Ed is right. If the government hadn't injected money into GM and Chrysler...those cars and cars Americans buy would now be made in China by the Chinese. Not only would these workers lose their jobs but hundreds of thousands of others related to the automotive industry. GM and Chrysler....more than a year later, have bought back some of this share and are planning to buy the rest. Both have also been profitable over the last year as well.

When NAFTA was passed, Congress had a republican majority, so that alone would make it IMPOSSIBLE for more democrats to vote for NAFTA than Republicans (FYI, it was 132 Republicans and 102 Democrats). Clinton was forced ot sign it to prevent a trade war with Canada & Mexico (since Daddy Buish had already signed a letter of intent with Canada & Mexico to pass NAFTA).

GM and Chrysler are not destroyed, and will most likely merge in 2010 or 2011. Chrysler bought AMC in 1987 for 1 billion dollars. Still producing the Jeep/Eagle, that was AMC's. Studabaker was in business for over 100 years, and went under like nearly 500 other auto mfg companies in US and Canada.

Yeah they are messed-up in Lansing because they embraced Big Union Collectivism. Collectivism has a ceiling. If you overburden the productive elements of society, ALL will suffer. The saying "the Rich get richer as the Poor get poorer"; does not apply in Free societies with an established rule of Law.
