  • SNAPE! WHY DIDN'T YOU TRY THIS ON LILY?! *melts at his words*

  • Every time he talks it reminds me of Profesor Snape (Harry Potter) and i can't help laughing. :P

  • I do wish the volume was louder on this, but thanks so much for the post! I love this movie and this is one of my favorite scenes and Brandon is one of my favorite characters. I think this poem is perfect for New Years...what we think we lost to the sea during the storm comes back to us again if we watch the waves to bring it! Marianne thought she had the perfect prince who felt deeply, but he only played lip service to love and Brandon embodied it!

  • SHE GETS JAKE AAAAND COLONEL BRANDON? THIS IS NOT FAIR.

  • OH MY GOD this scene makes me giggle like an idiot

  • Alan is so sexy *swoons*

  • I love Alan Rickman lol He is an amazing actor :) <3

  • I never would have thought I would say I'm jealous of Kate Winslet....lol My god that man is beautiful! and why can't all men be like Colonel Brandon?! I want a guy who will read poetry to me...if you're out there, please tell me!

  • It's kinda funny that Colonel Brandon is Snape. Snape is my fav Harry Potter character.

  • Top Ten signs you just might be in love with Alan Rickman.

    Number 10:

You know exactly which scene selection on the DVD will bring his delectable personage onto the screen - Chapter Selection 9 = Colonel Brandon riding up on that huge, 10 foot horse of his

That's where I always start the movie!

  • First time I ever saw him was on die hard. I was young not even a teenager yet. I heard his voice and gaped at the tv for the rest of the movie. Now in my twenties I still gape at the tv when he speaks. He ranks top of the list with james earl jones and sean connery for shmexiest voices. And he is gorgeous.

  • video seems to have some technical issues, cannot hear it very well

  • Sorry, double post, but not sure if my reply is here already. I LOVE Alan Rickman's Brandon and Kate Winslet's Marianne the most! Well, okay, I only saw the 1995 and 2008 version, but Rickman and Winslet are my favourite. Rickman's Brandon is so sensitive and beautiful, without any anger that I saw in the 2008 version. He's my best Austen hero. Rickman's Brandon is the closest to the book depiction.

  • im like...obbsessed with alan rickman's voice 0_o...lol

  • I had the first 20 seconds(Brandons part) recorded and i used to listen to it all the time on my iPod..... Ah, Alan Rickman knows how to speak to a woman.

  • Hey, I just saw some of the 2008 version. I can't see how that Col Brandon works? I mean he's so masculine and perfect and dashing that one would wonder how Marianne wasn't in love with him right away. She seems, from clips I've watched, to BE in love with him from day one. I always thought Rickman did such a wonderful job as Brandon because he wasn't the obvious choice for a younger girl but she grows to love him. Has anyone read the book? Which portrayal is more like the book? wondering

  • @GrissomLovesSara In the book, Brandon is too serius and sad, is not handsome, but is gentlemanly, reserved and sensitive. Is a good man. Is not the choice of a young: Mariane marry him and come to love after.

    I love Brandon!

  • He is not the "classic" pretty boy Hollywood likes, but God he is gorgeous to me !

  • that voice.. <3

  • I thought he was attractive as Hans Gruber, but I fell in love with him when he was Colonel Brandon, and then again when he was in Quigley Down Under and once more when he was in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Sexy actor.

  • This is also by Edmund Spencer Now welcome, night! thou night so long expected, That long daies labour doest at last defray, And all my cares, which cruell Love collected, Hast sumd in one, and cancelled for aye: Spread thy broad wing over my love and me, That no man may us see; And in thy sable mantle us enwrap, From feare of perrill and foule horror free. Let no false treason seeke us to entrap, Nor any dread disquiet once annoy The safety of our joy;
  • Everyone who likes this should go out and study English. Nowadays, the beauty of it is lost on most of us. We've condensed it down to OMG! What R U doing? Very sad :(

  • Can someone give me the text he reads to her? Please?

