I can give at least a 100 other athletes that are in the same ranking as these if not far superior. Their Veganism has nothing to do with their success, Or I could say that those other 100 athletes' success is from being omnivorous. Micheal Phelps, Alexander Dityatin, Vitaly Scherbo, Eric Heiden, Mario Lameux, Mike Tyson (when he was competing), Ken Shamrock (Who could wip Mac Danzig's scrawny ass) Mac Danzig's 5'8" weighing 155lbs for Christ's Sake! Anyway, the list goes on...
@HanumanLoki all else being equal and if the vegan keeps his intake of good quality protein up, the vegan should have the advantage. The food they comsume is for the most part less toxic and generally more healthy. As far as possible, all else being equal, a less toxic more healthy athlete will always perform better. Their recovery from exercise for one will be better. Moreover, a relatively toxin free body is likely to be more anabolic. BTW, im not a vegan or vegitarian
@pete26785 Given that eating meat actually causes toxin buildup.... With all the science behind training and diet, if the vegan diet was the best then everyone would be a vegan, plain and simple. Athletes don't give a crap about what they eat if it's going to make them the best they can be. The vegan diet is absolutely terrible for my body at this time in life. I gave it a try for 3 months and lost 15 lbs in a bad way, all muscle, ate complete proteins and all... Just not for me!
@HanumanLoki they will perform better if they eat meat -especially strength type athletes.
"he vegan diet is absolutely terrible for my body at this time in life." fair enough, if you think so but how do i know that you are eating what could be called a "high quality" vegan diet? Moreover, it is probably going to take your body some time before it feels right again -it is similar to coming off a drug
"if the vegan diet was the best then everyone would be a vegan, plain and simple" -wrong. I dont see why this would be the case. Most athletes are eating meat as, like the rest of us, they have been socially conditioned to do so. Meat is big business and it is often very tasty. Also, some athletes are under the false illusion that
@pete26785 There's very little research done out there except I found a few studies. Compared to vegetarians; Omnivores Testosterone levels were higher. That might be because only "Pussies" are being vegetarians right now. Despite what is big business, athletes and nutritionists only care about results. If being a vegan got the best results, WAY more athletes would become vegans. I was eating a High quality vegetarian diet when I was, if you really need me to I can write it out.
@HanumanLoki You will have plenty articles on vegitarianism and muscular development/performance; the vegan articles are scattered around and do seem harder to find. Im going to ignore the pegorative bit in the middle -its just silly, lol. Provided the studies were valid, maybe it was the testosterone given to the animals they were eating that was increasing their own testosterone levels -not the meat itself??
@HanumanLoki "athletes and nutritionists only care about results" -we both know this is not true, if that were the case everybody would be taking some kind of illegal ergogenic aid. I think athletes are not beceoming vegans at the desirable rate largely due to social conditioning/brain washing and ignorance. It simply wouldent dawn on most of them who are in any event unknowingly addicted to meat and maybe under the misguided impression tat its essential for ultimate performance.
@pete26785 Let's keep eachother posted, It's much more expensive, I was hungry as hell all the time, B6 and B12 can be gotten from dulsi (seaweed) if you are going vegan! Oh ya eating local and organic when I could too
@HanumanLoki in any event, it would be great if you could write out the vegitarian diet. I am a big meat eater at present but as a result of educating myself on pros and cons of meat eating I would like to at least try vegitarianism.
@pete26785 Sure, ya that part about pussies was supposed to be silly, though it may stand for something. I was vegetarian, so I was eating eggs everyday, Avocado, papaya, bananas, (I live in hawaii so had plenty fresh organic fruits) Usual salads, took a whey supplement, Hemp seeds, Quinoa, rice beans.... Thinking about giving it a go again though to see what happens now that I'm older (27) was 23 when I gave it ago. My sex drive did go to the crapper and I did loose muscle mass....
@HanumanLoki lucky you, living in that part of the world with access to all those wonderful foods. yeah, eggs are great. a suppliment called ZMA is good for sex drive and has been shown to increase testosrerone levels. what do you think of quorn
@pete26785 Check out Wiki's page for ZMA it has independent studies listed of ZMA's affect on testosterone, Doesn't look good there. Quorn looks cool, Don't know much about it, it's listed as a complete protein. Looks like the testosterone thing is the only problem which explains the reactions I had being a vegetarian.
An athlete who always gets left out of these lists is boxer Timothy Bradley. I suppose he's just not as well known for whatever reason but he's more highly rated then Danzig as far as combat athletes and should be getting more of the attention. People will know him soon because he's fighting Manny Pacquiao in June.
only complaint I have is Carl Lewis should be #1. 4 golds in a row for the long jump. That alone makes him the greatest athlete ever. Vegan or meat eater!
@fitfortwotv, Jake Shields switched to vegan in 2011. The Diaz brothers may eat a lot of plants lately, but they still consume meat, so they aren't vegetarians at all.
I am a high level vegan athlete with a degree in exercise science. Check out my site modernlifestyleblog

@AnatomicalALIGNMENT, Although impressive, Harley isn't at the top of the game like the ones listed here.

Although I'm glad to learn that Mike Tyson has now become vegan, I would consider leaving him off this particular list for several reasons:
1) Unlike Carl Lewis and George Laraques, he didn't compete as a vegan.
2) He cages and breeds pigeons. Although I know he loves them, I struggle to think that's a part of the vegan spirit.
3) There are definitely other vegan athletes that could be considered.
Thanks for the list though. They're all successful and inspirational. I saw Scott Jurek speak.
