NO RESPECT at all for Coldsteel as a company. They now boycott trade shows to not pay for a booth like everyone else. They started making their knives overseas, their profits went through the roof, and instead of lowering prices, the prices skyrocketed!!!!! They epitomize the word GREED!
Trailmaster can't do shit that I cannot achieve with my ESEE-6, Junglas, and Ontario SP50. All U.S made and more affordable... Plus the handle sucks compared to the ESSE and Ontario choices.
@BillyBadasssssss so wen did you buy a trailmaster and a few other knives and test/compare them? if you had done that you would have a bit of respect for this knife.
Hi I have a SK-5 Trail Master recently purchased in Australia, I used it as an axe to cut through a 6" cedar branch, it still shaves, its a beauty, I am very impressed.
Is this Carbon like the stuff they used in the 80's Trail Masters? or a lesser quaitly? im very weary on buyin anything fro china/tawian. Lynn needs to have these made in USA... i dont mind spending a few extra bucks knowing its made in Nortm america
Man those things are tough. I've seen nutnfancy thumping on his and since he gave it a glowing review, I thought i'd check it out. Can't wait to get one.
The San Mai lll is more expensive because it is more labor intensive. In my personal opinion i would say that the SK-5 is less brittle and stronger, but the San Mai lll would hold an edge better.
I just got one.... and they are really great value...... sharp, weighty and very very strong.... It is high carbon so it is just great for smashing everything in its path...
It feels very grippy too and would be great as a tactical weapon aswell.
If you want something that tics all the boxes it is this knife.
Hi They are avaible i presume when you got one. Do they come in black or polished or is it an option? what is to prefer? i like the polished but the black is nice as well. Is this the same steel as the famous carbon V? or a similar version? where did you get it? do you have a link? Best from Sweden! some of mine... Fallkniven: A1 S1 Coldsteel Mini Tanto and others... :-)
makitarules: SK-5 is not the same as the famous Carbon V steel they used to use. A couple years back, Camillus (the company that used to make the knives for Cold Steel) went backrupt so there is no more carbon V steel knives being made. Cold Steel then switched to SK-5, basically 1080 Spring steel, which is still a very good steel for knives. The old Carbon V steel was essentially 0170-06 steel.
it sure is nice steel, and from connections, most blacksmith in my region use spring steel to hand forge blades, from cars' axle and suspensions too if im not mistaken. Ive seen some knives from a police trainer who could break open almost any kinds locks. I wouldn't try it with my well cared for trailmaster, gotta respect the thing ;)
I am always taken by the hammering with these knives--awesome! I would like to see more tests like this done with the SanMai knives too (to see how they would hold).
I found my tool to defend against cars.

@porygon110
if you knew a single damn thing about knives, you would recognize complete bullshit when you hear it.
But then that would preclude you from the Cold Steel target market.

What would anybody say about SK-5 vs AUS 8?
zazszdzfzgzhzjzkzlzx 1 year ago
@zazszdzfzgzhzjzkzlzx In cold weather AUS8 fails, SK-5 is superior. Ive used it in -30 several times. AUS8 will break.

I guess you guys don't have any anger issues when leaving work :D

what about compared to D2, is it stronger than that?
YourADrag 1 year ago
@YourADrag Nope, SK-5 has higher toughness, but D-2 is stronger, and has better wear resistance

@WarzoneMerc SK-5 is Japanese, not Chinese; and SK-5 is essentially 1080 carbon

@csknives wicth 1 is better it in sk-5 steel or the san mai stuff?
meisahe 2 years ago
SK-5 is high carbon steel and San Mai III is stainless. Comparing stainless to high carbon steel is like comparing oranges to apples.

i no this but wicth has higher strength and is more regied
