@Timrath: Yes that is a major problem for people who have perfect pitch. The best thing to have (which you can also learn btw, I studied music and achieved it!) is to get a socalled relative-absolute sense of hearing. The difference to perfect pitch is that it's relative, that means you don't know what note it is when you hear a single note, but you'll know all the intervals from one note to another, so all you gotta do is imagine a certain key (major or minor) and go from there. It's worth it!
@matteomatwallace It's not transposed. That's how they played it back then. Pitch has always been changing throughout history. That's why musicians who have "perfect pitch" ears always have trouble playing baroque music. It's actually funny to see them struggle and suffer. Singers and violinists seem to have the greatest trouble, in my experience. Some even fail to recognise a piece if they don't hear it in modern pitch.
Beautiful performance. But did anybody else notice that (all the time that was showing him singing) he closed his eyes just a couple of times? I guess this is an indication of his passion and devotion!
@Ritzounett You're right. Handel wrote the Messiah in a very short time. He often performed it to poor people for little or no charge. He wanted this wonderful good news to be for everyone. He used to proceeds from the first performance to free prisoners in debtor's prison. Now, copyright laws prevent this?
@TrainedAccompaniment I agree that this is not too fast. It should be mentioned, however, that the tempo marking of 140 was not from Handel. Numeric tempo markings were not used until the early 19th century.
@TheAscoltati Just because most basses (or baritones) can't sing it at this tempo doesn't mean it is too fast. The score clearly indicates a very brisk tempo with agitation.
If ABC wants this video deleted for copyright infringement, they've got rocks in their heads! I love this entire performance, and bought the CD because of seeing it on YouTube. I would've bought the DVD as well had it been NTSB compatible. Thank you for sharing it! I don't see any other way I could've discovered these musicians, living 11,000 miles from Australia!
Accelerated but great.

If the prophet Isaiah could have managed that look of intensity, and had that great a voice, they might have listened to him.

matteomatwallace 10 months ago
@matteomatwallace Baroque pitch is it not? A half or a hole tone lower depending if it is italian or french baroque pitch.

@TheAscoltati No its not. The scores says that its tempo is suppose to be at 140. So..This is actually pretty accurate.
