An example of a writer who is more recognized than his characters or publishers is Warren Ellis. He has done several characters and series on more than one publisher.
At first I'd buy the book only because of the character now I usually buy because of the creators. I used to buy almost everything Deadpool, but now I have realized that the Dan Way Deadpool book is the only good DP thing out right now.
I'm also a comic connoisseur. I really appreciate The CRAFT of making comicbooks more than following my favorite characters, like a fanboy. ALSO The Knaufs wrote one of the greatest Iron Man stories I've ever read with their extended Mandarin story 15-18, 21-28. I find your opinions highly questionable now.
I follow writers. I feel that any character can be exciting and interesting given the correct creative team.
I don't buy much Marvel these days, mainly due to the fact that their "events" are stiffling their own titles.
DC is a little bit better in that regard, IMO. Still, they have their flaws too. I do pick up more DC than Marvel, and more "indie" than anything else.
Elliott, comic book club just uploaded a segment today where they review Ash Saves Obama. They actually gave it a pretty good review, not that their opinion should matter to you, but hey, it can't hurt that they gave your book some praise.
We talk about it all the time, JC. We've had extensive discussions on how Marvel keeps putting out book after book featuring Wolverine, and just crowding out other titles. And yeah, fanboys buy it up.
i do like a finite stories more and more these days
someone once said to me about movies that americans follow actors europeans follow directors for the most part you think that's true? is that the same with comics?
im ok with fanboy
kind on this topic why would a creator working at the big 2 create a really great new character when they ca go independent and maybe get a hit and make money. i think thats why we recycle villians over and over again
By the way, I get how you want to be dedicated to a certain writer, but I really don't see why you'd drop a book because that writer left. I mean T.V. series have many writers. Some/Most of the time new writers bring fresh and new ideas to a story. I didn't like it when JMS left AMS but I still read the book (and it rocks!).
This comes across as so conflict seeking but I see flaws in fangirls. Many of the same flaws that fanboys possess. Just because of a different hormonal scheme all of that gets a buy?
As for the lexicon debate, why not say comic nut if you're high stress like jose or in my case comic head (flop head if i feel humorous).
Your argument over creator vs character trips over it self. Nowadays Western comic fans are getting like manga fans and enjoying following creators.
I agree that some authors/artists make a series. ASM, I'll read no matter who writes it or how hastily the art is done. If Johns left Lantern though...ehhh, would give it an issue or two before forming a verdict. Perhaps this is influenced by experienced editors making sure that a series has a consistent feel. Should we be loyal to them instead of writers?
Joking aside the idea kind of has some merit. For example, see how DC is doing oversight on Batman and Superman across their titles.
Hmmm this character vs creator thing also equates to corporation vs creator....just look at the vitriol spewed on the Siegel family by fanboys on Newsarama after their blog led to the Siegels winning more copyright back from Time Warner.
I thought it was fucking unreal that people would side with a massive multinational corporation over creators and their familys just because of their favourite characters...what fucking babies
I think the character vs. creator debate is the same thing as populist fiction vs artistic works. We don't know if we'll always like the artsy stuff but we know what we get from an established character. Chew has some popularity cause its different but do you think your friends who dont read comics would be likely to read it? Sometimes we want new but usually tried and true appeals more.
what do you think of the current trend in comics? the back up feauture? And Jose are you aware that agents of atlas will become a backup feature in Hercules? what do you say about that?
haha i knew it! anyways can you devote a whole episode on this? im interested on what you guys think would be a good combo. (you can even do characters that dont have a monthly now)
About Agents of Atlas going to be a back up in Incredible Hercules. I thought I replied to that specific post where it was mention, but it seems like I didn't, so I apologize for the late night hysterics.
As far as Kirkman, I think he's right in that creators should go out there an do none big 2 work, but don't knock guys who work on established characters especially when you can do both. Alan Moore made a career out of taking established works and making them his own
Guys I think it works bothways, a character like Sherlock Holmes or Tarzan endure despite their creators because well their freakin' awesomely solid concepts just like Batman, now a good creator will enhance that concept but the character is solid in general
Sherlock Holmes is public domain though so anyone can have a go at writing him. Same for Frankenstein, Dracula and a lot of pre-1920's characters.
Unfortunately companies like Disney and Time Warner have lobbied congress so much that copyright has been extended time and again on their characters so they are locked in a corporate creative prison.
It's public domain, but it's still someone else's creation. I think Kirkman forgets the opportunities working with existing fiction and universes can do. I mean is LOEG anyless valid than Astonishing Wolf-man or Invincible?
what if books had co-writers? that way if one leaves the other who was working on a book and then that writer gets a co writer that way the books dont take to far of a direction?

I like the back up features in the DC comics. I think for the most part they are worth the extra dollar.
And yes. I do know that AoA will now be a back up in Herc and I think that is complete bullshit. Way to fuck up a good thing Marvel.