  • @Serena2412 Doe eate the earth? it is no more at all: 5

Ne is the earth the lesse, or loseth ought:

For whatsoever from one place doth fall

Is with the tide unto another brought:

For there is nothing lost, that may be found if sought.

  • I just came.

  • @coolprankgurl LOL this is my favorite post! Too funny and so true. The best part about this scene also is that in the beginning Marianne is telling Edward that he has to read outloud with more passion! She's telling him how it should sound and infusing her 'passion' into it and it sounds so childish. Then Col Brandon reads the everloving lifebreath out of his poem and you get to see real passion. I wonder if the writers did that on purpose? I'd never want him to stop reading, Keep it coming

  • When this first came out I didn't really get the Colonel Brandon vibe but now I'm like oh yes! I was so happy he got the girl

  • @Ru66erChicken he sounds so sexy fullstop.!!! he has a very sexy voice!!!

  • whatever nine people decided not to like this seriously have issues

  • Love this bit. I wish all men were like this!

  • All the movie i was .. omg Marianneee come onnn Coronel Brandon is better than that Willoughby or whatever ...

  • I'm with you leda I'd have been in his arms as early in the film as the piano scene oh wow the way he looks at her LOL so sexy and cute.I want my own Colonel Brandon/Alan Rickman LOL.

  • If I'd been Marianne, this would have been a very short movie - I wouldn't have wasted my time chasing boring old Willoughby when I had someone like Colonel Brandon around instead! *sighs* Alan Rickman is something very special indeed.

  • watching this in my english class :)

  • Mrs. Jennings plays the Fat Lady in the first Harry Potter movie. I think there are six Potter actors in this movie in total.

  • @JessFeser six potter actors? Elinor Dashwood-Prof.Trelawny, Col.Brandon-Severus Snape, John Middelton-C.Fudge, Mrs Jennings-fat lady, Mrs Palmer-Umbridge. Who else?

  • @GirlWithBlackMagic Mrs. Dashwood - Madam Pomfrey.

  • @JessFeser oh yeah-thanks! That's weird! Ha

  • @GirlWithBlackMagic It just goes to show you how incredibly cast the HP films were. They had so many famous British actors and actresses in it, it's insane.

  • He could read the thesaurus to me and I'd listen. Attentively.

  • 9 DISLIKES-you clearly like reading some depressing stuff like Wuthering Heights-no offence Emily! LOVE THIS SCENE!

  • @GirlWithBlackMagic oh come on, you can like both Emily and Jane. Wuthering Heights is great and so is Sense & Sensebility, just in a different way. tsss

  • @77sakunarusasu92 Well...I love Charlotte and her Jane Eyre but I didn't take to any of the characters in W.H-and it made me feel down afterwards....i just don't understand how you could dislike this!

  • @GirlWithBlackMagic oh please don't get me wrong! I do like the scene, it's lovely and Alan Rickman and Kate Winslet are great actors. but I like WH aswell, I know the characters aren't really easy to like but I love the whole story.. I just don't think WH is in any way inferior to S&S

  • Alan Rickman could read a book on income taxes out loud and it would sound interesting if not sexy lol I know I'm not alone in thinking this :P

  • Incredible movie!!

  • If he recited the phone book i would still melt. OMGSHIES HIS VOICE IS SO FUCKING SEXY. THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE! ALAN RICKMAN <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<<3 :3

  • He's an amazing actor. I also loved him as Hans in the first die hard film ==)

  • snape

  • He has beautiful diction.

  • @ISayJessYes you mean pronunciation :) and yes, I agree. I could listen to this over and over and over again.

  • what would i give to be Marianne Dashwood right then

  • I don't even like Shakespeare, but with him reading it, I'm like "Lets read!" Alan Rickman is the BEST!!! Col. Brandon is so sweet! Marianne was SO lucky to get him.

  • Brandon is so sweet! I'm glad that Marianne goes with him!

  • oh the way he said ..."No, for I must away".....it was so sweet.

  • Alan. Rickman's. VOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Read me a story !

  • Oh that voice.

