  • My dad showed my how to do this but u explain it better! Subscribed 2 u m8

  • Can you do a clutch for a passat b5 or b5.5 ...1999 to 2005 ... people with this car absolutely love their car, but at this point , as with mine, the clutch needs replacement , if you do a vid like , this you will have a huge, cult following, in the that car genre, ... to get things started i offer you my car for the vid, ... i can even assist you , if you need a gof-for on the back ground...

    thanks!

  • nice wall clock eric!lol

  • nice video mannn!!!

  • hello i have a 92 ford ranger and it wont start when i press the clutch but ran 10 min before, it drives and i have to start it with a screw driver the ignition works but i wanna think its the little plastic sensor on the pedal rod i might of kicked it but any advice or whatever is appreciated thanx

  • 25 minutes 20 seconds in did Eric get in the car with the inpact tool in his hand? WHY?! lol

  • I really want to convert my 2001 focus from automatic to manual

so I read a bit about it and I saw people recommend that I should get a wrecked focus and convert everything from it to mine

any tips btw? I'm a new driver and I just hate this for gear automatic gear box hehe

    I really want a manual one :)

  • There is literally no better instructor mechanic than you, Eric the Car Guy! Nothing on the internet compares to your articulation. Thanks for a great video! I own a 2000 Focus LX and will start clutch replacement soon!

  • Not a bad job mate,my only gripe is that you run the master cylinder dry when bleeding the clutch. Now as you will know the Ford Focus Hydraulic clutch master cylinder draws it fluid from the brake master cylinder reservoir,so if you run it dry you should have bled the brakes as air will or could have entered the system. Now you may have done that off camera if so no gripe. But when i trained as a mechanic i was told if a car doesn't start then it wont hurt anyone, but if it wont stop it kills.

  • 18;55 im just going to stick it in the slot and pump the pedal and see what happens

  • If this was the first Front Wheel Drive, Ford (or others) made, you could forgive them for many of the things that are so difficult to do here, but they have made 100,000s! A car will need about 3-4 clutches in a lifetime, so consideration is needed in the design and build for maintenance. You would think the clutch would last forever the way it is embedded in the vehicle.

Just a whine about the lack of auto-engineering from a maintenance perspective.

Your doing a great Job Eric - Thank You!

  • i hate doing major repairs when the car itself isnt taken car of(the engine on its last leg) i always tell the owner that there is something else that needs to be done probably before anything else. and by the way i like that clock in the way back at the beginning

  • Thumbs up ETCG. One of the things i must say youve taught me is,,,,,,,,,,, THE RUBBER GLOVES MAN!!!! thats genius i dont know how many mechanic gloves ive ruined due to exposure of oil and tranny fluid. its genius!

  • This is great. I don't have a focus, but I might buy the video for the integra timing belt in the future.

  • how long did this whole job take including filming and everything. from the moment u popped the hood till the test drive?

  • 28:35 is why you need a lift

  • Would it be easier to start with a gravity bleed of the clutch then attach everything else, instead of walking back and forth and pumping on the pedal? Just a thought.

  • Hey Eric, I don't have a 2002 focus but do have a 93 Ford Escort wagon and I am thinking its about time to change the Ole clutch. This video makes it look very doable. So I just purchased the full-length video..you gotta love the "try-before-you-buy" kinda format.. Good Job. in true ETCG fashion... Thanks again.

  • why do you use automatic transmission fluid on those bolts? Is it in place of anti seize? if so could you use it on things like brake bolts?

  • Eric- Thinking of getting a lift in the new garage? I emitted a slightly nervous "Holy-!" when you pulled the jack out from under the driver's side and the whole car wobbled on the jack which was on the pax side. Have a great new year holiday!

  • Mountain Dew!!!

    Great video mate.

  • so why didnt the motor sound healthy at the end?

  • he replied to me once, it was awesome :D:D

  • Thanks, enjoyed watching this great video series! Happy new Year!

