While this was a very cute video many dogs are not this tolerate and may bite if put in similar situations. You Tube should withdraw this video because it gives the wrong message. Also a child should not climb on a dog's back because it can cause spine problems and some may bite if a child gets on its back. Also a child should never be left alone with a dog no matter how good the dog is.

I agree with you Joejay. Looks like people have been bashing you...but everything you said is 100% correct. Good thing this is a big dog or I guarentee this little boy would be bitten. I don't allow young kids to pet my dogs...they are too slappy and make sudden motions...which make most dogs nervous. Also the majority of rescue groups WILL NOT give a rescue dog to any family with young children.
This is a very moving and loving video. Real acting with no script just an abundance of love and loyalty. I continue to watch this video on my lowest times. We recently lost our prized yellow labrador at a very young age of six. He is sorely missed and not one day goes by that we think about him.

i had a white female lab for 4 years. the time came when i had to migrate to canada, and arranged for barbara to be adopted by extended family. the day before i left, barbie was found lifeless at the foot of my bed. she was perfectly healthy, and suddenly she died. i buried barbie at my backyard and left for toronto the next day.
why did she die, did she know i was leaving her permanently? do dogs have special gift of knowing? if dogs do go to heaven i hope to see her again someday. amazing!

Labs are one of the most loyal breeds (collies also) that you can have. They are a friend. When they decide "I love you" that's it. Game over. They will follow you anywhere, they will listen to any command, and they will give your life. My Dog (collie/spanial mix) recently gave his life protecting my 6 year old niece and myself when 2 men rushed us while we were taking him for a walk. He bit one of them, the other one shot him. He lost his life protecting his family. Thumbs up for loyal dogs
@randomx19 That is so sad. But yes they will. My daughter had a Queensland mix when her oldest daughter was small. She would follow her everywhere when they went to the park and growl at any dog that came near. My granddaughter used to bite her on the behind. Tasha had had enough one day and all she did was reach around and take hold of her arm. There wasn't even an indentation of teeth when she let go.

So sweet...you have trained Toby well! (When I was 4 almost 5 I did the same thing & got bit in the nose--my dad gave the dog away, straight away..he had bought a pair of Water Spaniels, brother and sister, and it was the Black male that bit me. Goldie, his sister, proved to be the ultimate dog--followed me everywhere, and protected me and my siblings from a ma bear! She chased it up a tree. It was on the dirt road we were walking on to the beach--L Huron. She was one beautiful, amazing comrade!

Did anyone else notice the smile in the dog's eyes when the little boy was climbing all over the dog? That was a HAPPY dog -- AND a happy little boy. @barryoderfer Simply because the kid is not supposed to play with the dog like that. It is not only about responsible ownership (the dog is great) and about education, whether or not the dog is very forgiving. In this case, the dog is ok with the kid, no signs of stress. But other dogs are not so child friendly. This is not a good example of how kids should interact with pets. Lack of early education in child-dog relationship is usually the recipe for disaster. This is why most kids get bitten.

We had a dog named Bo. She was yellow lab and white shepard - looked just like Toby! She was six weeks younger than my daughter. Then when my son came along, Bo, or BoBoDog as the kids called her (and of course that's what we started calling her, too.) she willingly accepted him into her pack. She was the best dog I've ever met - but yours seems like a close second - cause that's how Bo was with everyone! VERY patient, Very Loving. Thanks for posting!! Made me cry, remembering!

I love this - it's a special video! It always makes me sad to hear when people who are having a baby get rid of their dog or cat just because they're bringing a baby home. Animals ADD to our lives! and raising a child with an animal in the house teaches them love, patience, caring and responsibility - not to mention pure joy and always having someone to talk to when they're feeling sad or need "someone" to play with. This is an awesome video that shows that special bond between a dog and child.
Just kidding, my real point to comment was I wish MY dogs were that well-behaved! Mom spoils them too much, but Dad taught me how to handle them for walks. They're slowly becoming more obediant and behaved.

I see no signs of aggression and limited signs of ambivalent behavior during this interaction. The Dad was right there and probably knows his own dog better than you. Stop being so over dramatic and try enjoying life.
@DreamWelder Of course, I realize someone was holding the camera. My point is that I don't consider this proper supervision. As I said above, this is endearing, but those of us who are training and behavior modification professionals, who deal daily with people who consult us because the family dog has bitten their child and they are contemplating euthanizing their dog, look at this differently.
@ilovecanines That said, I should also add that I teach people in my puppy classes to handle their dogs all over, familiarize them with the sights and sounds of children, but to also supervise their dog's interaction with children at all times. One of my own dogs is an awesome therapy dog and incredibly gentle with children. I worked with her at an early age, desensitizing her to handling, including having her tail tugged. But I still supervise all interactions.

