Interesting how this belief sets a paradigm for your morality. If there is nothing after death then your logic is flawed. Ending humanity would cause the least suffering. The only way for your moral code to work is to eliminate death as a option. Is evolution pushing us towards perfection? Or is there a god to help?
No, that Ardipithecus Ramidus is the earliest discovered hominid skeleton, is a fact. The process through which they evolved into present day humans is theory, an incredibly strong explanation for how these facts fit together that will probably never be discredited, but not a fact.

There is atheistic dogma, in the sense that many atheists will claim their certainty that nothing happens after death. You don't have atheistic dogma, you approach the question with open mindedness and the humble acknowledgement of a limited human perspective & perception. Thank you.
Death is 0 divided by 0. To expect a heaven is to focus on the denominator being 0 and forget the numerator is also 0, to acknowledge that death is oblivion is to focus on the numerator being 0 and forget the denominator is also 0. It's like if you wipe the data from a hard drive. From your perspective, the information is there, then it isn't. But it is impossible to consider it from the point of view of the information. The most sane conclusion it leads to is that I never existed to begin with.
The reason atheist Sam doesn't know what happens when we die is because God is what happens when we die. An infinite force that reveals the true Sam and places Sam forever with and only with his own kind...those who reject Jesus.
@lowellkylewilliamson dude seriously if you want to talk about christianity then go to a christian video. this is an atheistic video where sam discusses his views on death and grieving. and one question. why should atheists be more afraid of christian hell then islamic hell or any other sort of hell?
"Sam doesn't know what happens when we die is because God is what happens when we die"
So seeing you know you must be physically dead. Oh your not. At least Sam answered honestly. What you also fail to see is you have a belief, not a known
Beliefs are absent of facts, thus absent of truth
But thanks, for claiming something you have no knowledge of. Thus in effect you are a liar
@lowellkylewilliamson what then happen to the peole who lived and died a 100,000 years beforte jesus was born? Or the kids under 5 who die by the millions every year and pray to a the "wrong" god and have never even heard of Jesus?
@lowellkylewilliamson There is no proof for jesus outside of the bible. Not even one little scrap. He is a myth fabricated to fit (and sell) a bigger myth. Santa Claus is a nicer myth. So is the easter bunny. And Superman. He's a much better fabrication.
I was on K once and in my stupor I decided to ask the question of myself, which was "do I go on" the answer was coming to me, but I detached because I was too afraid of the answer, but I do believe it was there.
Huff..that's human - the very logical creature..human has limitation and can not see what behind the wall..you would never know until someone told you so..sorry to hear that.
What a tremendously calm, lucid, and honest explanation of his thoughts. Sam Harris is one of those people who gives us confidence in our species. I would only go one step further than what he discussed... I don't fear death.
It's a tremendous burden to live with fear, and I think a major task for every secular person is to reconcile their non-belief with the coming oblivion. Harris didn't quite articulate this, but it's an important idea.
@TheGerogero I don't fear death. I'm not nihilistic really, but I'm also not religious at all. I neither welcome death, nor excitedly anticipate it, but I think it's healthy to come to peace with the coming oblivion.
Billions of people have died before me, and most of them probably came to terms with their demise before it befell them. As Mark Twain wrote: I don't dread death, I was dead for millions of years before my birth and suffered not the slightest inconvenience from it!
@jsnake01 Well, Sam didn't say he feared death. He said he has "concerns" about death. He thinks scientifically, logically and therefore could not ever say that it is, as you stated, a "coming oblivion". Perhaps it is not oblivion. One might guess that it most likely is, but since none of us living, have died yet, we cannot know...and if it is oblivion, we will never know that either because we will simply cease and know nothing. Sam is being honest as we all should, we simply don't know.
@jsnake01 I want to say I agree with the not fearing death but I see it a little diffrently then you do, I am of the point of view that it would be far scarier to think that I may be in a conscious state for all eternity.
@jsnake01 Sam Harris rightly stated he doesn't know what happens. So I think that would mean he doesn't assume death means "oblivion". I also do not fear death but I also do not assume it means oblivion. I agree with you about fear as a negative burden; it has adverse affects on living - perhaps it is better to simply not fear the unknown?
We all have to live and die, so the truth about life and death concerns and applies to us all. True or false? Search "TRUTH CONTEST" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says to learn the Truth. Let's get serious and honest about the truth of life.
He was raised in a secular (JEWISH) home with a secular (JEWISH) culture. I'm not christian or anything else, but this man is obviously trying to attack religions like jews always do, and expell the competing cultures. He's a jewish supremacist.
@ericdemilo Thoughts are the opium of the masses, Religions might be more efficient ones, but actually Dogma are thoughts that arise not only in religion. For example one could say: Atheism is the opium of the intelectuals, It should be banned. Or for instance: everybody should think like me. Then I just take my word for it and it is stablished that these statements can not be question then there I have my own little dogmas in my head, who knows what I will do to push them onto others.
@am101171 ....You're right...that's why I only worship almighty Zeus from Mt. Olympus...it's just so logical, isn't it?....oh, wait, I just hurt baby Jesus's feelings and he is going to send me to hell...do you still believing that thoughts are the opium of the masses?...I am glad for my thoughts! :)
@ericdemilo I think Zeus is cool, don´t care at all for baby Jesus. Im ok with my thoughts and yours :) I still think thoughts are the opium of masses and intellectuals alike, the difference might be how orderly they are carried and convinced everyone is of their owns. regards
@am101171 I think Zeus is cool, don´t care at all for baby Jesus. Im ok with my thoughts and yours :) I still think thoughts are the opium of masses and intellectuals alike, the difference might be how orderly they are carried and convinced everyone is of their owns. regards
What I meant with Religious thoughts might be more efficient ones is that they might be more efficient in deceiving and making the carrier more " opium minded "
@JonnyWiseGuy2764 No. He's saying it's false because there is no evidence for it and thus the comfort derived from it is a lie. It's false comfort derived from people who made up stories to gain power over others. There is only one truth we have right now about death, and that is we do not know what happens when we die. We may find out, we may not, but no amount of wishing to know or pretending to know changes that.
@Mrmadmanbob: To teach my children how to grieve? Really, Sam? It was better said by Ms. Kubler-Ross four decades ago. Thanks for your comment, but in the end this guy is just a snake oil salesman peddling ultimate hopelessness. C.S. Lewis has a much better take on it in "Mere Christianity." A must read for all atheists if you find Scripture distasteful. I've read Sam and Chris.
@Redo12able Every aspect of religion is distasteful. It's all about self delusion and false promises. Promises about an unproven afterlife, an unproven soul, an unproven god or gods for that matter since man has made up millions of them. Each as utterly unprovable as all the others. America sure does a poor job of creating educated INDIVIDUALS that are capable of rational thinking. So sad.
