I'm sorry it's late for a reply. But I'm an artist luckily, so I draw Haruhi fanart myself when I get bored. She originally has black hair. But then it's now brown, so you can see all the details in the hair. Even for me it's hard to draw details in black hair. Myself too, when I draw her, I color her hair with a lighter color than black. I hope this was of help.

That does explain why it looks much better with brown hair. It seems very obvious now that you say it that it's easier to show detail on a hair color other than black.

It's obviously harder to show different darknesses of black, than different darknesses of a different color. To show depth and layering, you use shadows, black getting blacker is much harder than brown getting darker.