That dog clearly loves the little boy. And the boy is clearly just playing with the dog. If the dog didn't like it, he'd have that little boy for a snack. That dog is big enough to be a pony for the kid!
And if anyone ever threatened that kid, that sleepy ol' dog would give his life if necessary to protect that boy. Because there is nothing more loyal than a dog that is loved.

Did anyone else notice the smile in the dog's eyes when the little boy was climbing all over the dog? That was a HAPPY dog -- AND a happy little boy. It brought back some GOOD memories of my own childhood with a dog I loved and loved me back. Beautiful video! Thanks so much for sharing it with the world.

@barryoderfer Simply because the kid is not supposed to play with the dog like that. It is not only about responsible ownership (the dog is great) and about education, whether or not the dog is very forgiving. In this case, the dog is ok with the kid, no signs of stress. But other dogs are not so child friendly. This is not a good example of how kids should interact with pets. Lack of early education in child-dog relationship is usually the recipe for disaster. This is why most kids get bitten.

We had a dog named Bo. She was yellow lab and white shepard - looked just like Toby! She was six weeks younger than my daughter. Then when my son came along, Bo, or BoBoDog as the kids called her (and of course that's what we started calling her, too.) she willingly accepted him into her pack. She was the best dog I've ever met - but yours seems like a close second - cause that's how Bo was with everyone! VERY patient, Very Loving. Thanks for posting!! Made me cry, remembering!

I love this - it's a special video! It always makes me sad to hear when people who are having a baby get rid of their dog or cat just because they're bringing a baby home. Animals ADD to our lives! and raising a child with an animal in the house teaches them love, patience, caring and responsibility - not to mention pure joy and always having someone to talk to when they're feeling sad or need "someone" to play with. This is an awesome video that shows that special bond between a dog and child.

Just kidding, my real point to comment was I wish MY dogs were that well-behaved! Mom spoils them too much, but Dad taught me how to handle them for walks. They're slowly becoming more obediant and behaved.

I love the way the dog follows his little boy everywhere. The dog knows that little boys play with dirt, rock and sticks. This little boy is giving nothing but love to this dog. This is precious!

Beautiful! I know Joshua will appreciate this pictorial tribute in later years more than you could ever imagine! What a lovely way to remember the sharing long after he's grown up and his pal has gone on to green(er) pastures. One of the absolutely wonderful moments in a kid's life captured on video for when he gets older!!! To Jay, "the Dad and videographer" - great job!! What a gift to him when he is older and what a wonderful way to teach love, openness, friendship and trust. A boy (or girl) can enrich thier lives with a pet and this teaches that! By the way, Toby has got to be one of the most amazing dogs on this planet! Give him a pat on the head for me :-)

I love it! Retreivers are just the best kid dogs ever. I miss my own dog, but I get to have visits from my dog-nephew Bubba. Gives me my furry friend time. :-)

@DreamWelder your son is adorable and your lab is a true lab, sweet and true to the bone. My first dog was a lab golden retriever mix and was a surrogate mom to my sister and me, I love seeing dogs have that same relationship with their family. I hope that you, your son Toby and all of your family have many many happy healthy years together

My husband and I have two of the most love-filled Labradors at home with us. We wholeheartedly adore them. Anyone who has felt the joy of a Lab I imagine will appreciate this video. I am delightfully four months pregnant with our first child and I can't tell you how much I look forward to the sweet moments like these that you have so sincerely captured and shared in your video. It's beyond precious. It brought me to tears :)

@ilovecanines I'm a decoy, handler, trainer and behavior modification specialist with 30 yrs experience. I specialize in aggression. Please don't feign to speak for all of us in the profession. I see no signs of aggression and limited signs of ambivalent behavior during this interaction. The Dad was right there and probably knows his own dog better than you. Stop being so over dramatic and try enjoying life.

@DreamWelder Of course, I realize someone was holding the camera. My point is that I don't consider this proper supervision. As I said above, this is endearing, but those of us who are training and behavior modification professionals, who deal daily with people who consult us because the family dog has bitten their child and they are contemplating euthanizing their dog, look at this differently.

@ilovecanines That said, I should also add that I teach people in my puppy classes to handle their dogs all over, familiarize them with the sights and sounds of children, but to also supervise their dog's interaction with children at all times. One of my own dogs is an awesome therapy dog and incredibly gentle with children. I worked with her at an early age, desensitizing her to handling, including having her tail tugged. But I still supervise all interactions.

love this video - true love of the furry kind between a boy and his dog. we had a dog like this dog and we named him Big Mac and he lived to be almost 17 which was old for a dog of this size. we still miss him and love him - we even had his name on a birck down town on the animal walk at the river front gazebo ...

That dog clearly loves the little boy. And the boy is clearly just playing with the dog. If the dog didn't like it, he'd have that little boy for a snack. That dog is big enough to be a pony for the kid!
And if anyone ever threatened that kid, that sleepy ol' dog would give his life if necessary to protect that boy. Because there is nothing more loyal than a dog that is loved.