@onefodderunit No. He sees a human being unencumbered by superstitious mumbo jumbo. There is no proof for a soul. When you die you're dead. Period. No heaven. No hell. Just nothing.
Yes. I'm fully aware of the Atheist faith that life is all for nothing.
It's very strange that Atheists can't see the soul in the eyes of people, and especially children. Perhaps it requires soul to recognize soul, and Atheists are something else.
Your Atheist faith is that life is an unintended consequence of a mysterious chemical coincidence, and you said yourself that when your personal life is over, you are nothing.
You can say "Life is for now", but your faith is that your life is no more important than a tape worm's.
@onefodderunit Are all religious people as stupid as you? They seem to be. Atheism is not a faith. It is simply 'no faith'. Faith is defined as - a belief in something even though there is no proof of it. There is not one shred of evidence for even one fraction of any of the thousands and possibly millions of religions and religious dogma man has made up out his fear and ingnorance. Can you provide any other than what you just believe or have been told? What REAL faith are you?
No religion is required in the knowing that inanimate matter is inanimate and did not create life. It's not Atheism against Religion, it's Atheism against Intelligence.
You're too dishonest an Atheist to admit your faith that inanimate matter created life.
You also believe exterminating unborn children is a human right, don't you?
@onefodderunit How life started is not relevant to the fact that religion is nonsense. Religion doesn't explain how life started either it just claims to know who started it.
Religion is just fables created to explain what simple tribesman couldn't understand and to create a system of mind control to enslave the masses. Science explains the reality of the universe through testing and observation. To believe in religion you just need to stop thinking and 'have faith'. hahahaha
@onefodderunit Testing has proven thaty atheists are more intelligent than people of faith. The higher the religiousity the lower the I.Q. except possibly for those that are in control of religion. They are very smart and use religion for their own gain and to tell the stupid fearful religious masses how to live and what to think. I don't agree in aborting children, just fetuses that are at stage of development science determines aren't viable.
@onefodderunit And your life is more special because you are delusional and believe in unprovables? How is your life special? I've never heard of you. lol
@onefodderunit They aren't children. And who cares, it's not like we have a shortage of people. Google.... Embryogenesis....learn something that science figured out and that religion never could. Typical religionist, worried about the unborn when there are millions of kids starving. Why don't you go save them?
@onefodderunit Matter is energy. Life involves energy. The smallest unseen particles are the building blocks of life. The initial 'spark' that started it all only had to happen once. All life forms on earth are just DNA replicating 'machines' which is why DNA is in every cell of all living matter. What does religion tell us? God made everything in six days and took a nap....wow..real thoughtful explanation. Even the pope doesn't believe that story thanks to science.
@onefodderunit Even though you're an idiot you're still made of cells that are made from atoms which are comprised of electrons neutrons and protons and still smaller particles called quarks. Life is an explainable force based on matter. Electrons are charged with energy. You keep repeating your stupid 'inanimate matter' chant like it's a prayer, yet you can offer no counter explanation. You are ignorant. You aren't insulting me by calling me Atheist by the way. I'm proud I am one.
Atheism is Orthodox Rejection of Intelligence for faith in a supposed mysterious ability of inanimate matter to turn itself into life. Atheism is Orthodox belief that life is unintended and you yourself have no moral issue with the extermination of unborn children.
Atheism cheapens life severely and you're proud of your child hating Orthodoxy.
@onefodderunit Life is unintended. You haven't answered one question of mine because you can't. The best countries in which to live are the most non religious. Europe is mostly atheist. Sweden and Denmark are prime examples that life without religion is better.
Your ignorance is getting in the way of a meaningful discussion. You just keep repeating yourself over and over again. You're boring and stupid. Go educate yourself and then we'll have another discussion. bye
@onefodderunit Well, rather the truth then lies, but we arent mistakes, nature dont make mitakes, we are a product of 13 billion years of cosmological evolution.
But i would rather say that the christian belief cheapens life, it says we are dirt when we in fact are stardust/nuclear waste
@onefodderunit It beats the hell out of belief in an evil vengeful pretend superman that has never been proven to exist. And I don't have 'faith' in the big bang theory. I have reason that tells me that science has a more realistic explanation for everything than ancient man made fairytales written by superstitious desert dwellers that believed nonsense like virgin births and boats that can carry all the species on earth. Read a science book...learn something!!
After all the hype, talk, argument and endless writing, he finally admits that he just doesn't know. On the other hand, he knows there is no God or afterlife. Give us a break, Sam. You're really dealing out only hopelessness. My goodness. If life is meaningless in the end, is that a meaningful statement? What a waste of time this guy is.
@Redo12able Sam Harris has not said that life is meaningless; in fact, he has argued that life does have meaning and that meaning comes from its finality. The fact that we have only limited time makes the time we hve all the more precious. And of course he doesn't KNOW what happens after death. However, lack of certainty doesn't mean that there aren't assumptions we can make based on what we do know.
@Redo12able The only meaning to life is what each person gives it. If you need belief in fairytales, souls, afterlife and any other superstitious religious man made crap then you need to seek help. There is only one chance at life. If the afterlife and souls are sure things why don't the truly religious just kill themselves to get there faster? Because NO ONE with a functioning brain actually believes it to be true.
WHAT IS SO FUNNY THAT ALL THE DIALOG BELOW IS WITHOUT SOLECISm AND THAT IS FINE, BUT IF THIS FOOL WAS TALKING ABOUT THE EXISTING OF GOD THE DIALOG BELOW WOULD BE AWFUL. HARRIS NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A WAY OF LIFE AND HOW DO YOU KNOW THE WAY BY GOD, THE BEST SOURCE! I WONDER IF YOU PUT HARRIS IN THE mIDDLE OF THE OCEAN , I JUST WONDER WHO HE WOULD CRY OUT TOO?
@Adennative You're saying that you believe in God because you want to, and not because it's true. Everyone wants to believe in God. No one wants to be simply shut off after they die. To think that your beliefs would change because you would like to believe in something, and not because it's true is insulting to human intellect. Hey, I'd like to believe that I could be an NBA basketball player. I'm not going to believe I can be one, simply because I want to.
Why do some Atheists act as if they have solved the mystery to life and we can just all go home and quit contemplating? Lol, these must be the fellows who dont come from a free thinking society, it's a shame they must be told by their science dictators what to think and what is and isnt acceptable to believe within the scientific community.
Absolutely my own thoughts on death summed up - thank you Sam (Mr. Dawkins and Mr. Hitchens too), - pity it took me my own 53 years to only now start thinking rationally as you do... but as the old adage goes - better late than never!
Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities.[1] In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities.[2][3] Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist.[3][4] Atheism is contrasted with theism,[5][6] which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists,[6][7] and with agnosticism, which leaves the matter of existence open.
