heh, thinks it´s kinda ironic that japan is known for silence and such yet they got so many speaker everywhere, they got police cars driving around speaking about locking your car and crimes going on, the got them at residential areas and politicians driving around.
we have been here in Japan for 3 months. We couldn't believe those dam cars with the loudspeakers! We moved into our new place on the 1st of April and we copped both the local and the bigger elections one after the other! For 4 weeks, we awoke to it and then walking the kids to school went past it every day at the train station.
I am glad you did a video of this! It is VERY real!
(Keep up the videos mate! I have been watching them for ages now. My wife and I watch every 2nd night or so and nod.
I'm so happy to know what people outside of Japan think about Japanese pre-election campaign. I have no idea why it haven't been banned to make such a loud noise.
OMG... that's really annoying! We had elections recently in Canada...and the most they can do is put up their signs on govt property (side of streets, street corners, and voluntary houses) and if they want they can make house to house calls (which might be more annoying but then again you can just not answer the door)...listening to them bicker about politics day and night must be irritating
haha i rember one time when i was in Kyoto. i was at a plaza and probably a couple of hundred people were there to. Yet it was complete silence, then suddenly one of these cars drive in and yelled through the loudspeaker until my ears hurt.
Yeah, and since it's only during the election times, it could be bearable. But I doubt many people would be happy in my neighbourhood to see that sort of thing start here... I would bet most people would side with my initial GTFO reaction to it. We get the elections on the television, newspapers, radio, internet, no need to bring it to our street too right next to our house. At least we can turn the television off.
I can accept the occasional ice cream van coming to my street and using the loudspeaker to play a tune but if the politicians would do it I'm pretty sure I would pretty quickly tell them to get the **** out of our neighbourhood. I've never seen that done in my country. But if I would move to Japan I would adapt myself to it, I promise, I wouldn't go rude on them telling them to go away.
You and me both are bored to death with politics. When I tell people that they say, "OOO you don't care about our first black president rah rah rah!" I say, yea I do....as a person....that's about it. : /
Hello! I live in Mexico and I work with a children's home. I was wondering if adoption, or foster care, or whatever else is related to children is popular there? Are the Japanese very generous and give to charity and such?
I find it a little surprising that in a culture the is supposedly non-confrontational and discrete there would be loudspeaker political advertisements. Seems contrary to the whole "not in your face" thing. And yeah, in other countries this would not only be considered annoying by most people but it would often be against the law.
I wonder if there is a japanese person who can actually call these loudspeaker cars annoying... I mean, they are so full with that harmony thing, bet they can't even complain. Not to mention firing a gun.
It was asked before but i'm curious too, do the parties attack other parties during the election, not like physically attack them but attack their policies during their or is it like everything else in Japan and really respectful and pretty much a peaceful process?
I really enjoyed this! Not only do we, the viewers, get a exclusive glance at how a campaign process functions, we at the same time...get a tour of Japan the common vacationer (whom visits Japan) rarely sees! ありがとうございます
This is interesting but after awhile I think those political advertisers would become annoying. In my country it is TV commercials with politicians bashing each other until the election is over also annoying after while.
This always reminds me of the Blues Brothers strapping an enormous public address horn to the top of their car to advertise a show. Someone needs to recreate that in Japan during elections.
That would really be upset if I just got my kid to take a nap, or if I was on the phone. I am surprised that there is not a time limit... even telemarketers can't call after 8pm.
When you said "get ready for this" I was expecting something very unusual. I was disappointed when I saw the van with the loudspeaker, we have those things in Portugal too. They are so annoying...in Japan seems worse as there are more vans and parties.
If I was a politician in Japan I could probably win the election just by promising to ban the use of loudspeakers on cars during future elections, it seems so annoying having a bunch of noise mobiles running around disturbing the peace.
Well they'd get away with the loud speakers where I lived if they set the propaganda to (c)rap 'music'. Then they can just go at it all night and I'd be the only one who'd think it's rude }:|-
Just curious what they are actually saying on the loudspeakers...is it "vote for me mr X" or are they saying policy issues like "We will cut your taxes" or is it more trash talking the opponents?
At 4:40 you passed a parked car while partially in the oncoming lane. At the same time a car was coming towards you. Does that happen a lot? Where I live you'd have to wait for the car to pass, mostly because they wouldn't move over for you.
The political supporters out on the street -- Here in Tallahassee Florida USA -- we have lots of local official's supporters do these on the street corners at really wide intersections (4+ lanes wide); will see if I can send you an answering video response if I can see one FYI. Thanks, paul
I'm am so sick of the van with the loudspeakers. It's like they are in my house screaming at me about whatever they are saying. Even my daughter covers her ears and says "They are so loud. Tell them to be quiet!!!!!"
Do Japanese candidates not do political rallies, town halls, and campaign ads?? For one thing, those three would be a LOT less bothersome than the crap shown in this video and not so in-your-face :P
@whoo689 They are restricted by law at how many helpers, funds, rallies, speeches and just about everything they can have. And they are only allowed to do this stuff 1 month before the election (I think it was 1 month, im not 100% sure). They arent allowed to send out flyers, make personal phonecalls or stuff like that, so driving around in cars screaming out their names and begging for votes is just about the only thing they can do when all else runs out.
@TheJapanChannelDcom you said those announcing-cars are every day around does that mean even on sunday? :C If thats so then they would most likely get shot down here in germany :D
Well it just so happens I'm actually quite interested in politics (I majored in it) and I'd love more videos on the subject in Japan, so I'm a little disappointed, but here's an idea: I've been wanting more from the Interview series, so why not do another Japanese interview on the subject of Japanese politics -- I'm curious as to political involvement and interest among the regular Japanese people.
here in Brazil... at least in my city... is pretty much the same... some times it becomes kind of annoying... and in the election day they just trash the whole city with flyers... and the incredible part is that one day after the election the flyers are all gone... its awesome xD
I hate when politicians waste the time of volunteers. making them put up signs (signs that tell the voter NOTHING) and doing other pointless things.
- these signs should be outlawed and voters should learn about the candidates through other ways instead of pointless signs. it would lead to better political process
Here in Brazil they have the terrible habit of distributing small papers and brochures when they are campaigning. But what's worse is that most people not only do not read it, but they throw it on the floor instead of a garbage can and the streets become a mess...
I think the concept of all candidates on a single"billboard" is a great idea that I wish they would do here in the U.S. And as to somebody taking a "shot' at the loudspeaker trucks;well, maybe at night time they would.
here in america, we just get politicians openly bashing each other in their commercials, and people with picket signs all over town...although some of the insulting commercials can be quite funny
Not only during election period but also in very normal days, we won't miss the presence of loudspeakers on the streets. Should be banned by law. I live in Tokyo where some Matayoshi Yes (Jesus) becomes active whenever election is coming.
Very Japanese! I like it! Loud and annoying but at least they are polite =D Here in the UK the candidates go from door to door and basically tell you to vote for them. I prefer the loud cars to be honest....
@TheJapanChannelDcom Speaking of elections in Japan, what do think about Shintaro Ishihara? He's been criticized on the internet for his vulgar style of governing. He also made a comment saying that earthquake in Japan was actually divine retribution. He's also been trying to censor the Internet and he's also made other comments saying that the Japanese youth have no culture at all. He's been quoted saying that cell phones, TV, and the PC has ruined the youth.
LOL! In your face is right! It's pretty easy to ignore politics if you want to where I live although it IS all over the news. You just kind of avoid TV and radio and you don't have to listen to them.
I hate election time in my area, politician ads all over walls, electric posts, phone booths, even on the floor, and everyones carrying a damn flag or bumper sticker. Its the most annoying thing ever, and when elections are over, the ads remain there...
In uk its loca election time on may the 5th, however there is none of this who to vote for. Cos of safe seats here, the people who win all the time just take you for grandted and don't even come to the door and ask you to vote for them. I live in a labour area and did not see one labour canvasor at all in the last election. You might see them in swing seats such as where they might loose it. Politicans don't really care anyway :(
we just have election where i live and i must say that car thing would not work in here atleast not in night people woulld get annoyed pretty easily escpecially if it is a party someone doesnt like there would me alot of complains how far back stuff like this has been done ?
What are they saying? They're probably polite, like all Japanese things, but do they say stuff like this other party sucks, vote for our guy, this is why he's awesome?
This reminds me of that video of you (I think it was you) looking out the window and that politician saying hello to you on his loud speaker thing. I want to watch it again, it was funny :).
A good source for some info on Japanese politics is the documentarye movie called "Campaign".