  • Did it really smell that bad eric? :)

  • another great video Eric.

  • Is that Honda brake fluid being put into a Ford? Silly ETCG...

  • @Grimmcheesesammich Yea, it is. :)

  • Funny fact, the manual transmission uses far less oil than the automatic (just a funny thought)

  • @Airbeam Not when you consider that an automatic is controlled and operated by hydraulic pressure. I hope to do a detailed video on those at some point.

  • Eric, is there a reason the metal cap is only on one of the lower ball joints. You made such effort to put it in on one sight, but on the other side, you didn't place it. Did you forget or wasn't it there in the first place? Have you figured out yet what its for by any chance?

  • @dendorssers Yea it was missing from the beginning and to be honest I think it's just there to keep the parts from rusting together.

  • @EricTheCarGuy They are boot protectors to stop damage to the rubbers on the lower joints. Most aftermarket lower arms don't have these fitted to be fair and it would seem like it's had work done before on that side and the protector was left off.

  • i thought it was all over when it looked like it was gonna tip :P

  • personally I think gear oil smells horrible...

  • @Acuransx135 yes, that and coolant smell very bad!

  • I think these are the kind of videos people miss, where you get really deep into the parts of the car and do advanced stuff.

  • @WhammyMechanics I plan on making more of them because I really enjoy making them. Thanks for the comment.

  • Eric you are the man always good and informative videos ..keep it up & stay dirty

  • @roro560v8 Thank you!

  • Something fell of the bonnet when you first reversed.. hope it wasn't something important, lol.

  • @macspud28 I think it was just a piece of gunk because there didn't appear to be anything missing.

  • How many miles on that focus Eric ?

  • @SuuOnYaBike I think I showed that in part 1, I don't remember.

  • you're eric the car guy

  • Mr. Car GUY Thansk again For The AWESOME video.!!!!!

  • Why does not the engine sounds happy???

  • @Ebaytopseller Perhaps because it's had a hard life.

  • The car almost fell on you

  • @Ebaytopseller Perhaps but it didn't.

  • Hey Eric, Have you ever dropped your tools on the cameras? Do you have some sort of protection for them?

  • @wb2vsj No but I have dropped a camera or 2. I put wide angle lenses on them so I don't damage the actual camera lens if I drop one as they are a lot cheeper to replace than a camera is, they also offer a wider angle of view.

  • AND CHECK YOUR REVERSE LIGHTS WORK!!

  • @jazzy4me4eva 17:58 dumbass

  • @halosux4life dick breath i said make sure they work just because you plug them in doesnt meant they will still work

  • you are retarded ;) go fix your lawnmower you fucking hick

  • @EricTheCarGuy I am on a mobile device, I have no choice..

  • 28:37 gave me a scare like it was about to tip over and 28:42 sounds like a whale mating call lol

  • Good job Eric, i work on lots of fords, and they are not too bad,but for simplicity i love the 90s hondas, like you do:-) Happy Christmas man, and i hope you and your family have a really good 2012, best wishes from Ireland.

  • Ooops, forgot to say, have the chain close to the lower ball joint....

  • Here's a suggestion to prying down the lower control arm: Place a piece of sturdy chain over the top of the control arm and run a nut and bolt through under the control arm leaving some room to slide your prybar through. The slide your prybar through the chain and just rest the end against the the control arm and pry down. You get a lot more leverage tis way and is also a lot safer.

  • 28:34... car almost falls

  • Good series. I'd like to see the flywheel grinding demo. I'll be doing my Corolla clutch soon. I bought a green #50 bristle disc, #80 yellow & #120 white in case I need them. My clutch chatters going into 1st. I believe the input shaft bearing is loose causing it. I'm not looking forward to taking the trans apart & replacing it, but it has to be done. Thanks.

  • 13:05.... cream pie.. lololololl

  • What are the top 3 oil filter/oil brands you prefer to use? Would Castrol GTX oil & Mobil1 be good?

