This was the only Combo wearing the Van Halen label that worked. David Lee's arrogant vocals combined with Eddie's asshole but great guitar style that won people over...Sorry, but I lost Sammy when he joined...
@kadyvre1 you miss the whole point of the thing. I'll type slow so you can understand. This is a very early recording, probably recorded with a cassette recorder or whatever was on hand at the time, of a band who later rose to be one of the largest draws ever. Has nothing to do with the quality of the recording.
wasn't so modal, he was jazzy/bluesey and to me that's where it's at !!! I love Randy's classical influence, but I don't ever recall him playing a song in a major key.? Eddie keeps things happy and less serious. But I still miss Randy and I deeply admire them both. When I met Ed, I told him he was the Charlie Parker of Rock & Roll: best improvisor ever, period!!! Que viva Eddie!!!
1/2: @biffDipstick and @vhfanjack: In my humble opinion, Eddie was the better player, always , period. Don't get me wrong, I love them both. But Ed knew jazz from the household he grew up in and he knows how to make rock and roll swing!!! Randy didn't really have a sense of 2-4, and he copied the two-handed tapping from Ed (although he used to use a pick in his right hand, sounded more abrasive) and the tap harmonics was copied too (again with a pick)! Both possessed blazing speed, but Ed
Biff you asked if anyone was doing what Eddie was back then. NO. EVH changed the way we play guitars, arguably more then anyone. Why do I say that he never really had a music lesson, he imitated what he heard and thought his style was the way everybody else got that sound in the beginning. Of course later on he realized he had his own groove going and it was different, naturally the rest of us thought what the hell is he doing and loved it. He is creative to say the least.
great cover, something about this band is so special, ed is such a super player but dave is the best frontman ever, even though dave is not a great singer, its his personality that does it, he set the standards for a lot of rock bands after them, and this is way before there first album, just to have that confidence in all situations, not just on stage but also with the staff that worked for vh, coming up with the incentitives for doing a faster job setting up, just pure rock n roll
can't help but comment on this . sorry MIKEHANOO33 . but...you're 50% correct . it reeks of early VH . eddie loves to steal rifs and i don't blame him one bit . the stolen rif is george harrison from from the beatle's "baby says she's mine" .its' quite apparent . yeah the quality could be better but , its' a boot for crying out loud !
I can not hear a thing in this song that makes me feel its VH , its a really bad tape for one thing and I dont hear any of the classic EVH rifs or style , and the vocals are so hard to hear it could be DLR or Spanky Wanky from the green lizards .
Yes, this is a Sugarloaf song (same band that did Green Eyed Lady) with Eddie throwing in a quote from I Feel Fine by the Beatles. Its NOT by the Ides of March. I saw VH several times during this period, playing all originals and also TOP 40 gigs where they did stuff like this, Zep, Bad Co, etc.
I know this sounds like a dumb ? but do you remember which shows you were at? I have over 40 cd's worth of boots and the majority are from the early years. Maybe one for the shows you were at I may have.
I would love to hear your recollections over the phone some time about what it was like back then. If you can remember b.c if I was there I would have been going nuts!
I was born in 1974 and am a serious fan. Not a nut but really take them to hear. ~Gino
Never really had any conversations with the guys in the band, although one night our singer almost got in a fight with DLR. We played the first set then Van Halen played the second set. After their set, there was about a half hour of DJ music before we went back on. Right before they left the stage, DLR said that it was all downhill from here. Our singer thought he was dissing our band so he went outside and got in his face. Dave said that was not what he meant at all. Then they shared a joint.
Ahahaha! That's not the first time that that's happened! The same thing happened with Van Halen's concert set designer... Him and Dave had a falling out, but Dave got out of it by smokin a doobie with him :P
Who was better in those time, Randy or Ed? And were there any other guitarists that were doing what Ed was back in the club days?
Just that the whole night was going downhill from there. They were going to play another set, too, so I don't think he meant themselves. Who knows? He could have meant it as a jab and talked his way out. If so, more power to him. Our lead singer was not the most likable guy.
They were scary good, even then. Yes, a little youthful exuberant overplaying now and then, but the core of the band was unequaled.
Every great rock 'n' roll band started playing covers. (Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin, etc.) You establish your musicianship, style, and sound, then create your own songs based upon that framework and evolve (Evolution) from there.
There is no denying the fact that EVH is the single most influential guitarist of all time.
I was fortunate enough to be in a band that played numerous times on the same bill with Van Halen before their first album came out. We thought we were good. We were fools. It was obvious even to the casual listener that Van Halen was destined for greatness. They did covers sometimes better than the original artist, sometimes making it their own. I heard them play Man on a Silver Mountain, Slow Ride, Drive My Car, Play That Funky Music, among countless others.
This is a cover of an IVES OF MARCH song. They did it as a one hit wonder years before Sugarloaf did it. I heard them do it live at the Tulsa Fair Grounds.
Do you have the link from the VH Boots site for me to see? I have a real large collection of VH Boots (over 40 cds worth) so we may be able to do a trade if you are interested. Let me know...Gino
hey Gino, I can check but it seems alot of those site I got the bootlegs on are gone. I'll check back with you. I got it at least 5 years ago. ITs a good CD. I have that Demo VH CD too. studio.
NORRIN68 ..Sounds more like the greatest R@R band in the worold kicking some ass,Sugarloaf "Yeasel Corbetta" and crew had very hits IN fact they look like ants compared to the mighty VH..Mighty sugarloaf..LMAO..Oh and btw i like Sugarloaf but compared to the kings...PFFFT
Thanks for posting this. Where'd you come up with this? I keep telling my brother how short sighted it was for Warner Bros. not to have put this kind of stuff out. And so few early concert footage either. This kind of stuff is fun.
i think this was on "Dave's Back:Rarest Covers and Demos", which i got most of the songs of my vids off. Now i have a huge collection of boots in my hardrive...
Van Halen are one of my favorite bands but I get a good chuckle sometimes listening to their cover tune days. They range from pure brilliance to down right bad
Just goes to show that Eddie was one of the best even then! Even the sound quality is shaky, Eddie's guitar licks still make it well worth listening! Good work as always Eddie!

Very cool - pity they didn't do this in concert, or "Walk Away" by Joe Walsh. I
can just imagine DLRoth strutting his stuff on this one. Thanks for sharing it!
VH truly did earn their fame, played a lot of bars and clubs back in the day.

@teechef @teechef That riff was in the original music. Eddie didn't steal it, Sugarloaf did. And it was more of a tribute than theft.
