That is, hands down, the single most-amazing, trippiest animated chase scene I've EVER seen!
Shame this film was ruined by studio execs, glad to hear a re-done version fixes a lot of the woes...you can tell, from this scene right here, that amazing animation coupled with dizzying depth and spectacularly-symphonic sound and silence (with the exception of Vincent Price, HIS voice is awesome here!) really sells this scene, and flick.
Also--thumbs up if the Nostalgia Critic sent you here!
Personally, if it wasn't for this scene and how well the thief and cobbler's characters are conveyed without any dialogue when I saw this movie, I wouldn't have given it a second glance. Now it's one of my guilty pleasures (just don't tell my older brother)! :D
Holy crap, I came upon this by accident on Google and freaked when I saw the thumbnail. I remember this was my all time favorite movie when I was little, probably rented it for three months from Hollywood Video. I am so glad I found it again!
I can still hardly believe the steps scene was done traditionally. Nowadays it would be relatively easy to do the steps in CG and just animate Tack falling down them. But when you consider it was hand drawn and that every frame that it rotates or the perspective changes in the slightest would need to be a bunch of new drawings it's just insane.
That is THE trippiest, most impressively-expressive and creative animtion this side of "Yellow Submarine."
Actually, the whole FILM feels like it's sort of on that YS style--minus the Beatles and in Arabia, but that ios TRIPPY animation, and the fact it's hand-draw only adds to how remarkable it is.
Still...Mirimax screwed this film over well--the mostly-silent-except-Price version is better, but this is The Masterpiece That, tragically, Never Was.
i don't want to be rude, but i just found this. (I once watched this when i was little kid and i wanted to become tack's friend so bad! Anyays this movie left an impression in the back in my head. I've even had dreams about this movie, but i never had a clue what movie it was. Until today when i realized the internet is one handy large thing.)
I remember tack being silent. As in, never talking. Is this true? Does Tack never talk in this original version? I WILL definetely watch this movie!!!
@qaau74E Yes, I know about that version. This clip was taken from that version. The guy who made it sent me a complimentary DVD with it on it, most likely because I donated $200 to him for the project.
@Sdawkminn I know no one really likes that particular one, but do you remember the version where you could hear the thief's thoughts as he went through the movie? I really want to find that version. Cant find it anywhere
@dragoscilvio That one is the one Miramax made for the United States and is actually the most common one. It's called "The Thief and the Cobbler". I don't know exactly where to find it. It was at my local video rental place.
@georgespooo It was released in theaters as "Arabian Knight", but they retitled it when they released it on video back to "The Thief and the Cobbler", which is what qaau74E was asking about. He/she can't very well get the theater reel.
@georgespooo Sdawkminn is right. This movie was known to have many titles, of which "The Thief and the Cobbler" was one and which I have 2 copies of on DVD. I got them free in boxes of Kellogg's Froot Loops cereal here in Canada.
@Grahamx227 Pretty much it was being made by Richard Williams and Warner Bros. pulled out because they didn't like the rough cut and Aladdin was coming out as competition. The Completion Bond Company finished it without Williams and came out with The Princess and the Cobbler, which was then edited even more by Miramax and released in the United States as The Thief and the Cobbler on home video. This clip is from a fan-made version from the original. Look it up on Wikipedia.
@Grahamx227 this is the good version, if your looking for it make sure its the re-cobbled cut because Williams was kicked of the protect half way through
In fact this movie whas suposed to be Richard william greatest masterpiece, but he never did finish it, Miramax took the project from him and they made the movie more based on Aladin Story telling, in fact aladin genie character its completely based on zigzag character.
@MrJoyhoyful It doesn't exist on DVD; it was a 'free', fanmade project. There's a copy on Google video, and here on YouTube, as well as other sites, which you are more than welcome to burn to DVD if you wish.
@MrJoyhoyful What you COULD do is find and download the full version somewhere online and then load it onto a DVD disc. The Recobbled Cut was never released for sale.
It's more along the lines of the fact that they added the voice in the remakes and while I do like the thief's inner monologues you can enjoy scenes with a lot going on art wise (such as this one) easier without the added voice overs.
Install a bit torrent and search for thief and the cobbler in Google. A link should appear where you can download the file that is still in torrent form. Take the torrent download and upload it unto your bit torrent. After awhile(And I do mean awhile). you will get the Richard Williams recobbled cut and after that you can keep it in your PC store it in your flash drive or put it on a blank DVD CD and enjoy it wherever DVD players are present.
Aladdin features a sultan in white-ish clothing [with a white beard], a gold object of power, a evil vizier with a pet bird who wants to marry the princess to take the throne, and a hero who is very pale for his homeland.
Surely there's no resemblance there!
YumYum was way cooler than Jasmine, anyways. Did you ever see Jasmine kick the shit out of Iago? Did Jasmine every yank the lamp out of Jafar's hands and beat the hell out of him?
