The word translated as "Beat" is "Idrubuhenna"
The word "Idrubu" means "You shall Drop"
The word "Henna" means them.
The passage doesn't say beat them, it says "Drop them" or divorce them. Further more, the Prophet Muhammad, never beat ANYONE and condemned abuse.
But here I have to deal with, on a regular day to day basis, mistranslations (wide spread ones) slandering the name of Islam. Of course everyone forgets the Bible Punishes rape with forced Marriage (to the rapist) and listens to this.

clearly states a man can scourge his wife.
If you are serious about the Qur'an, then also check to be sure that verses 4:24, 23:6, 33:50 and 70:30 all stay faithful to the Arabic by using the word 'captive,' 'slave,' or 'those whom thy right hand possesses' in reference to the women authorized by Allah for a man's sexual use.

@battim No, that's what I corrected for you, in the comment box. I don't read the translation of the Quran in English, I read and define in Arabic.
As for captives, servants and women servants who do not convert to Islam, you should try reading context and note the rights given to these people in the circumstances they're in. Note, that the only way to become a captive/servant was to serve an Army that attempted to fight Muslims.
This is far more mild than anything in Bible. Read Leviticus.

I am getting really tired of Islam (and other religions) falling to the ground and having a temper tantrum because a non-Muslim drew or mentioned Muhammed in a parodolical manner. They probably parodied Jesus numerous times. Yet we don't act like a bunch of crybabies screaming and kicking on the floor.
Too me, it seems like that religious people have the mentality of a 3 year old. Not all of them, mind you, but most.

It is not in it's original form. The qur'an is. The bible has the jews killing people when they entered a land. The qur'an says make peace and Allah hates the one who strikes first.

I do not follow any doctrine of MAN. In fact, I do not even attend a church, as the Lord says quite clearly in the bible that He DOES NOT dwell in buildings built by men. Since the literal temple was destroyed at Jesus's death, the Lord says that our bodies are the temple He lives in.
