Itachi is a good person. He only killed his clan because the hokage ordered him to. He left sasuke alive because he couldnt bear the thought of killing his brother. So this means he failed the mission. He left so Sasuke could get stronger and kill him

Sasuke always had the Sharingan. If you watch all the pre-shippuden episodes some of them reply Itachi killing the clan, and earlier that fateful day little Sasuke had asked Itachi to help him with the Sharingan and Itachi said no, and that he would be busy.

Or its just that Itachi is just too strong for him, considering Itachi's abilities are above Kage-level, then you cant really fault a Genin for missing him, Itachi is the strongest person who featured in the original series by a rather large amount, he makes Orochimaru look tame lol (using Fire style would be bad considering we already know Itachi is a Water/Fire element user (Sasuke is Fire/Lightning, Naruto is Wind and so on))
