Mayer is weak boring shit. 3 min? are you kidding me? take it somewhere dude. check out Scofield's Cissy Strut. or Steve Kimock. both are 1000x better than this nonsense.
@randeezydizzle I didn't say that in my post did I? I know that there are plenty of other good guitarists out there thats why I didn't point out any names. I just said he does what 5 other guitarists can't do. Lol. I love you man. xD
@randeezydizzle Lol, what I am saying is that I know that there are plenty of other good guitarists out there and John mayer is one of them. He may not be the best but he can do as I say. He can play what 5 guitarists can't play put together but that certainly doesn't mean that there aren't other guitarists who can do the same or better. :)
@pattyhillo I would say he was introducing great music to a younger generation who have never heard of it. I wouldn't be a meters fan if I hadn't have heard Mayer cover it. I'm 19. If you want the funk tradition to continue this is the best chance its got to be instilled into young people: Mayer may or may not suck at it, but that is irrelevant: its the inspiration to young kids to get into funk/soul/blues music is the point. Like it or not, he is one of the last bastions of great music.
@pattyhillo...I give him much love and props because as big as Chris Brown is, all he can do is imitate MJ. For a white dude to pick a song by the Meters says more for him than many others.
I don't know if anybody else posted this, but he is playing the song wrong. It is a major sixth at the end of the riff. It is not the minor seventh that he is playing.
@SoftRune Actually, he makes the same mistake that 99 plus percent of people make when covering this song. Before you make stupid comments like saying that his version is unique, maybe you should consider the fact that he, like most people, probably heard it wrong.
@BluesShredGuru A cover doesn't mean that you'll have to play it exactly like the original. Instead he makes his own versions. Look at all his other covers..
@SoftRune I understand that, trust me. I have seen this mistake done by a hundred different acts though, and that's why I assume that he did it as a mistake as well. When I first learned this song, I made the mistake too. If he was trying to make it unique, I think he would have made it MORE unique. I can't see why he would make it sound almost the same but change one note that everybody plays wrong, to be unique.
@epiclife247 yeah, using the 7th (minor pentatonic) is much more contemporary than the major 6th (major pent borrowing) i agree entirely.
@juliabren2 thats fair enough, but could you give your reasons why? I'm thinking of doing a cover of Cissy Strut in my own way as a drummer in a funk band and I wanna know what pitfalls this fell into. To my ears its funky as? help! thanks!
I don't get why all these idiots are hating on him...i think John Mayer's pretty good...anyone who plays guitar or even any instrument...or has a taste for good music knows that John Mayer is a good guitarist...heyyy, maybe thats why, all these people are hating on him, they don't know shit about music, thats why they say he's a bad musician...either that or they're just sooooo jealous of him.
@alienindacloset I wasn't hating on John Mayer, I was hating on the douche in the "top ranked comments" who seems to be listening to John Mayer solely because he has expensive equipment. @tystratocaster - ah... I must have been misinformed. Someone told me that SRV LIVED with his guitar, carrying it around with him to do dishes and such, before he became famous.
Haha reading the comments on this video is cracking me up and actually worth the time. Can't deny that this doesn't quite live up to the original though...
@mmMASHPOWER No way man, I love LOVE the meters but this is just killing. He really has the funk. Its so tight, a little stevie, a little bootsy, a little Jimi melted together with a splash of something new.
Mayer is too egotistical in this genre to really do justice to this great Meter's song. He doesn't have their humor. It's obvious he missed all the Meter's funk, roots, etc. No New Orleans celebration with this BS.
@rockerdude29 nah dude mayer has one of the few remaining dumble overdrive pro's. pretty much the best amp there is for a nice strat tone. lucky bastard.
@jamieakabear2316 you aint kidding.A $7000 custom shop black1 strat,an EVH $25,000 CS franken strat,$11,000 SRV lenny strat,$10 mill worth of vintage watches and he can get any girl he wants haha.I think the only reason anyone has to hate on him is jealousy.
@rockerdude29 If you can't improve on an original, don't play it on camera. The Meters did it better than anyone could possibly do it in a modern setting. Nothing unique here. @properbeatz whine whine, bitch bitch. If you really were a music lover (instead of a critic) you would appreciate that a POP artist is doing his darndest to keep some classic music alive. People like you bitch when all they hear is Justin Beiber and Lady Gaga playing bubble gum pop and dance and a well rounded player like John gives us a taste of the old days and you still bitch. How many records have you sold again? Maybe you've heard a more creative version. Could you do better, though?
@DylanGalvinMusic Haha! You're funny. And ignorant. Not to mention lame and ineloquent, pretentious, and a comment hog. Yes in fact I have heard better versions. I live in New Orleans so I can shit a better version than this. Do you know the best way to keep classics alive? Donate money to the musicians village in N.O. How about funding a documentary or building a funk museum (even though it couldn't be contained =D)? I wouldn't question your love of music so why would you question mine?
@DylanGalvinMusic I wouldn't normally say this, but I felt very embarrassed for you. "The moon shines off her chocolate hair!?!?" Are you serious? I'm all for creativity but that was.... terrible. And the obviously conceded "About Me" is rather a turn off. I was hoping that I would at least find your music tolerable, but after hearing that first I almost felt bad about writing my previous comment as I was convinced I had ribbed on a 15 y/o special needs child.
@properbeatz Wow. Personal attacks, love it. Uploads of yourself playing = 0. You don't like my music, thats cool, everyone has an opinion, but you're just another critic with nothing to show. Since you live in N.O. (and that apparently gives you innate music ability) you should nut up and give us all a vid of you personally doing something. I'd say that's probably not going to happen since being so critical is usually is a giveaway for inability. I also hope you're much younger than 38.
@jamieakabear2316 he's not playing a dumble in this video, its a two rock. and i think its his signature two rock but i cant be too sure. the tweed "amp" on top is a fender reverb unit.
saw "Red" last night....and LOVED that this song was in it!! I'm from New Orleans, so the song was very familiar, and The Meters, the group that originally did the song, are credited with founding "funk" music....Great band!!

