Yes, Nakul is totally misreresenting Bollywood. His choreography and costumes are not "Bollywood" at all. Bollywood dances are anything but technical. It's more about expressing yourself according to the music and lyrics. Nakul tries to give it a classical feel to it, which is COMPLETELY wrong and misleading. It's sad that SYTYCD doesn't realize this.

@starzangel89 they pick a style out of a hat, it's up to the choreographer to then create a routine that is in that style. if they put bollywood in the hat, it's not the producer's fault if the choreographer decided to create a dance that is more of a different style of dance.
Billy was so much better, he's loose and dancing with grace while Robert is stiff and his legs are too far apart. As an Indian, I feel Billy was having fun with it and quite convincing as a Bollywood dancer.
@naazdu I disagree. I felt that Robert was much better than Billy for much of the same reasons you didn't like him. It didn't look like Robert was having any less fun with it. Frankly he seemed more enthusiastic. I think if say Hrithik was asked to dance the same routine, he would do it much like Rob did.
India has many many traditional classical dance. Bharatnatyan, Kathan, Kathakalli, Gaudiya Nritya, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniyattam, Odissi, Sattriya etc. Each of this takes years and years to practice and master. But the Mumbai movie Industry (Bollywood) does not have time for such detail specialization. So they basically take a little bit of this and a little bit of that, and improvise. They even take from abroad, hip hop etc. Its does not make Bollywood any less serious. Its fun.
On top of Indian Classical dance India also has many folk dance styles like Bangra, Garba, Braj Bhoomi, Ghoomar, Kolattam:, RAAS, to name a few. Too many folk styles to mention them here. So Bollywood takes not only the Classical dance style of India, they also take Indian folk dance and improvise. Search for "Kajra Re" video on utube.
this is not really bollywood. but i loved the fact they were all in unison and that they were enjoying the dance. and there dance steps were pretty clean

One of the best Bollywood routines on the entire show(though there hasn't been much). Totally $hits on Jose's Bollywood routine earlier in the season where he got almost all the intricate hand and finger movements wrong, but the judges accepted, because it had "energy". Pfft.
also, robert diserved to be in the top three, he danced his ass off. billy couldnt even hld his stances in this number and robert nailed every dance he ever did. He was one of the most versatile male dancers on the show going from contemporary to hip hop to bollywood he just nailed each dance. except for quickstep...no one seems to get it quite right
i honestly believe billy is a post-op male transgener. everytime i hear him talk, its like a woman is speaking. not trying to make fun of him but its defanitely a possibility

I just want to mention that the Western world just generalizes all Indian styles of dancing as "Bollywood" - that's incorrect. Bollywood dancing is the type of dance you see in cinematic movies. This dance in particular is more Bharathanatyam than Bollywood dancing.
I don't expect the judges to differentiate between the styles of dance - but I figure if they're gonna showcase more Indian dances, they should at least recognize some of them as not being so "Bollywood".

@laurenpyaar The thing is that the kind of dances that they do in Bollywood are nothing like this. Most modern Bollywood dance sequences have nothing to do with any classical forms of dance. Folk is still a big part of the dancing but it doesn't have any of these intricate hand movements that they keep doing in SYTYCD. I hope the show gets rid of Nakul Mahajan and hires someone who really understands the concept.

I mean I love the fact that the show introduced it to an American audience, but they're simplifying the rich culture of dance in India by just mashing up various styles (mostly southern!!) and deeming it Bollywood. The combination of Persian dress and Bharathanatyam moves basically says: Oh well, it's all Indian anyway. Simplifying other cultures is convenient but dangerous!

looks dope, except, Billy just dropped into the ending pose, Robert shifted into it, smoothly.. although you can tell both were tired towards the middle of the dance, Billy was most noticeable..
have you seen a bollywood movie? they just shake their hips and do nothing...at least these guys used some REAL ancient indian styles. also they learned it in just a few days. Bharathnatyam dancers train for years!
I'll definately say... Robert was serious about it but it put alot a enthusiasm in it.. Billy had fun with it but also put enthusiasm it in! I think they both did a great job!

This looks like a classical TAMIL Dance mixed with modern moves. I would not call this Bollywood, it had more bharanatyium moves I would say. I LOVED IT!
if you see older movies, they will have a lot more classical and indian folk moves. The movies now have lots of hip-hop and latin dancing, so they cannot do those things. Nor can they just shake their hips and look pretty as many bollywood actors do today because this is an actual DANCE show.
quite frankly you cannot categorize anything as bollywood or anything not as bollywood because bollywood is just a mix of everything.
@BKillaCaliPhan Well, that's what Bollywood is, if you think about it. It incorporates Bhangra in movies like Dil Bole Hadippa, classical dance in movies like Devdas, and Hip hop and Jazz in most of the new movies and in older movies like Dil to Pagal Hai, etc.
When it comes down to it, bollywood is a film genre, not a dance style. Thus, bollywood dancing is the type of dancing which is featured in bollywood movies; all of the above are included.

looks dope, except, Billy just dropped into the ending pose, Robert shifted into it, smoothly.. although you can tell both were tired towards the middle of the dance, Billy was most noticeable..
great piece of choreography, though..

have you seen a bollywood movie? they just shake their hips and do nothing...at least these guys used some REAL ancient indian styles. also they learned it in just a few days. Bharathnatyam dancers train for years!

I'll definately say... Robert was serious about it but it put alot a enthusiasm in it.. Billy had fun with it but also put enthusiasm it in! I think they both did a great job!

This looks like a classical TAMIL Dance mixed with modern moves. I would not call this Bollywood, it had more bharanatyium moves I would say. I LOVED IT!

its not tamil dance its called Baratanatyyam. Its the oldest indian classical dance and it is tamil nadu dance.

if you see older movies, they will have a lot more classical and indian folk moves. The movies now have lots of hip-hop and latin dancing, so they cannot do those things. Nor can they just shake their hips and look pretty as many bollywood actors do today because this is an actual DANCE show.
quite frankly you cannot categorize anything as bollywood or anything not as bollywood because bollywood is just a mix of everything.

@BKillaCaliPhan Well, that's what Bollywood is, if you think about it. It incorporates Bhangra in movies like Dil Bole Hadippa, classical dance in movies like Devdas, and Hip hop and Jazz in most of the new movies and in older movies like Dil to Pagal Hai, etc.
When it comes down to it, bollywood is a film genre, not a dance style. Thus, bollywood dancing is the type of dancing which is featured in bollywood movies; all of the above are included.