@ScienceBri..Most athests take it further. Souls are another myth that sprung from religion as is the fiction of an afterlife (heaven/hell). These memes have been repeated to a large audience over time and the irrational religionists don't question them. Rational thinkers do. We demand evidence and since there is absolutely no evidence logically they are not true. No souls = no spirits = no afterlife = no heaven/hell. Prove they exist & u'll b famous with your own cult !
@toronto444444 -You know, you are only giving ONE very VAGUE THEORY to how the ancients came to believe in souls.. You arent providing me with not one bit of useful information in debating your case.. I think you need to do a little more studying and soul searching as well it may seem.
@ScienceBringsTruth Ancients came to believe many things that are not true to explain what they could not understand. Religious texts provide no useful explaination for anything. They only tell us who supposedly made this or that not how. It's all badly written fiction. Some people can't understand conscious thought (or personality) so they attribute it to a soul. Giving bad reasons/explanations for unknowns doesn't make them factual especially when they are unprovable.
@toronto444444 -What it is that you do for a living? Im a scientist, I study the plant genetics of arctic species at the University of Cornell. Just because you havent experienced something, and ur Atheist Priest has given you instructions on how to think, doesnt mean that what I claim, and what a MAJORITY of the population claims to have witnessed is false. Ur mind lives in a little box, consumed by less than 1% info gathered about the universe, but yet u proclaim no God as if you are CERTAIN.
@ScienceBringsTruth You're not a very good scientist if you even are one. 'Atheist Priest' - really? There is no such thing. Any real scientist would know that. 93% of the real scientists in the USA are confirmed atheists. As you would know if you were a real scientist for a thing to be true science demands certain standards be met through testing/observation/analysis. Religious supertstitions and claims of 'sightings' don't pass any scientific scrutiny. Read Stenger.
@ScienceBringsTruth We know far more than 1% about the universe. We know there are constant laws of physics that stand up to rigorous testing. Read God The Failed Hypothesis Universe written by Stenger who IS a real scientist. Any scientist that claims spirits exist should be kicked of the field of science and get immediate psychiatrict help.
What majority witnessed what exactly? I think you sweep up the dead plants in the yard at Cornell. You're not a real scientist.
@ScienceBringsTruth In the unlikely event you are a real scientist you shouldn't go public with your crazy thoughts. Real scientists are rational and planted firmly in reality
believe in provables. I am open to all ideas. The religious are closed minded ipso facto by their religion. All believers in a cult (catholic, mormon, hindu, babptist etc.) only believe their cult's religious doctrine and dismiss all other religions as false. That's being close minded.
@ScienceBringsTruth Atheists/ scientists would love to see proof of the supernatural. Think of the grants science would get to study it. All the evidence at this time however states there is no god, spirits, souls, afterlife, ghosts or creationism. Science easliy explains what has happened so far in the universe based on mathematics, physics and observation. Any grade 12 science student in Canada and Europe knows that. The USA is still (mostly) stuck in genesis and ID.
@ScienceBringsTruth 46% of Americans believe the earth was created as it is now with all life developed and in place dinosurs and all 4-6000 years ago. When people are that stupid and blatantly ignore all the evidence that says otherwise it is impossible to have a rational discussion. No rational person accepts myth over fact. Only the religious are so stubborn and pig headed as to believe fiction over fact. Faith = belief in something in the absence of evidence.
@callmesmorz Check the stats. The USA is by far the most religious western country. Evolution is fact for all of the 'modern' countries. For many Americans it's not even a consideration. USA students score around 50 in the world for science. Google top science students USA. They are almost all Asian immigrants. Approx 50% of Americans believe the Bible is literally true. I personally think 90% of those people never read it cover to cover. Religious folks score low on rel. tests
@toronto444444 i thought that the new earth thing was like some obscure niche that got alot of attention. when i was seven, and went to church (glad i stopped) i just assumed the bible was just a fairy tale.. . . . . . this is just depressing lol
@callmesmorz On the plus side the number of non-believers in the USA is now 16%, double what it was in 1990. Unfortunately the religious breed fast. Hispanics and Muslims in the USA have lots of kids that they immediately infect with 'the god virus'.
The USA is the only western country where people that run for office must admit belief in a higher power. At least 7 states demand canditates sign off on such belief. Americans are a gullible lot as it turns out. Sad really.
@toronto444444 Ive noticed the trend of societal peace in correlation to athesim of a countries people. (in americas defense, the "war on drugs" i think contributes GREATLY to the imprisonment rate, but what you said is true.) also i really dislike the fact that so many people are BORN into their religions, which is quite evident by how religion is sectioned off in nations. like, how there afre very christian and very muslim nations in. since thats their upbringing, they dont even question it.
@callmesmorz The god virus is passed from parents to children. The younger the better for the virus. Many hard core religious types like home schooling so as to isolate their children from different points of view. No different than any other cult. Islam (muslims) is the only major religion that ties the religion to gov't. Sharii is just an extension. Religion is the last great plague science needs to conquer. Everyday hundreds of people die as a direct result of religion.
@SuperBspb How old are you?..not specifically but generally....under 20, over twenty?
I only ask because it's your right if you're over 16 and (maybe younger) depending where you reside to choose where you go to school. You have free will to make your own choices. Your parents don't have a right to infect you with their superstitions.
@SuperBspb If your parents respect you as an individual they shouldn't stop you from exploring other opinions. Even the Amish let (make) their children see the world. 10 -15% end up leaving the Amish way of life. If your parents give you a hard time ask them what they are afraid you'll find. Tell them if their faith/religioun is solid it should stand up to scrutiny. Most people of faith know what they believe is full of faults. They don't even read the bible cover to cover. cheers
@toronto444444 so would you as a non-religious person give your children to a religious institute to be taught every day? thank you from refraining from hateful remarks, and showing care in your comments.
@justasimplechristian I would not send my kids to a religious school. I encourage everyone to learn about all religions to see how ridiculous and simple and far fetched they are. Nothing cures a properly functioning brain of religion like learning about it or reading the bible or koran cover to cover. Anyone that reads either of those and still believes in any of it surely must have a damaged cerebrum. peace
@TheMidwestsk8ter Religious people have brains and in most cases it's not their fault that they're infected brains. Most have been infected by their own parents who were infected by their parents. Usually convincing them to read the bible cover to cover cures the christian virus. The islam virus is more stubborn. Some of the infected will kill because of their virus. It's incumbent on rational thinkers to try to disinfect them. peace
