Hm, well, Lars did use more toms on the earlier albums.

Take songs like 'Motorbreath', you know that fill, and the main riff of '...And Justice For All' and those kinds of tracks.

But I think Lars probably found it unnecessary indeed and maybe it's also too much of a hassle.

I do still wonder why his still has 2 floor-toms... Probably uses it in only a couple of songs...

It's actually still quite similar, just 2 toms missing and perhaps some cymbals like a second hi-hat...
