  • damn that rear shock is mounted pretty close to the rear tire, no rub?

  • by stub, he means stub axle. if you look at the axles under the vehicle, you'll see the bulge in the middle. that's the differential, where the sideways rotation of the driveshaft from the engine is converted to forward to power the wheels. There's a mess of gears in the differential to do this, so you can't have shaft that goes all the way across. instead, a shaft comes from the differential to the left wheel, and another to the right. Since it's not all the way across, they call it a stub axle

  • i alwise thought the stub axle was from the steer knuckle to the wheel......

  • @tigerlxxv haha something like that....

The stub is the outer portion of the axle shaft from the knuckle out... with one long straight axle, no joint or stub, the front end would not be able to turn...

  • @tigerlxxv Your lost bud!!!! And the 4 that gave you a thumbs up... On your front Axles there is a universal joint so you can turn and the stub is the shaft coming off the U-joint to the hub....

  • @WranglerYJ91 Alrighty. If that's the case, then what do you call the part I described, the shaft that runs from the diff to the hub on a non-steering axle? Looks like I have some learning to do...

  • @tigerlxxv Well the way we put it here is if its a rear end without rear steer its just right or left axles but the front you have a inner and outter axle and the outter being the stub....

  • @WranglerYJ91 Okay, fair enough. I blame it on the part suppliers, then. ;) Since I learned British names for things (even though I have nothing to do with Britain), I go looking for a "halfshaft" because it's half the width of the vehicle, and it's not the longitudinal driveshaft.. Now, I know that's not what it's called around these parts, so I look for "axle" and the part comes back as "stub axle" half the time. Now at least I know. The term "stub" makes a lot more sense the way you put it...

  • I have no idea what a stub is. There I said it, lol Let the verbal bashing begin!
