Sorry you feel that way podpit. I think that if you read the other comments on this topic you'll see that understanding is not as universal as you might think!
It took you three minutes to explain something that everyone above the age of 8 already knows.. I refuse to believe that some people really are dumb enough to not understand this by themselves.
I also wanna add that I shot my very first wedding the day my flash came. And an effective tool it can be. And despite that I didn't know what the heck I was doing, the pics came out beautiful, and the family was happy. I also did a maternity shot and I tried something TOTALLY unheard of to me at least. I had my bounce flash and aimed it toward the reflector (hoping that) the flash would ricochet to the object that I shot, and I wound up with the most vivid, clearest, image I've ever seen!
Helpful indeed. I recently bought a bounce flash and I'm still learning how to read the chart on it. although I've had some very successful shot after toying with it-including NOT using the diffuser on it, I might add-it still takes some getting used to. I'm glad that I stumbled upon your video. Short, and simple, but very educational to say the least.
blkguyjusttryn Thanks for your thoughts. The mirror certainly illustrates the point more dramatically than other less reflective surfaces. While you are correct that some light will be redirected forward, the bulk of the light will leave the bounce surface at the equal and opposite angle. Thanks for crediting me with it but I'm afraid it's not "my theory" it's a law of physics most often attributed to Descartes in the mid 1600's . Google "Angle of Incidence".
The only issue with his angle theory, is you're not talkn about boucing the flash off of a mirror. The card you use to bounce the light is not going to bounce it in a straight like like a mirror. So you can use a white card attached to the flash head, point the flash head at the ceiling the the card will still be illuminated and "reflect" light forward. HOW is that. The light coming out of the head, spreads immediately and hits the card enough to light your subject, with the head str8 up
i have a question, since the mounted flash is usually much higher than the subject's face, supposing the lens is in line with the subject's face, would that mean that if it stayed at a 45 deg angle, the flash would be reflected off the head or even higher than that of the subject?

some great points made in this video! Very easy to misunderstand the bounce angle, but something I and I expect many others have done. Cheers.
