@mebematthew0 Portnoy didn't own Dream Theater. His father may have come up with the name, but the two remaining original all can easily claim "ownership" of the band. Portnoy may have done the most for Dream Theater, but it's not like the others just sat around waiting for Portnoy to do something.

Portnoy also tried to rejoin Dream Theater after he was kicked out of Avenged Sevenfold recently, but was refused. Dream Theater couldn't even tell him directly, they got their lawyer to tell him.

Neil Peart is probably the greatest drum player i have ever seen but he isnt the "The only one that can compete with him"...remember that before prog metal there was just prog (like rush), look for Carl Palmer (ELP), Pierre van der linden (focus) and so on... fusion and jazz are also great places to find great drummers. Metal and rock arent the only music out there ^^

I mean, it's understandable for the music that they have already written, but giving it a new playstyle might actually improve on the original DT formula for new music. A better evolution than what was, maybe? It might actually draw me back into DT. Really, the point of this post is to say that I am anticipating hearing DT with a new drummer more than anything I've heard from them since Metropolis pt2.

@TheCuddlyKnife I don't know, i mean there's no doubt Thomas Lang is great and could give Dream Theater a lot, i'm just a traditional DT fan, and also MP is my idol so of course I have a bias towards him. DT has never ceased to amaze me and I just prefer it with MP since he's had such an impact on them, like a horse without it's rider. I liked Metropolis pt. 2, but i'd have to say my most favorite would be Octavarium or Systematic Chaos, although if they do get a new drummer, i hope it is good.

@Raiderfan123 It'll seem like that for a while, and probably be more noticeable once they do make a new cd without MP, but I remember thinking the same thing when they got rid of their original keyboard player. The second guy wasn't too great IMO, but Rudess is the man. Maybe the next DT drummer will be Portnoy + 33% variety, and we'll hear some amazing things that may never would have been if MP was still in the band. It'll probably be their biggest seller yet based off of curiosity.

@Raiderfan123 Kevin Moore! That's his name. lol. And yeah, it was Rudess that did LTE. I was trying to think of Derrek(SP?) Sherinian from the albums A Change of Seasons and Falling Into Infinity, which I think has been the lowest point for DT. Hopefully DT won't pull that noise, when they got a player that simply wasn't on the same level(musically and mentally) as the rest of DT. It will make for good sales when Portnoy finally comes back to DT though, which he will.

@soc3pro Get good mics that can go into a recording device that can be mixed or that can plug into your computer and mix it from there with a mixer. Also, play along with headphones on, speakers will bleed through into the mics. And try to find a version of the song you're covering without the original drum part. Different camera angles help too.
