OMG! What a fantastic voice! What happened to our music? Why are there no current songs like this? I am grieving the loss of this era. This is true artistry, none of that mediocre arrogant crap of today.
Soaring soulful vocals that simultaneously burn you and cool you. Bailey's voice ,,, smoothest falsetto EVER. Never missed em when they came to NYC. As someone else remarked, the whole band was off the chain. NEVER any STATIC at their concerts , you left feeling LIFTED, CHALLENGED, and ENCOURAGED. To my knowledge, Ive never EVER heard another MALE sing in "whistle voice" like Bailey. He also went on to make some beautiful music in the Contemporary Christian Inspirational Genre.
The person who was hitting those stratospheric notes back when this song was first recorded was a young lady named Jessica
Cleaves. She would later leave EWF to join The Friends of Distinction and later on was featured on the Parliment/Funkadelic classic "Not Just Knee Deep" with fellow outstanding vocalist Philippe Wynn. Rumor has it that her range was higher than Minnie Ripperton's...both ladies got there start in Chicago.
this is to KevFromHouston and octavine, you two have to be kids from a different generation. Because phillip Bailey was hittin them notes back in the 70s. 1976 to be exact, on the grattitude album, with the song reasons, live at the hollywood bowl. He imitated Don Myrick on rthe alto horn to the max!!! And if that was not hittin extra high notes, I shall say no more!!!!
Phillips was not hittin' notes like that back in the 70', 80's or early 90's. I wasn't until 1994 he started hittin' these extra extra high notes. True EW&F fans know what I'm talking about. If I'm wrong, please correct me.
Thank you so much for posting this Video! This song is wonderful, it is one of the things we have to teach our children, To Keep Their Heads To The Sky!!!! And no one can sing it like Earth, Wind, & Fire!
Please tell me how you got this clip.I have the VHS of this concert (Live By Request) but this song is definately not on there.Where did you find it? also phillip was hitting these notes in the 70's/80's. Listen to Mighty Might on the Open Our Eyes album/cd. He hits it hard. There used to be a clip on YOUTUBE called " old school funk" that had EWF back in 71 or 72 and Phillip was hitting those notes on "time is on your side". although i agree he must have been to a lessons coach in later years
This what you call music with soul. That covers feeling,it covers meaning and life in general. My wish is that some of these so call today singers would take notes from people like EW&F,Phyllis Hymen,Gladys Knight,Marvin Gaye,Sir Walter Jsckson,Sam Cooke and many other great ones.
Preach! Minnie Riperton, Chaka Khan, Labelle (the trio's harmonies - wooh!), Teena Marie, Prince...so many different windows into the human journey through music :) Mx
Back in the 70's,80's and early 90's Phillip was not hitting those extra high notes. Dont get me wrong, he was hitting high notes; but not like hes hitting them today.
