When this song was first released by the Ohio Express, I thought it was one of the worst pieces of crap extant and that nobody could redeem it. Seems I was wrong
@kinkysoybean Remember that this was at a time when Lulu, Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield had all had chart hits and some producer was looking to chart with Julie again, using a bubblegum song. When you consider that even Sinatra had tried to chart the same way (Sinatra recorded LOVE ME TENDER and The Beatles' "YESTERDAY and "SOMETHING") it's not so surprising that they tried to revive her career with a POS pop tune.
Wow. This is horrible. Sad when talent is relegated to singing covers of songs not suited to their styles. Anyone who thinks this sounds 'awesome' is blinded by fanaticism for the singer.
@PtolemyJones What a sad little person you are. There is a whole world out there of people who have a different musical tastes to your own. Unfortunately you seemingly come from a narrow minded little place that doesnt acknowledge that this world exists. Nevertheless we forgive you because you clearly dont know any different .
@leonaofficial I have no problem with people having other tastes in music. I do question people whose 'taste' is dominated by their self-identification as a fan. No performer can claim every performance was a success. Aretha Franklin is awesome, but her cover of Jumpin' Jack Flash is a tragedy.
If it makes me sad to know this performers better works, and realize that this was a mistake for her, then I will choose to be sad.
@canogymru That's more then fair, I just wish they had written her original songs that could take advantage of her talents. Singing a cover of a pop song, to me, that's as bad, or worse then being pigeonholed. Even though I loved the song, it's really just a bit of fluff, and she really deserves better.
@PtolemyJones Absolutely not. I'm not a massive fan of her at all but love this version, love the arrangement and the strings. Far better than the annoying original. It's different. Sexy even.
This was from an unfortunate period when record producers were forcing some crappy pop tunes onto top-notch artists---vocalists and instrumentalists alike. Then again, this has gone on since the beginning of recording itself. But Julie's sex appeal still comes through.
The lady was a hell of a big band singer when she was younger. Wish I had been young enough to hear her sing live when she travelled with the band. She made a very sucessful transition to film and TV. Too bad so many of the greats are gone now & all we have is rap, hippity-hop crap and so-called singers who look/act more like strippers in seedy bars.
YOU got to be KIDDING me! Its just not her style. But alot of artist of her generation were putting silly cover songs out at the time. Bing comes to mind with album "Hey Jude". I guess it was them staying HIP with the new generation.
1968 actually...Billboard ranked it #125 the w/e 11/23/68. I kinda liked it, actually. The same under-the-top treatment Feliciano gave "Light My Fire".
oh i forgot what, said?? i guess it has style of it's own,but i grew up to the happier version, i will rate it to make everyone happy i guess 5 stars baby!!
As much as I love Julie... how can anyone do this song without sounding pretty silly?
In her defense- not that she needs any- other performers did kitch/camp stuff once in a while, to update their images, and get out of a rut. But sometimes it's better to stay in a rut.
Hell yeah! and thank God, too, 'cause that Ohio Express version with guys in beatle-bangs and psychedelic clothes, singing in falsetto voices about "love in my tummy" was just too damn straight... Is EVERYone your age a homophobic moron? WTF
That's the way she sang the song, dummies. What...was she supposed to sing it exactly the way the original was sung??? This is HER take on it...and it sounds awesome.
There's some pretty moronic comments below. Figures....coming from the usual group of YouTube Fuckheads.
@88guilly88 I personally don't belong to any "YouTube Fuckheads" group... i'm 56 and I still think she used to sing this song like she was on pills...and I do remember those days... really ! Slow down 88...don't take it personally...people have all rights to say what they think, as long as it's a polite comment...don't you think so ? And, sorry, you are the one using impoliteness...not scrumsie !
@FRANCEBERNARDI oh, so because the song is sung in a slow, sensual - loungy presentation, London must be on pills? Nice assumption "Professor". And what research did you use to ASSUME this?
Here's a thought - mind your own business and go find some kids to yell at. Maybe the ones playing on your lawn. Or the ones selling pills down the street.
This is a really nice rendition of a cheesy pop standard. Quit trying to ruin it.
This is from her last/final album, if I recall correctly. Somehow this cover version is substantially more.... sultry.... than the hit it is based on.
