and if what you're looking to do requires being in the "office", then expect to have to leave your small town, Alberta.
It may be misinformed but it's my personal experience.
If you stipulate office positions only, then I'd have to agree. But I have friend working in PR for Eidos at the moment, based out of CA, but she spends 90% of her work year in Canada working from home. I would imagine graphics design allows for the same type of flexibility. It should be noted that there are thousands of third-party developers out there, some of which specialize in simplistic game manufacturing using Flash or producing cellphone games. It may not be Square or Nintendo but...
they could represent potential opportunities to break into the game industry and gain a little exposure/experience. Viewers should wiki 'video game companies' for a comprehensive list of game manufactueres around the world. One or more may be closer than you think!
Well, truly I must admit I never considered the option of working at home, which I know full well is becoming ever popular in Advertising and mostly anything to do with Graphic Design.
I'm going to make it my mission to get an interview with a Bioware Edmonton employee and see first hand what it's like to work in the industry, and to break into the industry.
I'm a fan but this video is horribly misinformed. I can appreciate your sentiments regarding Japan and I won't disagree that the Asian community is largely responsible for the conception and success of the video game industry but to suggest that it is still the veritable hub of video game development is incorrect. If anything, game manufacturers and design studios have been gradually making the move stateside since the late 90's or at least established sister headquarters outside of Japanasia.
Furthermore, the industry is so streamlined now that a great deal of the work that goes into producing some of these titles has little to do with employee location. The days of 100% in-house development are long gone and code and design aspects of a project are often outsourced to people across the globe. The only thing you need to concentrate on in order to break into the industry is a) decide what you want to do within the industry and b) educate yourself and network accordingly.
Even the original power house Japan developers are begining to realize that geography is an almost non-existant factor in game production nowadays. In a recent press conference regarding the iminent MGS4 release, Hideo Kojima states:
"I believe that video games are a form of synthesized art that evolves by adapting new technologies," continued Kojima. "It's a business, so there are difficult decisions, but when you think about the future of video games,...(cont'd)
...I think that you need to take some risks to move on forward. Once you halt, it's really hard to go [back on track] and take steps forward. Unfortunately, overseas game production companies, which are well-funded and extremely skilled, have surpassed us by a couple of steps. It was once said that Japan molded the world's video game [industry], but that's becoming a thing of the past. Sad as it may be, it's the truth."

Create your own company!
I wish people will stop looking toward industry final fantasy wasn't that good of a game in the
first place it had a compelling story. Put it up against real titles that stress what games are
all about "Story/creativity" Devil may cry, God of War, etc...
Creativity is what the industry wants but they over professionalize in
their efforts anyway... 3:31 into your video and you don't seem to know a lot about the game industry.