@TheAcstdesnhorw You need a grammar lesson. WTF are you trying to say? Let me take a guess. You believe in a mythical superman. You believe you are so special you have a soul that will live forever. You have never read Darwin, Dawkins or Steve Hawking. I'm guessing you've never read the bible cover to cover either. You don't understand why the theory of evolution is a fact. When you've taken a grammar lesson (or five) get back to me.
@toronto444444 I believe in evolution myself, but no, it is not a fact, it is a theory. It is no less real than the "theory" of gravity, or quantum physics, but it is not fact.
@criket527 You are wrong. Hypothesis are unproven ideas. Theories such as the theory of electricity are facts. Evolution is a provable fact. Theories are facts unless disproven.
@toronto444444 Theories are not inherently less true than fact, they simply are not fact ipso facto, in that they are theories, explanations for facts.
@TheAcstdesnhorw Furthermore: you believe in the same skygod superstition as your parents. You don't believe any religion but yours is true but you expect others to believe yours is true. You base your opinion on nothing because you haven't really investigated other religions so you reject them out of ignorance instead of reason. What's worse is you probably know very little about the history of the myths you claim are facts. How right was I? 100% is my guess.
That's the Atheist objective, to be condescending towards those with soul, who don't share your faith that life was created by chance from matter, and was never intended in the first place?
@callmesmorz The bible is pure man made fiction. Even jesus is made up. There is no historical record of jesus. He is a composite of hundreds of preachers back them named christos. Virgin birth????? Thta's a bad joke that many religions much older than christianity used as a foundation. The golden rule is far older than the bible. Religion has been pushed back step by step by science for over 500 years. Almost a billion people don't believe in any god BS so there is hope.
@toronto444444 i IS reassuring, however, that there are at least a few nations that are fast becoming more and more secular. though America probably will never become a truly secular nations, there are a few places that are trending towards that, and i think that influence will only spread since more and more western nations are showing that trend. cool fact that i read somewhere: only about 50% of americans would be willing to vote for a qualified president if they were atheist.
@callmesmorz Ask almost any religious person about details in their holy book and they don't have a clue. Atheists know more about religion than the religious. America has more of it's citizens in prison per capita that any outher country. Far more than the atheist countries such as Sweden, Canada, Denmark. The higher the relgiousity of a nation the higher the crime rate. Athheists are rational humanists uncluttered by irrational dogmas and superstitions and false morality.
Some people are so ignorant because they've only seen one side of life. And if Science cant give them an answer, then the question itself must be a fallacy. Get real people. WE dont know absolutely EVERYTHING, we dont even know 1% of the wonders the universe has to offer. So how are some of you making these ridiculous claims to knowing the existence of God is False? Because you've never personally experienced something that was beyond this world? Atheism is a religion, Agnosticism is not knowing
@ScienceBr...You are quite delusional. Atheism is not a religion. Agnostic means 'to not know god'. Atheism means 'absence of belief in deities' ergo religion'. 93% per cent of the top scientists in the USA are atheists. Scientists demand proof before belief. They are rational thinkers. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are atheists. Some Atheists will say there may be a god but so far there is no proof for one. But even if there is doesn't mean any of the religions have it right.
@ScienceBringsTruth Before you spout off you should read what philosophers, scientists, the founding fathers and presidents have said about religion. In short they have said there is no proof for any of it. It's all fiction...man made and not one single part of religious myth from the MILLIONS of known religious has been proven. NONE of it. If one were correct every other one would be wrong!!! People of ONE faith are atheists to 99% of religions. Atheists are 100%.
@toronto444444 -Again u are assuming that science is going to bring u proof, I didnt say anything about religion being true. And so what if Gates and Buffet are atheists. Just because they were successful with material things doesnt mean they know anything about spirituality. I am saying: We are micro dust, in a universe that we know less than 1% about. People have had PERSONAL proofs of God/Spirits/w.e u want to call it. How can u say their claims r false? Just because u've never experience it?
@ScienceBringsTruth Gates and Buffet prove that you don't need religion to have a productive life. All the religious texts make a big deal about needing god. Many lead enriched lifes without religion or a god in their life. We know far more than 1% about our world and it's place in the universe. Even if you're correct that is not proof of fictional spirits, gods, souls or any other unprovable. It doesn't mean we just make endless nonsense up and then claim we can't prove it's not true.
@toronto444444 -Sir, it was, and is not an everyday thing that you get to experience something so extremely complex as such. I cannot just summon these spirits to come back and appear to me, I dont think that is how it works anyways. I'm sorry you havent seen anything for yourself, my wife is the same way. My goal isnt to convert anybody or make myself look like a looney tune. But I am a firm believer now due to my PERSONAL EXPERIENCES. What would I gain by telling lies? I study plant genetics..
@ScienceBringsTruth If you don't want to appear as a looney tune don't claim in a public forum you can see spirits or apparitions. Religion has many followers. Many delusional people don't make truths. Many used to believe the earth was flat. Many used to believe in 'the humours'. Many used to believe god made all in 6 days. Truth and facts and evidence are proof of things. People delude themselves all the time. Every person that believes the Noah's Ark tale for example.
@ScienceBringsTruth “No testimony is sufficient to establish a miracle, unless the testimony be of such a kind, that its falsehood would be more miraculous than the fact which it endeavors to establish” - David Hume. To see a spirit would be truly miraculous. The many explanations for what really happened wouldn't be. If you believe it do yourself a favour and keep it to yourself. Or go see specialist, maybe you have a tumor. cheers
Maybe when we die, our human mind wave travels into space searching for a frequency broadcast that can possibly be a fertilized egg which receives that mind wave. Develops into an embryo containing attributes from the parents. Then is born and shaped by environment and society but still has some previous memories locked deep inside those waves of memory. Starts to question life again. Just an idea.
I'm glad to hear Sam Harris saying he doesn't know what's coming after dead. Some atheïsts believe there is nothing. I agree with Sam Harris: we don't know.
@Maartenn100 I believe there is nothing after death, so does Sam, that doesn't mean we know there is nothing, it's just what makes the most sense. I just look at a light bulb burning out and realize the light in the bulb cannot exist without it's source. If you take someone's eyes out, they cannot see anything, which indicates that eyes are what produces sight, I look at a movie on the screen go away when the projector is broken, therefore it's logical to assume the mind goes when the brain does
@Maartenn100 Yes we do. It will be exactly like it was when the vikings were conquering the world or dinosaurs were alive or when the white settlers were slaughtering the buffalo. It will be the same for you as it was for me. Nothing.
It will be like it was before you were born. Nothing. Nothing bad nothing good. Like if you take 2 or 3 sleeping pills or get general anesthetic and can't believe where the time went. cheers