Pretty cool. In the States we get a TON of commercials and some people will put signs in their yards or on cars..

bub4444 10 months ago
here in america, we just get politicians openly bashing each other in their commercials, and people with picket signs all over town...although some of the insulting commercials can be quite funny

TheErrantWilder 10 months ago
can you vote in the japanese elections?
ApplausableGuy 10 months ago
@ApplausableGuy I'm very sure he can't.

@TheJapanChannelDcom ...and Ishihara supposedly was re-elected again. What a failure...
suiton629 10 months ago
@TheJapanChannelDcom Speaking of elections in Japan, what do think about Shintaro Ishihara? He's been criticized on the internet for his vulgar style of governing. He also made a comment saying that earthquake in Japan was actually divine retribution. He's also been trying to censor the Internet and he's also made other comments saying that the Japanese youth have no culture at all. He's been quoted saying that cell phones, TV, and the PC has ruined the youth.

soooooooooo annoying..........
especially those cars.....
GM050008U 10 months ago
LOL! In your face is right! It's pretty easy to ignore politics if you want to where I live although it IS all over the news. You just kind of avoid TV and radio and you don't have to listen to them.
THIS... this is insane! =P

we have those trucks with the speakers here in Puerto Rico and i hate them, imagine waking up by one of those bastards.

I hate election time in my area, politician ads all over walls, electric posts, phone booths, even on the floor, and everyones carrying a damn flag or bumper sticker. Its the most annoying thing ever, and when elections are over, the ads remain there...

Gah, after the sun's down? I'd feel like screaming out of the window "shut up, you've lost my vote. Now let me sleep!". lol
Horribly annoying if you ask me. I rather listen to crickets all day and night.

A loudspeaker on a van in a residential neighborhood at 3:40 ? Is that not considered noise pollution?
Colortiniz 10 months ago
I don't speak Japanese, but that doesn't sound like political mud slinging coming out of those car speakers.
SweetCash33 10 months ago
Those loudspeakers were...loud.

In my city they also use those loud speakers inside the cars all day untill the end of the elections, I was surprised they also do that in Japan ^^
AnimeH1ts 10 months ago
What are they saying? They're probably polite, like all Japanese things, but do they say stuff like this other party sucks, vote for our guy, this is why he's awesome?
Odelle5 10 months ago
Oh man, I think I wouldnt like politics either if I had to deal with that all day
TheBlayzinAsian420 10 months ago
