there's clearly a reason why. he's calling you / warn you that he need attention / let out to play. Type "chinchillas sounds" on google. you'll find some site explaining the sounds.
They make this call if they think they're in danger, if you're sure that your Chin is asleep, then it was probably just a nightmare. If it wasn't asleep, then maybe it seen something that scared it, or heard something that also scared it.
Sneezing, haha I laughed so hard at that. It's called barking, and chinchillas make this sound when something scares them or they are extremely unhappy. The sound before is just him pulling in enough are into his lungs to make the noise, kind of like how we take a deep breath before talking or singing.
my chin makes a similar sound only it's a little more drawn out and sounds a bit like a whimper to me, that may just be my chins voice though, it's the only noise it ever makes so I can't be sure. It's always in the middle of the night, I just talk to it a bit and maybe get up from bed and pet it a bit or a treat and it will quit for the night, will do it all night if I don't get up though.
Well my chinchilla, Steve makes that noise too I think it's sneezing or something beacuse he only does it when he's behind the couch and its dusty back there so i think its sneezing.
I only have one=| I would like to have 1 more female as a mate for mushu but I'm afraid that I can't handle the amount of poo! *laff* Mushu loves biting the wallpaper all the time too and it's very difficult to get at him before he nibbles on the wall, so I cannot imagine chasing after 2 chins at the same time going in 2 different directions!
In case you are interested, I have just uploaded Malcolm making the same sound (though his voice is different) I have had other chins in the past, some make this sound much more than others.
it's always quiet where mushu is so I don't think it's something that he heard. I find chins funny cos of the many different sounds they make! Mushu greets me every morning when I wake up with a goo goo goo sound
My chin, Malcolm frequently makes this sound too, It usually means something has alarmed the chin, Malcolm does it when he has just woke up so I presume he has nightmares or he has heard something that we havent (I have never heard his cage mate Charlie ever make this sound - yet)
PHEW! I'm so glad I found your video. My boy, Watson, just started making these noises. I was so worried he was sick!

from the website I went to it says that this is a warning call or a call it makes when it hears a noise it finds strange.

I think this sound is supposed to be a calling sound; Mushu is probably calling you because he wants attention from you, or he needs something. =3

I realised that she gives a little burp before she makes this sound too, maybe she has hiccups or it's an after burp sound...hmm