@Maartenn100 He's just soft selling it here. You have to take baby steps in the USA. Most Americans are quite superstitious and sensitive re; religion vs. reality / science.
It's amazing to most Canadians that evangelical style preaching works on so many Americans. Maybe you're all being drugged. The fact that many Americans don't accept the fact of evolution is astonishing. Even most world churches and theologians accept it as fact. The soul is the last of their superstitions.
@Maartenn100 Even the Daila Lama is on side with evolution. Of course Buhddists are atheists. Neuroscience has all but proven beyond a reasonable doubt that 'souls' belong in the dustbin of history with Noah's Ark, moses, jesus, the whole first chapter of the bible (genesis), make that the whole bible, all gods and all the other superstitions science has proven to be false.
What if God had evolved from the Big Bang and became a group of particles that obtained consciousness with abilities and forces to move and shape elements into planets and stars, people and animals, to specify the exact genetic make up of EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE? Doesnt sound too far-fetched to me if you consider the human race and the particles we are actually made of.. Dont be closed minded, Anything is possible..
@ScienceBringsTruth Is this particle god of yours aware of the misery of the world and can it intervene to prevent it?Anything is not possible.;and believing gobbledygook is not being closed minded
@henryporter101 -You are a piece of micro dust in the universe, and you've only been around for 100 years at the most... What makes you think you know everything about what consists inside of the universe and how it works? Leading physicists dont even FULLY understand the laws.. Theoretical thinking is ok, and everything i said is fully acceptable within the laws of physics TODAY.. you are too angered by what religion has done to you that you cannot even entertain a thought.. which is sad
So the "God" particle is actually the Higgs-Bozon particle, which is supposedly a particle that allows mass to be obtained by all the matter in the Universe. But what if there was actually a God particle, an element of some kind, similar to the Higgs-Bozon that would give these particles the characteristics for the ability to CREATE matter, through methods like the big bang..
I am a plant bio geneticist and i will tell you right now, if you are using natural science to try and understand something that is of the super natural, you are never going to get an answer, its like trying to use a hammer as a plane, its completely the wrong tool.. You have a heart that feels and a brain that thinks for a reason, BOTH are meant to be used.. Science can only be used in the natural world, for the things that God is made of cannot be obtained or studied..
@ScienceBringsTruth You're wrong. Read Stenger's books on the topic. There is no god or gods. There is certainly no proof. There is just as likely a chance that Superman and Sasquatch are real. There is no heaven, no hell, no proof for 'souls' or any of the other nonsense that simple desert dwellers made up hundreds of years ago. God / jesus and religion are all just really bad dangerous fiction. Only the uneducated and'or irrational still believe any of it is true. cheers
@toronto444444 -And that is a good opinion. But I'm sorry, you're the one who is wrong. I can tell you I have seen "spirits" that cannot be measured or experimented on by science, and you tell me that science has proved that "spirits" cannot be possible.. That is an oxymoron.. Science will never be able to determine the existence of God. Which is why there are so many believers.. I dont know if there is a God/Heaven/Jesus.. But I am 150% sure that when one dies, there is some place you go..
@ScienceBringsTruth You have not seen spirits. If you have you're the first and only person that has. I would go straight to the gov't with your claims so they can verify them.
Read Stenger. When you die your brain stops working and your body breaks down until just the solids are left. There is no 'soul' so you don't go anywhere. When a person has a deep deep sleep without dreams and wakes up and can't believe X number of hours has gone by, that is what death is similar to.
@ScienceBringsTruth Read what these people say about religion....Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Edison, Hume, Sam Harris, Hitchens, Dawkins, Einstein, Billy Joel, Penn & Teller, George Carlin, Jon Stewart (Earth Guide for (Aliens) Visitors), Stenger, Guy P Harrison, MARK TWAIN, Asimov, Nietzsche, Hemingway, GB Shaw, Vonnegut, Woody Allen, Freud, Gloria Steinem etc., etc., You need to expand your knowledge to overcome the brainwashing done to you while you were a child.
@toronto444444 -You say I'm brainwashed yet you have given me a list of people to read from? Lol.. Do you not see the irony? Sir you are compulsive and irritating at best, I havent gotten an intelligent answer from you this entire conversation. Please dont waste my inbox space anymore. If you dont believe that is fine.. But you're acting like a God Damned Christian by telling me my belief is wrong.. lol like i said before.. do you not see the irony?
@ScienceBringsTruth You believe in the uprovable. I don't believe in the unprovable. That's the difference. Science doesn't dictate what to believe. It provides theory proven by evidence. No one's had a provable experience with a god/ spirit or any apparition. No one can prove prayer works. If it could be proven beyond a reasonabel doubt there would be no debate about it. I can't prove unicorns and Martians don't exist but no rational person believes they do. Religion should be judged likewise
@ScienceBringsTruth I am just asking you to prove what you claim many have experienced. Prove there are spiirits, gods or what ever it is you're claiming. The whole world will be amazed. Look how they respond to a face in a grlled cheese sandwich or a face in a wooden door. Or magical fountains. We all need the proof you have to end these debates. So where is it. I'm willing to travel to see it. You prove to me what you're claimiing and I'll make us both rich. I am anxious for your reply.
Death has always been religion's greatest weapon. To both attempt to scare its followers and critics with threats of hell. A provide false hope and avoidance of grief to those who have lost loved ones
@eltopus4747 Honestly, what kind of god would punish someone for choosing the wrong book, or no book at all? What kind of entity would ignore all other contributions that a person had made? If your god exists, I wouldn't want to go to his heaven.
At least he is honest enough to admit he does not know. However, you really do not want to discover the truth before you die. Accept Jesus into your life today as your personal Lord and savior before its too late.
it is not a dial tone it is a busy signal. God's operator comes on the line and says "Please hold" then a recording comes on. "If your calling from a touch tone phone please press 3"
press three now. "if you wish to continue in english press 1 now." press one now. if your not calling from a touch tone phone or you died before the touch tone phone was invented please stay on the line and St. Peter will be right with you." you wait, "Your expected waiting period is 3.2 melenium."
What the world needs is a scientific analysis of the transformation of consciousness at death, a seminal idea provided by Buddha who denied the existence of God (all gods being forms of consciousness) a concept he shared with mystics of many cultures. The mystae of Eleusis transcended all fears of death over a period of hundreds of years. Deathlessness is fundamental to Aldous Huxley's perennial philosophy. Huxley deliberately transformed his consciousness at the time of death by taking LSD.
The universe evolves. The space around you is expanding every moment. We can literally witness this by measuring the motions of distant galaxies.
Matter evolves as well. We are still in the early stages of science and have not found the point where inanimate matter combined perfectly to become animate. This isn't FAITH when we can theoretically create our own life from basic molecules at building blocks. It has already been done in a very early stage (google or youtube Craig Venter).
Sam Harris is my hero, in a sense.