Steve Jordan makes this song sexy man...go see the movie "RED" with Bruce Willis, the opening scene for when they go 2 Chicago at the end of the movie has a sexy version of "cissy strut" ull love it!
this mangina is terrible. the real meters is the only way you can strut off the meter. even a bitch struts more tough than that, soft ass white bread needle dick. you're a lousy musician john mayer. the guy on youtube who does U2 covers with the eventide delay is better than you.
@01Craigyboy SRV? You must mean super raggady vagina. He is NOWHERE in the same UNIVERSE as Stevie Ray Vaughn. And even he's a bum by my standards. You are gay.
@wmcglinchey I'd say somebody needs a diaper change. See that little "x" in the top right of your screen (or left if you are on a mac)? Go ahead and click it, your problem is solved. No need to belittle somebody for musical taste, if you like it thats great, if you don't like it there are 25 Million other music videos to watch. Happy listening.
i respect this guy , i respect anyone who can earn more than 50,000 a year and make a lifestyle around music, i dont give a shait how they do it but i show respect , mayer is a good musician, you dont see jazz artists getting stadiums packed,(maybe a some on the radar but the undergriund?) but you know what, if you dont like the guy , its cuz you are a hater , i dont judge the guy, just look and you decide
@CheezeyWeezey i didn't question his qualification in drumming. it's only about the kit he's using. for me, it's sounding too hollow.. and has too much reverb on it. spacey ;)
@bjhMus1C i didn't question his qualification in drumming. it's only about the kit he's using. for me, it's sounding too hollow.. and has too much reverb on it.
John Mayer is Gifted, he even know the "Meters" Out of New Orleans, la. the wrote thisisong...Cissy shrut, and band consist of Art and Arron , and Zig a Boo Neville, it good to here again...
@zoelynnkendrick The band consisted of Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeleste, Leo Nocentelli, George Porter and Art Neville... no Aaron or any other spelling of the name ( Cyril Neville joined on percussion and vocals later). And it was way funkier than this.
@chochemerlyn thank you so much for your comment, you certainly know the band, it's been a long time since I have seen any of them in person, i saw Art on a documentary on PBS about a year ago...again thanks for the info...

@jamieakabear2316 he's not playing a dumble in this video, its a two rock. and i think its his signature two rock but i cant be too sure. the tweed "amp" on top is a fender reverb unit.

is this guy ever going to have his own thing?....John Mayer...needs his own sound drastically...
Ardolino21 1 year ago
@Ardolino21 just because he tries different things means that he doesn't have his own sound?? don't even act like you know what you're talking about.

saw "Red" last night....and LOVED that this song was in it!!

01Craigyboy 1 year ago
@01Craigyboy SRV? You must mean super raggady vagina. He is NOWHERE in the same UNIVERSE as Stevie Ray Vaughn. And even he's a bum by my standards. You are gay.
wmcglinchey 1 year ago

@humislair What are you talking about?! That's Steve Jordan! He's one of the funkiest!
CheezeyWeezey 1 year ago
@CheezeyWeezey i didn't question his qualification in drumming. it's only about the kit he's using. for me, it's sounding too hollow.. and has too much reverb on it. spacey ;)
humislair 1 year ago
@humislair how the hell is he failing?? Steve Jordan is the definition of groove.. could you be anymore ignorant?

John Mayer is Gifted, he even know the "Meters" Out of New Orleans, la. the wrote thisisong...Cissy shrut, and band consist of Art and Arron , and Zig a Boo Neville, it good to here again...
zoelynnkendrick 1 year ago
@zoelynnkendrick The band consisted of Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeleste, Leo Nocentelli, George Porter and Art Neville... no Aaron or any other spelling of the name ( Cyril Neville joined on percussion and vocals later). And it was way funkier than this.
chochemerlyn 1 year ago
@chochemerlyn thank you so much for your comment, you certainly know the band, it's been a long time since I have seen any of them in person, i saw Art on a documentary on PBS about a year ago...again thanks for the info...
