V8 - american V8s are big loud and very wasteful - and quite old tech - 2 valves per cylinder, push rod etc.

VTEC can get a lot of BHP per litre (about 100 on a civic type R, a lot for a naturally aspirated car) and will have 4v per cylinder but as the V8 is larger in terms of displacement it will be quicker. The new Charger SRT8 develops less than 70bhp/per litre which is pitiful, especially when the germans can make 110 bhp/litre (RS5).

You really underestimate 4 cylinders. There are tons of NA 4 cylinders that can beat cobras. A k20 in a EG/EK civic averages 13's in the quarter mile stock. If it's built for high compression with upgraded valvetrain then it's gonna smoke em.