  • I cannot tell how great this video is for me. Cause Mr. Rickman is absolutely adorable man and great actor. Thanks God that he is fried of Mrs. Thompson, they are very good friends couple. Děkuji za video.

  • Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson were BOTH in Harry Potter. lol That works. I know Alan played Snape and if I'm not mistaken Emma was Professor Trelawny...

  • @slyrocks3 The woman who plays Mrs. Palmer (imelda staunton) plays Umbridge in Harry Potter as well.

  • @OpinionatedGeekGirl Hell, they got the entire cast. lol. I should actually watch this movie. I love Alan Rickman, and this was sent to me by a friend, but I've never seen the movie.

  • Comment removed

  • @divagirl408 Could you re-word that please?

  • @slyrocks3 sorry. i'm a bit dyslexic. i said would i be weird if i take the advantage of making out with Brandon on the chair?

  • @divagirl408 Oh, that must suck.. But no, I'd take advantage of it too. XD

  • @slyrocks3 You really should watch it if you haven't done so already. It's a great film. Aside from starring in the movie, Emma Thompson also won an oscar for writing the screenplay.

  • @OpinionatedGeekGirl Mrs. Dashwood also plays Madam Pomphrey in Harry Potter. How did they manage that? XD

  • D$#&! Its because of fictional characters like this that the men I know don't have a chance! lol

  • Oh Alan Rickman is the best Colonel Brandon ever!Oh I could fall asleep listening to his voice! I just love this film! Thanks u really made my day (alright evening right now but u get the point....no matter what time of day u just made it better)! :) all around!

  • I could listen to him reading all day ... lucky Kate ... and lucky Alan's gf :)

  • Is swooning a legitimate cause of death? If it is, he will be the end of me.

  • @jackyp1893 i want to like this comment a million times

  • I should die listening to his voice... I love him...truly,madly,deeply

  • 0:47 - 0:50: Alan, eyes-batting and a little smile. . . . *meltsssss~~~~~

  • I love Colonel Brandon! =D He's my favorite. X)

  • ok. i know that is Alan. I would know that with my eyes shut. ;)

but is that Rose for Titanic??????? i must see this now... love them both.

  • @iswim1457 Yes, that's Kate Winslet.

  • @iswim1457 hahah rose from titanic hahaha yeah LOL kate winslet

  • Lucky girl...

  • what is the name of the poem he is reading ?!?!

  • @lemongirlohyeah who cares ? He can read a telephone book...i would listen...*giggle*

  • @lemongirlohyeah Colonel Brandon's reading lines from Spenser's Faerie Queene. It's almost as exciting as the phone book in my opinion. But as long as Alan's reading, who cares really?

  • I thought Marianne acted so selfish! She was all in love with Willoughby and when he gets another girl prego and dumps her shes all like well I think I'll go for Col. Brandon now. She ignored him that whole time and he still loved her. Ugh! he deserved better!

  • @SuperPeace1990 Remember that her character arc was about growing up and maturing. In the beginning of the story she is very overly romatic, childish, naive and yes, selfish to some extent. Later she learns the hard way and ends up with the man who first seemed dull but was honest, selfless and kind, instead of the charming handsome boy who really was selfish and corwardly. I find it a good story.

  • @Feanorielle you are right. Now that I've watched it again im starting to realize that. I always thought it was a good story but Marianne at first just got on my nerves at first because of her immaturity. I guess I forget sometimes that we all came to a point where we realized we had to grow up :)

  • @SuperPeace1990

She is a foil for Elinor's completely selfless character. Col. Brandon got what he deserved because he deserves whoever he wanted. He's an honorable man we should all aspire to be like

  • I love this sense so much! So beautiful and honset. I love how you can see marianne falling in love with him xxx

  • when we had to watch this in literature, my friend and i were squealing whenever Alan was on, getting ourselves into trouble each time. :) he's well worth it

  • close that gate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh wow I just saw this movie and i realized that most of the characters return together again in the harry potter movies! lol!

