youre videos are great i love exotic pets and im happy you support a good cause! what you say is true the wild is a harsh environment and if youre tamandua couldnt survive out there im glad you took her in : )
I think this video is great. I think having a "pet" anteater is even greater. Having ANY animal (or insect) as a pet is just fine so long as you can care for it properly. In fact, a lot of animals like this anteater are better off having someone take care of them than they are in the wild!
I encourage everybody here to stop responding to happyninslave's comments. The user is clearly a troll and cannot be reasoned with.
@happyninslave She is on a leash for the same reason as dogs. so she wont get into trouble, hurt or killed. Does your pet bird get to fly free outside?
This is clearly not a bird, tiger, monkey or any other wild animal that can be domesticated. It's a frigging ant eater, who has one of those? You are a sick person who wants to make money, why else would you post it on youtube?
I keep ten anteaters in my basement. I let them out once a month for some fresh air. My friends and I like to throw fruit at them. When it hits them in the head they get scared. I think after they grow a little fatter I'll have a barbeque with them. I hear they taste like chicken. >=)
An anteater is a slow animal with the potential of domestication for having a calm nature and overall nice personality.
I'm sorry that your so ignorant, but I guess that comes from not knowing anything about animals other then what you see on television or hear about in school.
No. We have been trying for almost 6 months to get Pua a make and it took over a year to get Pua. They are very hard to get in the US.
I have a recipe I worked on based on zoo diets and designed to match the nutrients of their wild diet that is beef based. They have a lot of special considerations to their diet like needing a lot of vitamin K.
A friend of mine is doing a investigation about anteaters and he says anteaters don't spend more than 30 seconds eating in the same place because the red ants come and bite them on the trunk, which then swell up and they end up stuck in the ant hole.
They don't spend long and that is attributed to not liking the soldier/stinging ants but it has nothing to do with the nose swelling up, which it doesn't.
Pua likes the eggs and baby ants best and eats those and moves on even with lots of ants still there who don't seem to be fighting. She at least is just picky.
How beautiful they are too, so cute! *Sigh* I wish I could take care of one, but I don't think I'd be able to find places for them to walk around.
How agressive are they? Are they affectionate? What is yours general behavior? They seem nice, but with claws like that (although I understand why they have them) they look as if wild ones could be dangerous if approached.
Take care, you're very lucky to have such a fine creature :D
Since you have so many questions I added our FAQ to the video description which should help with most of them.
A wild one could hurt you but they rely on self defense. The hiss and show their claws to warn you off but if you still mess with them then they will strike with their claws.
Color and style wise or the fact it is keeping her from from running off into the woods to die? I wish more people believed in leashes. I worry some idiots dog will kill Pua.
I'd have to practice and become a quick draw to deal be sure I could deal with a loose dog in time. I've been alert enough to pick her up in time when a dog comes so far.
it would be super cool to have a pet anteater!!! I wasn't saying that a treat now and then is bad, that is totally understandable. i sometimes give my dog some goodies like bacon fat : )
I've worked very hard to get her diet to line in nutrients to the analysis of the stomach contents of wild tamanduas. It's sad you don't agree with letting pets have treats sometimes. Cheese provides some retinol they only need a small amount compaired to other mammals so she only get retinol by her treats. The wine is fruit juice, she only get a little, fruit juice is the only sugar she gets and it's just natural sugars from the juice. That is explained in the video descriptions.
In terms of diet we tend to be a bit overbearing with our animals. There's a lot of things they can metabolize that aren't expressly healthy. In small treat amounts, unless you're feeding outright toxic substances, you're usually alright. I've known birds that get M&Ms for treats.
This isn't to say that you shouldn't try to feed a good diet, but there's no need to be overly strict about it either. And even if you are, they're going to forage and get hold of things they shouldn't have anyway.
she's a lesser anteater yes?

@ThornUvDaath777 They are mostly nocturnal but will get up when it suits them. Pua is willing to wake up for a hike in the woods because it's fun.
