Even for a baritone (I think Don has to be bass), Thomas Allen is one of my favourite Don Giovannis since he sounds as good as a bass does! Thank you for posting this!
Please, does anyone know where I can get this version on DVD???! I've been looking all over the internet for this performance, and can't find it anywhere! It's my favourite version and it's driving me crazy not being able to get hold of it anywhere :'( Please help, anyone!!
Does anyone know where I can find a DVD of this performance?? It's the best I've ever seen and I only have it on an old video that's starting to die! :'(
Te Kanawa was always a good Elvira but here she's really amazing. 10 years before, in the Losey film, she's bland & tame, missing the fiery temperament shown here. The role of Elvira is a prima donna, equal to Donna Anna. Elvira openly loves the Don and considers herself to be his outraged and betrayed wife. Her emotions are always running high - anger, indignation and grief. As if this was not enough, she has to be comedic as several scenes with her, the Don and Leporello indicate. Tough part!
I love that hat so much! Her costume is possibly the best one I've ever seen-- she looks like a painting by VanDyke. I'm not a big Kiri fan, but I do find her completely charming and sympathetic in this role. And she rocks that hat!
Kanawa & Allen are the best! love this! No wonder she´s in love with such a handsome man, he´s just such a jerk! Still can´t stop loving Allen, the MASTER!
beautiful in alll senses...Te Kanawa made a cute Elvira sounding perhaps only a litttttle bit too mild, too "soft" for the role (because of being such a full lyric soprano I guess ?). Nevertheless, it's wonderful!
Thanks for posting such a cool version of Don Giovanni =)
You're welcome. I agree that her Elvira is a bit too mild, but it may be just that I've been listening/watching Joyce DiDonato's Elvira a bit too much as of late. Fierce!
I've always liked the dramatic, intense and angry sounding Elvira of Maria Ewing on the EMI recording with Thomas Allen...that Elvira is a huge force of emotions but she's always so angry at the Don and I think this is the right way to sing Elvira...righteous anger....

opera = a play with actors singing their lines in an annoying vocal style to music written by a dead man.

That was an adorable Elvira! Love that costume. (never thought I'd ever describe Elvira as adorable, but Kiri makes her adorable)

She looks absolutely sweet and soft (and cute, even) here. But what a beautiful voice.

Donna Elvira - eternally scorned, but still so very much in love. Dame Kiri's interpretation of this role is just right. Thank you very much!

Elvira est sensée être folle de rage pas larmoyante.
isabelle070209 2 years ago
Pas vriament folle de rage puisqu'elle n'hésitera pas à se remettre avec lui. Elle hésite encore parce qu'elle l'aime encore bien qu'il l'ai trahi.
