BMA: Impact of immigration changes on doctors

Agreement has been reached with the UK Borders Agency to enable individuals starting specialty training posts in August 2009 the opportunity to take up their posts under temporary arrangements within the Tier 2 immigration category. Discussions are taking place to agree a longer term solution for next's years specialty training intake.

I was wondering if the BMA has received any response back from the Immigration Minister and Health Secretary. I have read the letter that the Dr. Hamish sent to Alan Johnson, I was wondering have their been any changes what so ever to the future for me access post grad training in the UK.

The BMA is still awaiting responses to our recent correspondence to the Immigration Minister and Health Secretary and will continue to press for a change in the existing requirements for Tier 1 for doctors.

The Tier 1 rule changes are impacting a wide range of professions and seem to be a response to the current economic crisis and a move by the government to try and maximise job opportunities for British workers. However, the wider impact of the changes on professionals such as doctors who provide a vital public service do not appear to have been appropriately considered in raising the Tier 1 requirements.

I honestly don't understand the motive behind this change of rules. I'm intellectually equal to all the British medical students across the country, so why do I need a Master's degree to continue to train here?

I feel entirely duped. Britain has really let us down and by the looks of it, this won't be the last time.
