  • excellent presentation. most helpful for a new gimp user!

  • Great tutorial. I'd like to add, however, that maybe if you used a radial gradient instead of a solid color for the note it would look even more realistic :)

  • Wow!!Thank you so much for tutorial.I love gimp so much because simple to use and awesome!!

  • The burn tool did not have any affect on mine. Or no visible affet? :(

  • Wow really amazing I surely learnt a lot (: hope I make videos like you because you inspire me sooo much! (: x I love writing I hope you reply

  • WOW What a great tutorial this was. It looks so real. Going to give it a go myself see if I can do it as well. Thanks for you wonderful work with Gimp tutorials. Not to many good ones around that I've found. Will keep eye out for more of yours Take Care thanks

  • Excellent tutorial, GIMPtricks. Thx. Very professional and very clear. Q: Can you pls also dive deeper into the "dodge / burn tool"? You cover it here briefly, but i'd like to see more. I view it as a key tool. b.r., fg

  • Why do you have to create another layer for shadows if GIMP has Filters > Light and Shadow tool?

  • @GIMPtricks

What Screen-Recorder do you use for your Gimp tutorials?

  • @rjwarda Camtasia Studio or Camstudio.

  • Oops! Sorry! Forgot about that already. Will do.

  • No, this was after I re-loaded GIMP. Exactly how do I go about changing the font? And, can I change the font size while I'm at it?

Thank you! Oh, by the way, just let me know if you've already got a video for this.

  • @E5Bobby I saw you on gimpchat! That's the perfect place to ask these kind of questions. I'm a bit too busy to be the "gimp helpdesk" all on my own, that's why these forums are there, lots of gimp users to help each other. :)

p.s. Watch my playlist for beginners. I cover most of the beginner stuff like this in those videos.

  • Good news! I re-loaded GIMP and fixed my problem. It turns out that I had those dialogs but not in boxes, only as tabs. I did everything you did in the video and I am very excited. Thank You! My only issue now is that somehow my text changed form Marker SD to something else that doesn't look hand-written. Any idea how that happened?

Thanks again. As I said I'm very excited to explore GIMP!

  • @E5Bobby Glad it works again now. :)

Just change the font back to marker SD. Maybe reloading gimp reset the font.

  • I'm sure the problem is on my end - something I'm doing or not doing correctly. Thank you for the advice and for all of your patient help. You're fantastic!

  • This texts is from the GIMP instructions:

    GIMP has two default docks:

•The Layers, Channels and Paths dock.

•The Brushes, Patterns and Gradients dock.

I don't have either of these two docks and can't figure out how to create them. It looks easy when you do it but nothing happens when I do it.

I also noticed this text: Note that the Windows command is only available while an image is open for editing. Is this important?

    Thank you for your time.

    Bob

  • @E5Bobby No that's not important.

If you still have this problem go to gimpchat [dot] com and tell them the problem, make a screen shot of your desktop when gimp is open so people can see the problem and tell them what you did already. Mention my video and where you went wrong. Maybe someone there can help you because I am at a loss...

  • I actually think I understood that. I must be smarter than I thought. No, wait, you're a good teacher. Again, THANK YOU!

  • Oh, I opened the other video and can see that it is not you. Should have checked before I wrote. Sorry.

  • It's 6:16 p.m. here. It must be quite late there. Anyway, I wend to "Windows", "Dockable Dialogs" and "Layers" but the Layers box isn't created when I do that. Now what am I missing.

My name is Bob by the way.

Oh, and thank you so much for your time!

One last thing: in one of your training videos it shows a young woman with reddish hair - is that you?

  • @E5Bobby Search if the layers dock isn't hidden under another window. Or if it isn't already a tab in another dock, or next to the tool options already.

And yes, it's really later here. I was just about to say that I was going to bed. :)

  • No, I haven't seen your latest video but I'll be sure to check it out! Say, an unrelated question, sort of. Do you know if, once I create an image in GIMP whether that image can be imported into PowerPoint? That's the effect I'm really going for. For starters your Post-It Note would really look sharp in my presentation!

  • @E5Bobby You can save it as png file and then import it into powerpoint like any other picture.

If you plan on making several post-its that will have different text for different occasions, you should save it as xcf file first. Then you still have the layers in tact to edit later.