  • @thepowerfulnews I don't have a specific brand that I use I just preach changing them on a regular basis along with the oil.

  • @thepowerfulnews I believe Valvoline is probably the most purest motor oil out there.

  • bit of a knocking sound , like a bad joint maybe ? wen you roadtested the car , def not motor since it followed roadspeed , not rpm

  • @onsdag2k The rotors weren't bolted down when I did the 'test' is the reason for the noise.

  • The engine sounds bad because it is the base single cam focus engine which will kill itself before 100k. Either a blown gasket or they even drop valves which is worse lol. SHould have opted for the Zetec dual cam

  • @chorstma44 The engine didn't sound bad it was just the rotors loose on the hubs because I didn't have the wheels bolted on.

  • @EricTheCarGuy I meant while you were driving it on the road and you said it didnt sound healthy Lol! Great video though. I myself have a 2002 focus zx3 with a Zetec and a 5 speed in it. The clutch is still pretty good but when it goes I'll be buying your video lol. Have a happy new year man!

  • haha., they aren't that expensive. You should be able to afford them with all the work you do!

  • @redeckjuggalo Don't make assumptions about me, I hate that.

  • clutch disks tend to last longer if the surface of the flywheel is smooth, but if it is all beaten up, best to have it machined

  • @6speeddakota I've actually machined many a flywheel myself and to be honest I haven't noticed any difference between doing this and machining. That's not to say that you're wrong it's just been my experience.

  • I say all your viewers should get a pool of money together so you can get a lift for your new shop. I know I'd be more than willing because you've helped me on multiple occasions and I want to thank you for that....

  • @jdmfreak92 I appreciate that very much but I know in time I'll get one, for now I'd like to just get a new trans for my Odyssey so I can get my Element back from my wife. :)

  • @EricTheCarGuy Aw man. I'll see what I can do for you! I hope you had a happy holiday Eric. Stay dirty man! I want to show you a video of my car when I get it done for this summer. :)

  • @jdmfreak92 A lift would be nice but I like to see how to do things without one because that’s exactly how most people watching these videos will have to do it – and that’s one of the things I like about Eric’s site, he shows how a typical DIYer can work on their car. He’s not showing off how to do it using $50 grand worth of specialized equipment that nobody would have access to. I also like the fact that he doesn’t edit out the parts when things don’t go according to plan.

  • @JohnzCarz Touche

  • Like your new shop, missed the vid where you moved. When u gonna get a lift?

  • @mavue Thank you. When money and time allow would be my best answer to your question.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Funny thing about money and time...I always have time and never any money.I didn't watch the whole video, just skimmed it but read some comments. For what it's worth, you doing things right. There's many ways to do one thing, everyone has their own way.

  • I mean no disrespect as well, but why not use a torque wrench at all? I was also wondering why you allowed the car to go down so awkwardly when you were finalizing the job?

  • @BlazerLT That's where my experience comes in. I know my tools and how much torque they put out so in a way it's like I 'feel' my way through things sometimes. There are times when I will insist on using a torque wrench such as installing the pressure plate but for everything else on this job I stand by what I did. Thanks for your input.

  • @28:37 holy smokes, i thought the car would roll over lol

  • @wangbungal me too. it actually scared me.

  • That balljoint at 6:30 is shot and that clip is missing. Why not replace it while it is apart?

  • @BlazerLT This was my sister-in-laws car and lets just say she's 'financially challenged' much like the rest of us. Sometimes 'good enough' is good enough. Thanks for your input.

  • I have just bought Your movie not that I have a Ford but to support You ! I've watched all Your videos so it's like a few cents per movie !!! Keep up ! Greetings from Poland

  • @SzymekCRX Thank you very much for that and hello Poland!

