Mariah just recovered from her vocal breakdown back then. She didn't fully recover though but I appreciate her because at that time with her unstable vocal condition she was so brave to collaborate with such amazing singers(whose voices were/are basically more powerful) like Aretha, Patti, and Whitney.

Ok, I believe they are two great singers. Nobody killed each other in the video. However, they are two different singers. I think Mariah did a great job on the piece, and let's not forget that she was singing a soul piece and with no one but the best soul singer of our times... so I think she wasn't deteriorating at all, but yes, she was a back up to aretha... at least in this piece!
i think Maria made bad mistake trying to duet with Aretha. she came up against the true Queen of soul and was found wanting. It's also not about WHO'S MORE PREPARED bcoz both singers "didn't get the chance to rehearse". Nevertheless, Aretha brought the house down single-handedly. But Celine gave an unexpected duel with the Soul Queen. Both Aretha & Celine impressed the audience that night. Mariah never sparkled on stage & was OVERPOWERED by Aretha & Celine. :)

The NY Times is more credible than Randy's and Carole's judgment since it's coming from a neutral place. Randy's and Carole's came from a documentary about Celine so of course they're going to glorify her. For example, if there was a special on Gloria Estefan and the topic of Divas Live came up, I doubt anyone would praise Celine over Gloria

Mariah was just trying NOT to destroy Aretha with her Powerful Vocals because she kne that it was Arerha's Night. Mariah can takeAretha out of the map with one of her whistle notes. Mariah could NOT even "think" of overpowering the Queen of Soul because MC very well knew that Aretha is a MILLION TIMES better in terms of POWER and SOUL. @AntiBasher2 Oh! Please! We ALL know Aretha has not VOICE at all. She's GOT the Soul but that's pretty much it! Celine is a good singer BUT there is a reason why her mainstream career is OVER! And I just LOVE patti and her wigs AND Whitney CAN'T even sing ANYMORE. And if you are a TRUE Mariah Carey fan you know that her VOICE started to deteriote during this period of time because of the over use of her whistle register. But AT LEAST today she is STILL relevant and CAN STILL SING.

@AntiBasher2 If you think Mariah was trying to outsing them, you're mistaken. For crying outloud, when it looked like it was getting competitive, Mariah calls her the "queen of soul" to assure she was in no way competing. I wont say Mariah can outsing Aretha, but certainly if Mariah was to compete, she'd be much stiffer competition than what's displayed here. You'd be foolish to think otherwise.
It's called respect for the woman who set the stage for her, and I applaud Mariah for having it.

@SFFL1996 yes, mariah respected aretha and so was celine and other artists that night. so what's your point again? and for the record, mariah called aretha "queen of soul" right after being exhausted when she tried so hard outsinging aretha. and right now, mariah has deteriorated so much that she hardly whistle and sing live. so your dream of mariah going in "competition" with other divas will just be a dream. mariah had her chance and she blew it. what a shame. :)

well antibasher first off I wanted to thank you for posting this great video, it's an amazing performance of which I have the CD ... but what about your caption, I was sorry to read that. I think Mariah did a great job on the piece, and let's not forget that she was singing a soul piece and with no one but the best soul singer of our times... so I think she wasn't deteriorating at all, but yes, she was a back up to aretha... at least in this piece!
having said this, long live Aretha and Mariah!

i think Maria made bad mistake trying to duet with Aretha. she came up against the true Queen of soul and was found wanting. I know Maria's early stuff was pretty cool, but thats the problem, everything afterwards was pure diva. when she started the high pitch squeeling in her songs, i mean come on. Jeez. i think Whitney is way better. ( ok not now with the probs she has). once saw Whitney perform live. an absolute delight to b there.

I actually think Mariah did a fine job here. The music was louder than her, Aretha obviously has much stronger pipes in this key than Mariah, but they're voices are strongest in different keys. If you raised the key signature of this song by two whole steps, Mariah might have murdered Aretha because that's where her voice is strongest...

Mariah obviously raised her WHITE FLAG to Aretha to insinuate her DEFEAT. Better see the video again because you might have missed that (on purpose). LOL! On the other hand, Celine held her own and managed to put up a memorable vocal duel with Aretha. Now that's what you call - performance! :)

@AntiBasher2 I totally see what you're saying. But it's not Mariah's song in the first place, it's not her job to murder it, it's Aretha's job. I'm not trying to justify Mariah's "incompetence" but when you find a video of Aretha trying to sing with Mariah on one of Mariah's own songs, then let me know what the outcome is. I'm sure it would be interesting to see (even though Mariah probably couldn't sing her own songs right about now lol) not disagreeing with you, just questioning your criteria

@ryrythomasG011 It's not a question of WHOSE SONG was used for this performance. It's a matter of HOW TO INTERPRET THE SONG using one's vocal style & technique. It's also not about WHO'S MORE PREPARED bcoz both singers "didn't get the chance to rehearse". Nevertheless, Aretha brought the house down single-handedly. But Celine gave an unexpected duel with the Soul Queen. Both Aretha & Celine impressed the audience that night. Mariah never sparkled on stage & was OVERPOWERED by Aretha & Celine. :)