Harris didn't quite articulate this, but it's an important idea.
jsnake01 1 month ago 30
@jsnake01 Hmm do you really not fear death? I think that's an astonishing thing to say.
TheGerogero 1 month ago
@TheGerogero I don't fear death. I'm not nihilistic really, but I'm also not religious at all. I neither welcome death, nor excitedly anticipate it, but I think it's healthy to come to peace with the coming oblivion.
Billions of people have died before me, and most of them probably came to terms with their demise before it befell them. As Mark Twain wrote: I don't dread death, I was dead for millions of years before my birth and suffered not the slightest inconvenience from it!
jsnake01 1 month ago
@jsnake01 Well, Sam didn't say he feared death. He said he has "concerns" about death. He thinks scientifically, logically and therefore could not ever say that it is, as you stated, a "coming oblivion". Perhaps it is not oblivion. One might guess that it most likely is, but since none of us living, have died yet, we cannot know...and if it is oblivion, we will never know that either because we will simply cease and know nothing. Sam is being honest as we all should, we simply don't know.

Then I just take my word for it and it is stablished that these statements can not be question then there I have my own little dogmas in my head, who knows what I will do to push them onto others.

So sad.

You also believe exterminating unborn children is a human right, don't you?
onefodderunit 1 month ago
@onefodderunit How life started is not relevant to the fact that religion is nonsense. Religion doesn't explain how life started either it just claims to know who started it.
Religion is just fables created to explain what simple tribesman couldn't understand and to create a system of mind control to enslave the masses. Science explains the reality of the universe through testing and observation. To believe in religion you just need to stop thinking and 'have faith'. hahahaha