  • I did a tiny bit of research on how much a job like this MIGHT cost, the clutch & gear fluid is about $210 (parts maybe cheeper where you are) and baised on the on how much my last clutch job cost on my '01 Ford Escort ZX-2 (the predsessor to the Focus) Your viewers will save a bare bones minimum of at least $600 in labor cost doing this job themselves. That's $600 smackers to go towards paying off all those holiday credit card charges. Thank you Eric for this freebie holiday video series.

  • @Michiganborn1969

Maybe, but then you have to deal with bolts that won't give, laying on your back for hours, possibly pinching a nerve (i got an entrapped ulnar nerve working on my acura), and you have to deal with the grime and unforseen challenges.. plus you need the tools.. a good jack and stands as well.. These vids are awesome, but they also show that this can be a very challenging job that requires constant problem-solving and hard physical labor

  • @RoberTastic

Yeah I bet, if you saw lasts fridays FATR Eric said his back was hurting & I was wondering if it was because of lifting that trans back into place on his back.

  • @Michiganborn1969

yeah? Well i would recommend stuart Mcgill's 'low back disorders' book.. you can see a video of him here watch?v=033ogPH6NNE . He is THE best expert on back pain in the world imho !

  • @Michiganborn1969 Sweet I never 'ran the numbers' but I love and appreciate that you did. Your input is always appreciated, thanks.

  • @ 1:06 there is a bracket that connects the crossmember to the engine, that bracket holds the oxygen sensor away from the exhaust and rack and pinion

  • @wangbungal Perhaps there WAS a bracket but it's not there anymore, thanks for the input.

  • The way you jack up the car to make it level is the best way at home to rotate your tires also, just a tip.

  • @Galley415 Cool, thanks for your input.

  • @Galley415 I never thought of jacking all four wheels at once to rotate tires. Here in Canada I do that twice per year for winter tires. Interesting idea, thanks for the input.

When I last had a vehicle up on all four, I did wonder about stability, since there is no wheel on the ground to slow lateral movement. But I guess you would say that with rotation you don't have to crawl under, so it's just worry about damage to the vehicle if it slumps sideways off all the jacks....

  • It surprises me how just stuck together the front end of a car is. No wonder there are so many issues with it.

  • @zhsy00001 Consider that they want to save time during the manufacturing process as well as cut down on the cost of the parts.

  • 04:45 No thats not smart. You should not drive the balljoint rod all the way up in the mounting hole. That rod has a groove that needs to align with the locking bolt hole. If not you risk to damage the treads on the locking bolt. ( thats a pro's experience )

Adjust the rod up until the groove is flush with the locking bolt hole or just gently push the locking bolt into the hole while adjusting the balljoint rod up into its hole.

  • @Formula400Pontiac what if the ball joint won't go in easily?

  • @north49gear You tap it with a hammer like Erik did, but NOT all the way inn. All the balljoints i have worked on will go a bit to further in and creating a misalignment for the locking bolt.

  • @Formula400Pontiac ... if you knock it all the way in til it stops.

  • @Formula400Pontiac Thanks for your input.

  • get a hoist man!

  • @redeckjuggalo Buy me one.

  • eric, you forgot to torque the lug nuts. I also noticed you forgot the torque stick on the impact gun.

Nothing personal, but it seemed un-ETCG-like.

    Happy Holidays

  • @ratdude747yt Perhaps but honestly my gun and compressor don't have enough power to cause problems there, I hear where you're coming from however, thanks for your input.

  • Have you done a timing belt on a focus before?

  • @turbobuick33 Nope.

  • If only i can reach in from my video end here and hold that ball joint for you lol.

  • @hp11208 Yea that would have been nice.

  • When you hit reverse for the first time to back out. A some parts fell out lol.

  • @JohnxWaynexGacy I guess I didn't need them.

  • how much does that bleeder cost?

  • @colston1990 Not sure try a google search.

  • what was wrong with the engine, why it sounds uhappy. I can't hear anything. just asking

  • @vankatalopen Actually I think you are hearing the rotors loose on the hubs because I didn't have the wheels on.

