The funny thing about this performance being before the actual release: it changed. notice the clapping, it goes *-1-2-3-4-*-1..2..3.. in the real version, in this it just goes *-1-2-3-4-1..2..3.. there's no beat between fast and slow claps. just interesting :P
My knock on Muse is that they wouldn't exist if not for Radiohead. Their genesis was an attempted mimmickry of Radiohead. But in fairness to Muse, while someone could say Muse's sound is Radiohead + Tool + Queen....somebody could also make an argument that Radiohead's sound is Can + Pink Floyd + Sonic Youth with a dash of Pixies time-signatures.
I guess my point is, as original as Radiohead are (and they ARE), their constituent ingrediants are slightly derivative.
Competition? Muse is good and entertaining, but Radiohead's in a completely different league. Radiohead's already Legendary, but I think Muse will be forgotten in a few decades.
Quite worthless. Except for the traces of an idea now and then. But all together, just a lame "radio-friendly" boring electrorock. A huge huge dissapointment.
Hold on...I have a problem w what u just said, I'm in the US and I "get it" like you said. But, surely you know that Radiohead is Brittish?! So...what kind of sense does your statement mean? Some of the best music EVER was from across the pond...and believe me, they get it over there. Please explain.
It's funny to notice the small differences between the song in this performance and in the album... the clapping pattern was different, the note in 1:43 didn't move up a tone as in the album, not to mention the different lyrics. Funny that Ed's effect didn't work at first... Check out Colin and Thom's worried faces at 2:19.
Please vote thumbs up, if you find all these music-theory duechebags hilarious, when menawhile, just FUCKING LISTENING AND REPLICATING the beats, with your FUCKING EARS, would have resolved how one plays the correct percussion, about TEN TIMES AS FAST, about arguing what enumeration (5/4, 15/16. 256/hamburger), represents the groove.
No wonder the best composers are natural ear-players...they aren't reliant on nametags to sense music's groove.
@slitheringinterstate This is stupid. All of the guys (except Thom) know theory and use it. Jonny was trained classically on violin. The large majority of composers know theory, it's the guys who "jam" that usually don't know theory. Though I have my problems with theory, it definitely has helped my writing skills. I'm sorry you are angry that you don't know theory, but learn what the hell you are talking about. Oh, and it's 5/4.
@slitheringinterstate how much music theory do you even know? You're being completely ignorant. Yes the best composers had amazing ears but they also had incredible knowledge of music theory. I myself know only elementary theory but it's helped so much. There's one thing about being limited with theory and using it to be better.
ps- just because you're one of those guys who attempts to get over their napoleon complex on the internet doesn't mean that you're going to. I could rip you a new one, however, I don't get off by trying to be a tough guy in front of a computer screen like yourself.
You couldn't rip me a new one if it was to save your mother from being raped by a rabid mandingo.
There's nothing you can do about your Low IQ.
You were born within the limits of your lowly genetics, and forever will be trapped within a mental swamp of things everyone else here thought through and out of, by age 12.
I know it's frustrating losing so badly to me in this banter but you're not genetically capable of doing anything about it, so don't be angry, just cry it out.
there is absolutely no such thing as a 15th note. trust me, i'm a music major. it's not possible to play a 15th note--there are whole, half, quarter, eighth, 16th, 32nd, and so on.
Theyr not playing 15th notes, that would be very stupid and queer. The songs called 15 step because it resolves after 3 bars of 5/4, meaning there are 15 beats before it resolves
regardless, it's a great performance. it's a live show, things happen..machines break and people make mistakes. if anything, little fuck-ups like that make it even more interesting.
actually the mess up didn't happen because of the bassist. what happened was, there was a mishap with the sampler (the one that makes that cool droning guitar sound), because Ed (the guy on the left, not the bassist) didn't come in on the cue. there's another video of this song from the same gig, and you can clearly see techs running up to him to fix the darn thing.
Radiohead is just fantastic. When the bassist messed up you could barley tell and thom handled it beautifully by pointing to him when he should come back in.
