I meant his tip was almost the entire amount of the bill..minus drinks I think because we had free refills..So he got a 30 buck tip on a free meal! :)
I remember once I went to TGIF's for my bday and I had a gift card but guess what? The gift card was never activated at the store where my mom bought it at..So we told the manager what happened and he gave us the meal for free!!! We ended up leaving our waiter almost the entire amout of the meal because we felt so embarrassed..he was a happy man that night! but he did us right and gave us a free meal even if we had the cash to buy it.

I use to work on chillis waiting tables aswell and we had some freaking cupons 2x1 ( it didnt matters the number of the people , so it was 2x1 for table , even if it was a big fat ass table with 12 people on it , so if I had 12 people and they show the cupon the bill goes down to 50 % off ,wich it mean we will just charge for 6 meals .. so they just have to leave the 10 % of tip for 6 meals in the ticket, but I gave a fucking service for 12 meals? THATS BULL SHIT !!

I've never tipped by percentage of the bill. I try to tip reasonably considering time occupying the table and the service.

This happened all the time when I was a server. I've had to correct MANY MANY of my friends who do it, too.
It's a complicated system (try explaining tip to a foreigner, it's difficult) and people just aren't bright enough to figure it out by themselves.