  • good way to warp those rotors by just running it down with an impact and not putting it to its correct torque... dont think u'd do that if u were doing a head gasket though...

  • @jdubb408

I believe the rotor is held on by the wheel/lug nuts, not the axle nut. The axle seats up against hub/bearing, someone correct if wrong. I'm surprised this car does not have a cotter pin, or any other safety clip to keep the axle nut from coming off.

  • "@jdubb408 I actually did a video on that once, look it up under "Torquing Wheels and Why it is Important". Experience has taught me however that my compressor and gun don't have enough power to warp them however. Thanks for your input.

  • @jdubb408

I misinterpreted your post sorry, you were talking about the wheels not the axle nut. I agree with Eric though, unless you have a pretty robust impact, you won't have a problem. Actually I have no idea how some people manage to damage lug nuts/bolts, or warp rotors. Excessive force and a lack of common sense?

  • My Internet really hates your videos for some reason...

  • @hamza3608 does yours keep partially loading too?

  • @hamza3608 Try taking it off of HD and see if it plays better.

  • theres no abs ring on the axle??

  • @foxdmulder I guess not, honestly I don't remember.

  • That engine sounds a little sick. I think I hear another video coming to investigate that, hopefully.

  • @spelunkerd Perhaps but I'm just glad it moves now. Thanks for the comment.

  • 4:40....Thats what she said

  • erick whats up with the black eye lol

  • Once again, Eric. I like how you include the tricky spots where on the first try you didn't achieve what you were trying to do. So many instructional guides make some procedures seem deceptively easier than they might be,

  • @spelunkerd Most of those are written by people that don't do this for a living I think.

  • did you purposely put the tires under the car like that? i do the same thing "just in case" when its jacked up. i found that many people dont. i mean why not, there just sitting there anyway why not make a quick possible life saver out of them.

  • @skaterboy520c Yea I do try to cover my butt when I can. Thanks for the comment.

  • "Im Eric The Car Guy... and this is my job" yea you are kinda the Mike Rowe of Autos. Good Video!

  • @dosman01302 It is a good job though. :)

  • You didn't put that heat/dust-shield thing in for the ball-joint on the right side :(

  • @GolfVariantCL They're useless. Very few mechanics in the world will put that stuff back on.

  • @GolfVariantCL It was never there to begin with.

  • No wonder clutch replacements cost so much, they seem like a job from hell. One question I have is about the rubber gloves - what type are they as the disposable thin ones I used got oil on them and seemed to degrade within minutes. I was only changing oil. I'm still amazed that not one main dealership I have been to over the years has ever changed gearbox oil. I agree that engines and gearboxes love fresh oil.

  • @urbex2007 Honestly clutches aren't that bad in my opinion as it's really just parts replacement, I guess the more you do the more you get used to it. I use Diamond Grip gloves and have for years. Gearbox oil doesn't need to be changed like engine oil does but about every 30-50K should be good but check the owners manual for your application.

  • Very Helpful video Eric,

Thank you for all your efforts ! :)

  • Update: At 28:36 I about had a panic attack. Eric don't scare me like that :(

  • @chevykicksass505

Holy crap you aren't kidding. I felt myself jump in my seat. Don't do that man! ><

  • @chevykicksass505 I was thinking the samething what in the world is he doing, thought for a second it was going to roll :o.

  • Comment removed

  • @chevykicksass505 Sorry, didn't mean to frighten you.

  • engine really doesnt sounds good, But great work eric !

  • @sharky322 Yea this car did have it's problems but first we had to get it moving. Thanks for the comment.

  • Yes I hope you had a great Christmas as well ! This video was a nice present for all us fans, thank you.

  • @chevykicksass505 Hope you had a good one too. This 'format' really seemed to work so perhaps I'll be doing more of these in the future, thanks for your comment.

  • Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Eric you and your family !!!

  • @BeReady Same to you!
