  • The " membrane" is called elastin it's what doesn't go away when u cook it and gets stuck in your teeth. U can also use a skewer which is easier. And gloves work better then a towel

  • I don't know if it's coincidence or not...but I was doing a citrus rub on the ribs (sliced lemons, a bunch of salt/pepper - squeeze the lemons, rub the slices/juice into the meat well - I will use it prior to bbqing - gives a nice penetrating tang after the sauce is on). I realized about 30 min later I had forgot to remove the membrane, and it came off like nothing, I would imagine due to the tenderizing action of the acid. It lifted up, no knife, and just peeled right off! Worth trying again.

  • sometimes, it makes it easier to boil them for 15 minutes before trying to pull it off. Then finish cooking as normal.

  • This tip also works on St. Louis cut ribs as well guys ! I always remove the membrane so my dry rub permeates the meat also makes them fall off the bone tender ;)

  • To get a grip o the membrane, once it is started, just dip your thumb and finger in some salt.

    I use this technique when I skin fish and it is very successful!

  • Much Easier Way To Remove Membrane:

    use a medium flat head screwdriver, (The Screwdriver Won't Cut Through The Membrane Like A Knife ,This Keeps Memrane Solid, Easier To Pull) insert about 1/2 in. under end of each rib bone,Then use paper towel in hand to pull mebrane away from bone, Works every time!!

  • Theres this guy at work and hes always cooking ribs. However he never takes off the membrane. But people worship his ribs. But I always find his ribs to be very tough and not as flavorfull. Too bad though he has never seen my cooking and grilling skills. lol