You might also want to think about NOT merging the text layer with the note layer so you can always change the text in the xcf file and then save as png for each different post-it with different text on it.

  • I'm using version 2.6.11

I would think that what we're using would be almost identical but it's not. Hmmm.

I'm in Minnesota (USA) but my grandfather was from Finland - kinda sorta where you're from - or at least a lot closer.

  • @E5Bobby Yes, we are using the same. Have you seen my latest video? It tells you how you can put your docks back to default, in case that's what's going on with your GIMP.

Yes, Finland is closer. Still not very close though. All the way up North.

  • You know where I'm getting lost? It's that your version of GIMP is different than mine and I'm having a hard time finding the same tools in my version that you're demonstrating with yours. Well, I'll keep plugging away.

By the way, I can't place your accent; may I ask it's origin? I meet people from around the world in my travels and it's alway interesting to hear other accents.

  • @E5Bobby I'm from the Netherlands.

What version are you using? I'm using 2.6. It's black because I use a theme. If you're on windows you can easily add a theme. I have a video on it. It's in my FAQ on my channel.

If you're on a Mac then whenever I say "press delete on your keyboard", you need to go to edit -> clear. The keyboard shortcut doesn't work on Macs.

  • subbed! awesome!

  • nothing else to say , ure just that AMAZING! subbed ! :)

  • @delilah90sassygirl Thank you!

  • Thanks! That's an awesome video! Love your videos, they've helped me be better at GIMP in just a day! Yesterday I downloaded it, and today I'm already making my friends go "wooow!! Howd you do that!!" THANKS! Keep up the good work!

    Btw, love the accent!

  • :] I subbed

  • Thanks thats a great tutorial as always.

  • If we were forced to judge people solely by their performance, I would have to say that you, young lady, are just amazing! Not only is this video great, but even your voice pitch is cute ..... ;-)

  • @EloheiPuntoNet I can assure you that everything else about me is amazing as well. Especially my modesty. ;-)

Joking aside, thank you so much for the lovely comment! :)

  • Yes, very good. I enjoy your tutorials. Thanks.

    P.S. Love your accent. :)

  • Very well explained! Thanks!!

  • @GIMPtricks I found that about 5 minutes after I posted that comment, lol xD

  • How do you get your gimp background grey?

  • @MacUhhBee See my channel, there's a FAQ.

  • Nice tutorial. But wouldn't it be better if you merged the shadow layer, and the note layer together before using iwarp? So that the shadow would follow the note ;). I don't know if it would be any better, but I guess it's worth a try :).

  • @Stenlos No, the whole point is that you don't do that so you get a better curved effect of the note.

If you do iwarp the shadow you should do it in the other direction. Try it! :)

  • @GIMPtricks Quite right. Initially, I thought it would have been better to do something like what Stenlos suggested but then I realized that the shadow looked more realistic if curved in the opposite direction. In pursuit of more realism, is there a way to make the shadow darker and sharper near the top?

Loved both of your tutorials I've done so far. I used to be quite intimidated by GIMP but I'm starting to feel more at ease as I use your videos to learn it. Thanks :)

  • @asmartbajan To make the shadow darker to the top you can try to use a gradient instead of filling the shadow layer with solid black. Sharper... Can't think of something quick and easy right now.

  • Excellent tutorial!

  • this really hepled!

  • Great video, looks like a work of genius for a beginner like me, i am just starting to like not only Gimp, but also GIMPtricks, Dank U :-)

  • Miss (Or Misses?) GIMPtricks,

You are great at what you do and I want to thank you for helping me and the others. This is confusing program but you explain everything like you would to the most amateur to the most experienced.

Also, is it possible that you could do a tutorial on how to make a 3D shadow of text? Please reply so I can send a picture of what I would like a tutorial on. Thanks, and I love you!

  • @AKartch Have a look at my Hippie Text tutorial and see if that is what you mean.

  • @GIMPtricks Not exactly.. It's hard to explain. I hope it's ok if I pm you the picture I mean. Thanks :)

  • Nice tutorial, thank you!

  • COOL make more tutorials, please!! :DD

  • Shouldn't you of curved the shadow? great video!

  • @Gustavo0929

Depends on where the light source is. This way it helps with the illusion of the note being curved.

  • I haven't talked to you in a long time! lol.

  • @Sebastianhobbs Same here. Creepy. ;-)

  • I really like the design!! :)