Redo12able 1 month ago
@Redo12able Sam Harris has not said that life is meaningless; in fact, he has argued that life does have meaning and that meaning comes from its finality. The fact that we have only limited time makes the time we hve all the more precious. And of course he doesn't KNOW what happens after death. However, lack of certainty doesn't mean that there aren't assumptions we can make based on what we do know.
MrMadmanbob 1 month ago
@Redo12able The only meaning to life is what each person gives it. If you need belief in fairytales, souls, afterlife and any other superstitious religious man made crap then you need to seek help. There is only one chance at life. If the afterlife and souls are sure things why don't the truly religious just kill themselves to get there faster? Because NO ONE with a functioning brain actually believes it to be true.

ScienceBringsTruth 1 month ago

ScienceBringsTruth 1 month ago

ScienceBringsTruth 1 month ago
@ScienceBringsTruth You're not a very good scientist if you even are one. 'Atheist Priest' - really? There is no such thing. Any real scientist would know that. 93% of the real scientists in the USA are confirmed atheists. As you would know if you were a real scientist for a thing to be true science demands certain standards be met through testing/observation/analysis. Religious supertstitions and claims of 'sightings' don't pass any scientific scrutiny. Read Stenger.
toronto444444 1 month ago
@ScienceBringsTruth We know far more than 1% about the universe. We know there are constant laws of physics that stand up to rigorous testing. Read God The Failed Hypothesis Universe written by Stenger who IS a real scientist. Any scientist that claims spirits exist should be kicked of the field of science and get immediate psychiatrict help.
What majority witnessed what exactly? I think you sweep up the dead plants in the yard at Cornell. You're not a real scientist.
toronto444444 1 month ago
@ScienceBringsTruth In the unlikely event you are a real scientist you shouldn't go public with your crazy thoughts. Real scientists are rational and planted firmly in reality
believe in provables. I am open to all ideas. The religious are closed minded ipso facto by their religion. All believers in a cult (catholic, mormon, hindu, babptist etc.) only believe their cult's religious doctrine and dismiss all other religions as false. That's being close minded.
toronto444444 1 month ago

@toronto444444 THAT MANY FUCKING PEOPLE BELIEVE IN A NEW EARTH??????? thats horrible. that makes me sad
callmesmorz 1 month ago

(in americas defense, the "war on drugs" i think contributes GREATLY to the imprisonment rate, but what you said is true.) also i really dislike the fact that so many people are BORN into their religions, which is quite evident by how religion is sectioned off in nations. like, how there afre very christian and very muslim nations in. since thats their upbringing, they dont even question it.
callmesmorz 1 month ago
@callmesmorz The god virus is passed from parents to children. The younger the better for the virus. Many hard core religious types like home schooling so as to isolate their children from different points of view. No different than any other cult. Islam (muslims) is the only major religion that ties the religion to gov't. Sharii is just an extension. Religion is the last great plague science needs to conquer. Everyday hundreds of people die as a direct result of religion.

