Mark Felt was anything, but a hero. He had an axe to grind because President Nixon passed him up on a promotion as FBI Director. Obviously, John Dean would praise Felt, though. After all, nobody knows a rat better than a rat.
Mark Felt was anything, but a hero. He had an axe to grind because President Nixon passed him up on a promotion as FBI Director. Obviously, John Dean would praise Felt, though. After all, nobody knows a rat better than a rat.
If he feared for his life then he was indeed a coward. If someone does something brave for their country, they don't cower in fear. Case closed. He lived the life he deserved.
I know the difference between Colson and people who aren't Colson when Colson makes a statement that's captured on video tape. You apparently believe because you haven't seen something that means it doesn't exist.
How about a citation? A date? A name of the tape or the interview? This would go against everything that Colson has been saying for decades. This would have been big new if this had happened. Show some proof of this remarkable claim. I'm a historian who's read dozens of books on Nixon, done extensive primary research on him, and listened to extensive amounts of his tapes. If something this big that would change the historical narrative happened, I would love to find a copy of it.
Oh, I can't tell you that. No, I have to do this my way. You tell me what you know and I'll confirm. I'll keep you in the right direction if I can. But that's all. Just... follow the...watergate videos.
Nixon knew everything from day one. Colson said he was in on the planning, which explains why he used everyone and everything he could to try to thwart the investigation.
No, Colson did not say that Nixon was in on the planning. Quite to the contrary. Colson also has always asserted that he himself had not been involved in the actual Watergate breakin (he did not go to prison because of the actual Watergate breakin). Literally dozens of tapes after the breakin show Nixon and his staff trying to find out what had actually happened with the breakin and who had ordered it. There is no credible evidence that Nixon knew about the breakin beforehand.
Sorry, you need to do some research. Every thing that you've said on this page has been historically inaccurate. Colson did not say this ever. You are clearly thinking of Jeb Magruder's accusation. Magruder, who barely knew Nixon, did claim this decades after the fact but his story is one of the most shakey I've ever heard of and does not stand up to any investigation, which is one of the reasons that some of the key figures who helped bring Nixon down during Watergate do not buy his story.
(Continued) Magruder even said an easily provable lie during the taping of the interview in which he made this accusation. When asked why he never said Nixon knew before, he said that he had never been asked about this before. To the contrary, he has been on record saying the opposite of what he says now many times. His story has changed *several* times over the years. First, he said that Mitchell ordered it, then he said Haldeman, then he said one of Haldeman's men, maybe Chapin, & now Nixon.
(Continued) Also, check how he says he knew this. It's really an unbelievable, weak story even as he tells it. Colson, as with all those who were close to Nixon in the White House, denies Nixon knew anything about the breakin beforehand. Also, Magruder's accusation does nothing to disprove all the evidence on Nixon's tapes that he did not know about the breakin beforehand (and I've listened to literally hundreds of hours of his tapes) . Sorry for writing so much, but it's a complicated topic.
Dean says that Felt retired six months before knowledge of the erased sections on the tapes came to light, and how could he possibly know that? Felt was the number 2 man in the FBI, you don't think he had people in the Bureau talking to him even years after his retirement? The guy was a lifetime Bureau man, of course he would have access to that information.. how? That we'll never know, but he did.
i dont get the right wing idiots giving out about mark felts finally letting go of his deep sense of loyalty to america and the service in which he worked. Wasn;t it under the bush admin that CIA agent Valory Plaime was outed because her husband reported back that no yellow cake uranium was being sold to Iraq? An actionmade illegal by President Reagan of the Republican party!
It's going to be interesting to see how history will remember Mark Felt. Some say that he did the right thing by outing President Richard Nixon. Some feel that he commited an act of treason. What do you all think? Please reply.
It is ALWAYS right to expose a president acting illegally.
The concept of "jury nullification" allows for a president acting illegally but in a way that was justified by the particular circumstances.
Nixon was the traitor. Worse, one of his staff (Richard Cheney) took on board the idea that "if the President does it then it's not illegal" and took it to extremes in this maladministration.
MKL, what he did wasn't treasonous, but it was unethical. If he had knowledge of criminal activities, it was his legal obligation to inform the police, not to go to the press. It appears his key motive was vengeance against Nixon for not appointing him head of the FBI. Nixon, for his part, knew that Felt leaked info against him, but still testified on Felt's behalf in the early 80's, when Felt was convicted of a felony.
No. Felt may not have been ticked Nixon that didn't name him Director but ticked that Nixon installed a hack that used the FBI to quash the investigation, which worked until the press, with Felt's help, broke through the coverup. Nixon and Haldeman dind't know for sure that Felt leaked. They had a list of a number of people they thought may have been leakers, and for the most part Felt didn't reveal information but merely confirmed it.
No, thedps, you're wrong. Pat Gray was not a "hack" and he did not go along with the White House's attempt to quash the FBI investigation. A mere two weeks after the White House instructed him to stop his investigation because the CIA was involved (so they said), he called Nixon and said he could find no evidence that the CIA was involved and that he was going to continue the investigation, which he did. This was before Felt informed the press about anything.
Also, just to add too: During an October 19, 1972 conversation Bob Haldeman informed Nixon that Felt was leaking information to the press. This conversation is currently on YouTube: The Nixon Tapes: Deep Throat Revealed. This conversation does not suggest that they suspected Felt; it proves that they knew Felt was leaking.
Mark Felt was anything but a snitch. Without his action, the illegal and immoral actions of Nixon would probably never have been revealed. Mark Felt was a national hero and I mourn his passing.
From MSNBC last week; Pat Buchanan: So I think that Mark Felt was ashamed at what he did. That's why he lied about it for 30 years, and he ought to have been. He's an FBI agent for heaven's sakes, the top man in the Bureau except for one and he's sneaking around garages leaking the results of an investigation to a Nixon-hating newspaper? ------- Felt's snitch actions were ALSO ILLEGAL for an FBI agent. Where is your indignation at Felt?