  • @mckfrr Yeah I noticed that, if you look at many really famous British films, that a lot of the Harry Potter characters appear together again and again. Like David Copperfield, 3 to 4 harry potter actors appear in there. One of them is Daniel Radcliffe really young.

  • aww his smile at the end is so sweet ... you kind of want to kiss him!!

  • First time I saw the movie I was like 'What the hell, you silly goose, no, let's say you stupid bitch, you drool over that Willoughby twerp and you don't even take a look at that gorgeous man who swoons every time he sees your stupid face??? Oh, well. More for me.'

And that smile of his. Oh. Me. Gawd. *melts*

  • @2T5MUU I agree. Col. Brandon is a much better man than Willoughby. The fact that he is older means that he will appreciate Marianne and probably be a steading force in her life (something she needs quite desperately).

  • Oh, His voice is something out of this world! I can listen to it over and over again! Alan Rickman is a perfect image of the real man here!

  • love alan rickman

  • his voice is so beautifully chilling, got to love alan. ;)

  • *Has a Alan Rickman fangirl moment*

  • Away...where?

I have to help General Wellington offer up an ass-whippin' to a sawed off little Frenchman before he decides to take Britain like he has most of Europe.

  • i wish they kissed lol

  • I totaly love this movie and also alan is so great as the coronel :)

can you tell me what is he reading?? :D

  • He is reading from "The Faerie Queene" by Edmund Spenser-Book V, Canto ii

I love Colonel Brandon! Alan Rickman does a fabulous job in this movie!

  • @anneshirley511

    Thank you very much!! :D

  • I just swooned! Alan Rickman can mesmerize with that voice.

  • Comment removed

  • Brandon's voice is so... *shivers in happiness* amazing! I could listen to him talk in that calm seductive way all day :)

  • I LOVE Brandon ....and ALAN too !!!!! :)

  • Marianne is very spoiled and naive, and yet she gets the best man in the book! Sigh, all the wrong girls get the right men. Life's unfair.

  • Actually, she starts out spoiled and naive, but after recovering from her illness, and realizing both, how much of a twat Willoughby is, and how amazing the Colonel actually is, she "evolves" into a more sensible, mature young woman, and commences, in appreciating, how fortunate she really is.

  • @lilyroxmysox Well Lizzy got Darcy in Pride and Prejudice...

  • When do you guys think Marianne developed feelings for the colonel? I think it was during the rain scene and this one

  • Sense and Sensibility is the BEST screen adaptation of the book by Jane austen. Emma Thompson did a SPLENDID job at this one!! Alan is soo PERFECT as the Colonel!! I just LOVE HIM to bits..

  • OMG I love this man...

  • The way Marianne gazes at Brandon in the moment after he says, "sought," (at the 23 second mark)...her gaze perfectly matches the cadence of his voice. It's incredibly romantic!

  • Kate is absolutely amazing and stunning in this film. "Sense" is still my all-time favourite of Austen's books. I'm sooo glad that there was never another adaptation made of this. No one else could have done justice to this masterpiece in the way Emma did.

  • And to think how long he waited to hear her say that... *sigh*

  • And the way she asks, "You will not stay away long?" in such a soft, smitten manner? That NEVER fails to make me melt:)

  • If memory serves, didn't he have to wait another two years before she married him?

  • WHAT?! THEY GOT MARRIED??!!!!!!

  • omg that is sooo cute

  • I wholeheartedly agree:)

  • *swoon*

  • Oh, I just love them :)! Alan Rickman is the perfect Colonel Brandon. The scene is so simple and yet, it's the very essence of the change in Marianne's character and their relationship. In my opinion, one of the best relationship scenes of all time.

  • I totally agree with you!

  • Hahaha... It's Snape! :D

  • I have to say for me, this is one of Alan's most fantastic role's. To be loved and cherished by Col. Brandon, that would be a dream & fantasy come true!! Just the voice alone can cause sexual stimulation but add the face and body - man, that's my idea of heaven!!!!