I only ask because it's your right if you're over 16 and (maybe younger) depending where you reside to choose where you go to school. You have free will to make your own choices. Your parents don't have a right to infect you with their superstitions.
Good luck

Tell them if their faith/religioun is solid it should stand up to scrutiny. Most people of faith know what they believe is full of faults. They don't even read the bible cover to cover. cheers

@justasimplechristian I would not send my kids to a religious school. I encourage everyone to learn about all religions to see how ridiculous and simple and far fetched they are. Nothing cures a properly functioning brain of religion like learning about it or reading the bible or koran cover to cover. Anyone that reads either of those and still believes in any of it surely must have a damaged cerebrum. peace

@toronto444444 i IS reassuring, however, that there are at least a few nations that are fast becoming more and more secular. though America probably will never become a truly secular nations, there are a few places that are trending towards that, and i think that influence will only spread since more and more western nations are showing that trend. cool fact that i read somewhere: only about 50% of americans would be willing to vote for a qualified president if they were atheist.
callmesmorz 1 month ago
@callmesmorz Ask almost any religious person about details in their holy book and they don't have a clue. Atheists know more about religion than the religious. America has more of it's citizens in prison per capita that any outher country. Far more than the atheist countries such as Sweden, Canada, Denmark. The higher the relgiousity of a nation the higher the crime rate. Athheists are rational humanists uncluttered by irrational dogmas and superstitions and false morality.
toronto444444 1 month ago
Some people are so ignorant because they've only seen one side of life. And if Science cant give them an answer, then the question itself must be a fallacy. Get real people. WE dont know absolutely EVERYTHING, we dont even know 1% of the wonders the universe has to offer. So how are some of you making these ridiculous claims to knowing the existence of God is False? Because you've never personally experienced something that was beyond this world? Atheism is a religion, Agnosticism is not knowing
ScienceBringsTruth 1 month ago
@ScienceBr...You are quite delusional. Atheism is not a religion. Agnostic means 'to not know god'. Atheism means 'absence of belief in deities' ergo religion'. 93% per cent of the top scientists in the USA are atheists. Scientists demand proof before belief. They are rational thinkers. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are atheists. Some Atheists will say there may be a god but so far there is no proof for one. But even if there is doesn't mean any of the religions have it right.
toronto444444 1 month ago
@ScienceBringsTruth Before you spout off you should read what philosophers, scientists, the founding fathers and presidents have said about religion. In short they have said there is no proof for any of it. It's all fiction...man made and not one single part of religious myth from the MILLIONS of known religious has been proven. NONE of it. If one were correct every other one would be wrong!!! People of ONE faith are atheists to 99% of religions. Atheists are 100%.
toronto444444 1 month ago
@toronto444444 -Again u are assuming that science is going to bring u proof, I didnt say anything about religion being true. And so what if Gates and Buffet are atheists. Just because they were successful with material things doesnt mean they know anything about spirituality. I am saying: We are micro dust, in a universe that we know less than 1% about. People have had PERSONAL proofs of God/Spirits/w.e u want to call it. How can u say their claims r false? Just because u've never experience it?
ScienceBringsTruth 1 month ago
@ScienceBringsTruth Gates and Buffet prove that you don't need religion to have a productive life. All the religious texts make a big deal about needing god. Many lead enriched lifes without religion or a god in their life. We know far more than 1% about our world and it's place in the universe. Even if you're correct that is not proof of fictional spirits, gods, souls or any other unprovable. It doesn't mean we just make endless nonsense up and then claim we can't prove it's not true.

@toronto444444 -Sir, it was, and is not an everyday thing that you get to experience something so extremely complex as such. My goal isnt to convert anybody or make myself look like a looney tune. But I am a firm believer now due to my PERSONAL EXPERIENCES. What would I gain by telling lies? I study plant genetics..
ScienceBringsTruth 1 month ago
@ScienceBringsTruth If you don't want to appear as a looney tune don't claim in a public forum you can see spirits or apparitions. Religion has many followers. Many delusional people don't make truths. Many used to believe the earth was flat. Many used to believe in 'the humours'. Many used to believe god made all in 6 days. Truth and facts and evidence are proof of things. People delude themselves all the time. Every person that believes the Noah's Ark tale for example.

The soul is the last of their superstitions.
toronto444444 1 month ago

Only the uneducated and'or irrational still believe any of it is true. cheers
toronto444444 1 month ago
@toronto444444 -And that is a good opinion. But I'm sorry, you're the one who is wrong. I can tell you I have seen "spirits" that cannot be measured or experimented on by science, and you tell me that science has proved that "spirits" cannot be possible.. That is an oxymoron.. Science will never be able to determine the existence of God. Which is why there are so many believers.. I dont know if there is a God/Heaven/Jesus.. But I am 150% sure that when one dies, there is some place you go..
ScienceBringsTruth 1 month ago
@ScienceBringsTruth You have not seen spirits. If you have you're the first and only person that has. I would go straight to the gov't with your claims so they can verify them.
Read Stenger. When you die your brain stops working and your body breaks down until just the solids are left. There is no 'soul' so you don't go anywhere. When a person has a deep deep sleep without dreams and wakes up and can't believe X number of hours has gone by, that is what death is similar to.
