Collin's ultimate goal was a united Ireland...If he had lived he would have been Ireland's leader. Churchill was desperate to use Ireland in the war for the strategic geographical advantage it could have offered. Collins would have accepted his offer, or prehaps even made the offer himself. If the loyalists had rebelled against becoming part of the republic they would have done so without a country behind them and easily have been overcome. Perhaps they would be offered land in Britain.