  • I love how she looks at him, thinking "Oh, there is a man who can read with feeling!" XD SO unlike that other jerk. The way Colonel Brandon reads this is at LEAST 100 times better than John's way xD

  • Why is Colonel spelt the way it is???

Absolutely can't live without Alan btw.

  • I like him better with really dark hair the highlights he has aren't really cutting it for me.

  • wow its snape from hp..wat an awesome choice

  • This is one of my very favorite moments in the film...

  • Lovely!!!

  • The smiiiiiiiiiileee... WAAAH

  • Oh my giddy aunt... every time 'Col Brandon' speaks the butterflies in my tummy go bananas...

Alan Rickman had a voice like liquid soft with hunny stripes....

    Brilliant stuff...

    *SWOON* yet again... :0)x

  • He is so sweet :-)

  • this is one of my most favorite parts of the movie, in my opinion Col. Branon was always the most romantic figure so mysteriously charming and sweet and secretive.

  • YES!! Oh I would marry him in a HEARTBEAT

  • Me too, my friend, me too!

  • *involuntarily melts*

Bother! Thats the third time this week...

  • "The Faerie Queen" by Edmund Spenser. Canto II.

There are guys like this out there. It's the great secret of life: we're the ones women always place in the "friend zone."

  • God, that smile *___*

totally in love in that expression, Rickman's incredible actor, isn't he? :)

  • i've never seen this film:-( i cant find it anywhere! do they end up together??

  • yes they do ^_^

  • get it on netflix or amazon. It is brilliant!

  • he is so dreamy

  • The first time I saw this, I was like fuck Willoughby. Fuck him right in his ear. Colonel Brandon for the win!

  • His voice is so perfect, it nearly puts me in cardiac arrest. Oh, to be Marianne.

  • Snape! j/k

    Alan Rickman rocks.

We all need an alan rickman to read Shakespeare sonnets to us every night :)

  • i would love that! the only thing is: i don't understand a word of what he is saying - i'm to distracted from his gorgeous voice... *melt*

  • hey that' snape!!! :)))))

  • Beautiful film. Throughout the whole movie I felt for Colonel Brandon. Wow Winslet was my age in this film.

  • As someone said b4 his voice is like dark chocolate damn true!!! He could talk to me all day and night long soooo deep..... love it!

  • 0______0

If Alan Rickman ever read poetry to me, the man wouldn't be standing, if you know what I mean x3

  • *nod nod*

God that man has such a voice ...

  • I love rickman but really johnny depp is the one and only for me. don't hate me for it i'm just sayin' , Johnnys more diverse and that suits me better.

  • I must say!!! I love this movie, I have seen the BBC version of this and I like it but to me it lacks in Romance, this version, has so much Romance and bliss and love, I just adore this film!!!!, the best of a Jane Austin movie!!!, now the P&P movie now that is a diffent story!!! but the BBC version of that one is So awesome!! Love it!!. and I love this film, and Yes Willougby my ass, Alan is great!!, and his voice is so smothing!! gosh was a sexy voice!!

  • I love this version. they are both great in it

  • his voice is like a lullaby.

i can totally fall asleep in complete and utter bliss.

    oh god, its like chocolate.

    dark, smooth, and delicious.

    XD

  • a brilliant comparison!

  • thanks!

dark chocolate? -offers u a bar-

  • completely agree with you...my eyelids were getting heavy just listening to him...love, love, love this movie

  • I want him to read ME a poem... oooh my heart flutters in ur hands alan!

  • i would argue about who is better actor......

  • no hes not gay.....ya johnnys brilliant but alan is always king for me:D

  • God I love him <3

  • Willoughby my ass!!!! Alan is such a gorgeus man!! so sexy!

  • ME and my bro agree Alan has a cool calm voice.5 stars Dude!!

  • I think this was the right man for her.Willoughby was a liar and a cheat and she was duped by him.She deserved a real gentleman who was reliable and dependable.

No good being in love with someone who is so insincere and she deserved real happiness.

  • Alan Rickman is so smexy, I don't care what he's doing, as long as he is in sight I'm more than happy.
