CATs rubber tracks are held on and operated only by friction and the tension of the track on the rear drive wheel. The big wheel creates a larger surface area for the track to grip as it goes around it.
Thanks, I didn't know that about rubber tracks. If teeth were used they could strip and ruin the entire track. But with friction that's probably why they come off as Black says. Is that why Deere has 4 smaller treads on their HSD? And why they don't skid steer but turn like a wheel?
idk about the Deeres, but the CaseIH quadtrac is a very similar design and instead of using just friction it does use a cog drive system like a dozer somewhat.

I see. The rubber needs more drive length on the wheel to keep from stripping out, right?

Why the big drive wheel instead of the high wheel like Cat's other dozers? what's the advantage?
