itsaboutglenn- I've got 30 people who stopped using their inhalers because of these. The EPA, CARB, Consumer reports? All use the original FALSE study in Ca where they put THICK exhaust into a room with asthmatic children, then pumped in HUGE amounts of commercial ozone. @Marseglia12345 : Keep the machine on low as you can. There's a really small unit that just has the ozone tech and ionization. I use it on low too, in my bed/bath/open closet. The early machines did produce more,. but still no medical lawsuits. If you keep these on low, you'll be richly rewarded. The MORE they can put out, the MORE things you can do with them. I sanitize my cars, bathrooms, and bedrooms in under an hour. My garage in 2-6. My Air ducts in 20-45 minutes.

There's many types of air purifiers. Ozone generators produce high ozone levels and are NOT designed for daily residential use. Residential air purification systems produce very low ozone concentrations-totally safe. The ozone concentrations are well below the level considered harmless by ALL government agencies. Many purifiers now contain NO OZONE. The issue is not ozone but concentration. It's like cars, they emit carbon monoxide which is deadly, but a car used properly is safe to operate.

I have first hand experience with ozone poisoning. I did a job in Seattle where I was exposed to an ozone generator for odor control. I was around the machine for about 7 hours and I felt like I wanted to die. My chest and throat were raw, my joints ached, and I felt like I was 100 years old. Every odor I encountered for weeks after reminded me of rotting garbage. I was miserable. Finally, after 1 year I feel like my old self again. Now, whenever I see the word "ozone" I am very cautious. Peace.

@fishingthewatershed : Yes. TOO much ozone can indeed cause headaches! It's one of the FIRST indicators the machine has killed off ALL other VOC's and odors in the air.  The OWNER should have TOLD you to TURN IT DOWN if you smelled a slight bleachy odor or got headaches. These machines are SUPPOSED to be kept on as LOW as possible. If you NEED more, then turn it up ONE notch. Once the "problem" is alleviated, turn it back down! Some of the "knockoff" mach's WERE "fixed" at too high rates!

@fishingthewatershed An ozone generator emitts higher than normal amounts of ozone and is NOT to be used in occupied spaces. The purpose of an ozone generator is for the removal if smoke related to a fire or some heavy odor abatement need.

An air purifier for residential use however that is put out by Vollara ( formerly EcoQuest ) as safe for occupied usage. So, whats the problem?

Learn the difference and learn HOW to use a product and there should be no problem.

Ozone is created by the action of sunlight on CO2. Ozone (O3) is not remotely the same as breathable oxygen (O2), it is highly toxic. What a moron. Carbon dioxide is relatively harmless, so accoring do Glenn's logic carbon monoxide should also be relatively harmless, afer all it is only 'de-activated' CO2, right? And the SARS epidemic?