Tack could kick the shit out of Aladdin too! It takes Aladdin's stupid-ass pride and magical powers to destroy his own city. Tack destroys the other army and manages to do it with a tack, some gold thread and a fucking sewing needle! That's why there's one line in the Miramax version I like. Tack says "Who needs a genie when a tack will do the trick?" He pretty much raised his middle finger in Aladdin's face! XD
@AngelTakio HAHAHA!!! That is Freakin Hilarious!!!!!! I wonder if they'd make a video about Tack fighting with Alladin or watching them on a cartoon version of something like the Jeopardy--sorry, I meant Jerry Show!
I don't totally agree. the songs in aladdin are way better than the Miramax edit of this film. I also like Jafar WAY better than Zigzag. on everything else, I totally agree.
BTW, what's you opinion on a website on everything Thief and the Cobbler? I think I might create such a website.
well I agree with you on the songs better in "Aladdin" compared in the Miramax version of "The Thief And The Cobbler." because in my opinion, the Miramax version of the film sucks.
As for the website idea, it really depends on what version of the film you're talking about. Is it only the Miramax version, or is it every version out there?
No, no, NO. This movie was done entirely by HAND-DRAWN animation, over the span of over 1.5 decades.
Give this work the credit it deserves; its creator had a dream to use conventional animation, and although his dream was destroyed by Miramax and others, the Thief and the Cobbler is a masterpiece in itself.
@loverofparodies It's a masterpiece of animation, no denying that. The film (as it exists in the recobbled cut) is a bit of a mess. I think that it's primarily due to the fact that Richard Williams isn't much of a storyteller, but he's a world class animator. The film seems to be all about the gee-whiz factor on the smooth, intricate animation, but ignores making the story, or the characters, interesting. That said, it's still a beautiful film, even if it feels like an extended demo reel.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@loverofparodies the miramax version added Tack's thoughts and the Thief's thoughts (which were absolutely hilarious), made the movie's animation more consistent and fluid, made a better sounding score, and still maintained the artistic goal of the movie.
@ilovecloudythegiant Are you joking? Miramax definitely did NOT make "the movie's animation more consistent and fluid, [...] and still maintained the artistic goal of the movie". In fact, the additional animation not by Williams looks terrible compared to the original scenes. And they didn't maintain the artistic goal, they turned it into an extremely childish farce.
Winter's funniness and the music are pure opinion, so I won't debate those.
My most favourite scene in the whole movie... Love it! Thank yew! ^_^ It's so clever.. I love it when they go round and round the stairs... Makes the eyes go funny 0.o
Tack was originally going to become more handsome and realistic at the end of the movie. At the beginning he pretty much looks like a clown and has bad posture. William's team never got to animate "hero Tack" except for the last scene, but you can see in the storyboards in the Recobbled Cut that when ZigZag has ripped half of his clothes off, he is actually quite tall and muscular. Calvert didn't understand this and animated Tack to be as cute as in the beginning.
ah thank you for telling me I still like how he looks in the beginning better but if William's team got to animate it the way they wanted I'm sure it wouldn't of looked so out of place and it probably wouldn't of bugged me
I have the princess and the cobbler. Note that Tac turns from like as if he's an albino to a brownie. What the hel. That ain't the music in the princess and the cobbler.
lolz we all have moments. The thing that bugs me is at the end where they get married and Tack is suddenly so thin in the face. Where'd the pudgy cheeks go! XD
This film was in-the-making for 28 years, never properly finished. There are different butchered versions around, "Princess..." is one of them. Closest to the original concept is the unofficial "Recobbled" version, available on p2p.
This one is taken from the original reel of film before it was redone by the person hired to "complete" it and instead deleted a lot of scenes and added in voices where they didn't belong, as well as adding in singing parts.
Haha! I love this movie! My cousin's showed it to me a long time ago, and I've always liked it since. The thief is funny on the balancing rope, tho. Thanks for putting this up!
That is REALLY bad for the eyes. Whoever thought up that scene clearly does not think like the rest of us. But that's a good thing- we need such talent.
could you add the love song yum yum and tack sing and the beginning where yum yum sings that one song which i forget the name of? i love those parts. great video by the way
That would actually be impossible. The reason is that this scene was taken from the version of the film how it was originally intended. It doesn't have any of those singing parts in it because those were added in later by someone else.
I have The Princess And The Cobbler as well. I bought it because it is the less modified version of the 2. The scene I posted here is from the original version, before it was changed by the person hired to "complete" it.
Thumbs up if you got a headache during this scene.

Thanks for putting this up!

this scene hurts my eyes!!! but its still cool :D

I don't have the version with the songs in it.

I do. It is so much better! This music isn't in it! Thank heavens! The Princess and the Cobbler is the one I have and it's the best

I have The Princess And The Cobbler as well. I bought it because it is the less modified version of the 2. The scene I posted here is from the original version, before it was changed by the person hired to "complete" it.
