  • Come on, Cedric had to be on something. They still had Jeremy at this point, that means they were all still using hard drugs. Opiates, coke, uppers, downers, and whatever else. I'm guessing Cedric had a few of those in his system.

  • Man, Cedric definitely looks messed up in that interview.

  • me enamoré de la bajista <3

  • listen, cedric's voice is fine for what he wants...thats like criticising the mars volta for having songs that r too long. later, especially after quitting hard drugs, cedric's tastes changed and his performances are "better." he's not singing "bad" cuz he's a horrible singer, that's his taste, that's his style, its what he wants, he and omar are most influenced by punk rock. FUCK, have any of u EVER heard the germs? the 80s-90s LA punk rock scene had no real notes sung at all.

  • @canthinkverywell you get a thumbs up from name dropping The Germs.

  • God, sometimes i forget how much better Jon Theodore was than Thomas Pridgen.

  • he obviously blew out his voice prior to this show. The show must go on when you're touring however.

  • Easily the worst performance I've seen of this song. I really enjoy TMV but this was brutal. Energy on stage is fantastic but when you put more effort into twitching around and swinging the mic then you're losing sight of what matters most and that's the music. I've seen bands tear it up on stage and others just sit there and play. In both cases, if the music sounds great, I love the show. Cedric does have a tendency to get lost in theatrics and this is good example of that.

  • omar has a serious case of the wiggles...

  • Heroin.

  • It's very good hermano.

  • Haha compared to the Live at Electric Ballroom video he sounds perfectly in tune here.

  • I got the DVD for this, but the quality isn't very much better except for the visual quality. If anyone has a link to this same performance with better sound quality, let me know and I'll be your psychic best friend lol

  • I love TMS, but I'd feel ripped off paying to watch this expecting to see at least, something record-worthy.

They rock, like HELl but there's a limit to everything. Let's show some respect for the fans.... it's like Chan Marshall on her earlier years... gladly she's way over those times, and I hope the same goes for TMS cuz I wanna see them live eventually.

  • @thedeadserv I love TMS or TMV too,ha. But seriously the energy they emanate combined with the fact that the song retains it's amazing groove, is far more important for me than said vocalist's performance on this night.

  • @1Muzition1 exactly. thank you!

  • No he didn't hit the notes, but the energy given makes up for it. This is what... '02? Maybe? I dunno when it could be but whatever. I hadn't seen Volta till '08, still a LOT of energy but not as much. He traded in some of the energy for sounding better. Still an awesome performance even with him killing the vocals ha. Perhaps he is just extremely high or something.

  • Its not about hitting all the notes perfectly. Its about feeling the music. If you don't get that then you'll never get THEM. So to all you music Nazis out there, please fuck off and die.

  • It's a bad performance people. Look at their other live performances..This looks like them still shacking off At The Drive In habits. ATDI is amazing, don't get me wrong, but the live performances there don't really fit the live performances TMV is known for now. Cedric is still crazy, but it's coupled with a refinement to his vocals.

  • 2:27

    AWSOME!!!!!!!!

  • my ears ._.

  • cedric is in another galaaaxeyyy

  • thank god they replaced that chick with juan. juan alderete in the fucking man. this woman is just really really lame

  • thank god they replaced that chick with juan. juan alderete in the fucking man. this woman is just really really lame

  • fucking amazing intro

  • they're obviously high as FUCK

  • ofc everyone has ears and listens to his vocals.but u missing the real point here.he doesnt care about hitting notes,he just wants to do wat his music tells him.and if u now cedric from atdi till now.u'll understand...music from the heart.

  • @jonnnaaass thats complete bullshit

  • well then.but obviously u dont understand this band.move on

  • you do, dude, you do !

  • shit yes man i do,'cause i freaking love this band.but if u have a good reason to tell me its bullshit, please enlighten me

  • Its so blasphemic to say you understand them.

    No one does.

Really no one. I think they dont even know it for themselves.

They just do, and they surely enjoy it, you can see that.

But dont pretend to understand it.

I dont know if you're a musician or not, but IF than you should understand what I'm talking bout.

  • ur talking about their music.i'm talking about their feeling, what moves them.and that was the point of this conversation.its a live PERFORMANCE.sorry caps but its whats it is.they dont give a crap to festivals and that shit.i grew up listening to atdi.i've seen this loooaaads of times.and yes ur right,no one can really understand them, and that's the beauty of this band.but in the non-sense,misterious,wtf lyrics of cedric,i always feel i can understand something.ty for the awesome chat (:

  • so you enjoy it for yourself, and feel it for yourself.

this kind of connection is awesome, i knwo what oyu mean. i dont feel this in connection with tmw but well, ...

    I can just say:

pick up an instrument and play something, do something.

    its awesome :D

  • thats bull music is all about expression obviously but without the technical ability that is needed its only enjoyable for the performer, he needs to think about the audience because i'm sorry, much as i love mars volta, they aren't very consistent live.

  • haha what? no. it's easy as that: any vocalist can't hit the notes when he's nervous or tired, it's not an improvisation or 'music from the heart', just a bad day for a singer

  • what about that days that you dont really give a fuck?;)

  • you GIVE a fuck when you're on stage

  • u should ask them then.maybe you're wrong.dunno

  • All you people downrating others for criticizing Cedrics' live performance... LOL at you... Are you not listening?

(In this video at least) he barely hits one note.

I am sure Cedric himself realizes this.

That said, his performance has improved massively of late.... and best of luck to him to continue in that stead.

Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE TMV,

    but lets be honest here.

  • don't know what to say about the vocals... :S

  • Jon: how do i look btw?

    Cedric: you look good...

    Jon: you look good too

    Cedric: thx...

    Jon: ok...

    LOL???? sooo..awkward??

  • idk why everyone says his voice is awful, i enjoy it, he still uses the punk vocals.

  • I love this performance, sounds like cedric still has his ATDI vocals. Great Song!

  • hes so much better now, do not fear.

  • I don't go to shows to hear the album, I go to shows for a totally different experience. this is one of the most energetic and intense performances I've ever seen, and it's fucking amazing for that.

  • @WillyPlaidPants if people wanna hear note for note they might as well tape a picture of the band to a wall and stare it while they blast their CD on the stereo.

  • Sick

  • when was this?

  • who is gonna tell you that stupid jerk

  • How about you calm down?

  • Comment removed

  • 02 i think. maybe 01.

  • I guess 2001

  • wtf

  • Oh, and i like that about them.

  • The Mars Volta dont seem to care as much about accuracy as they do energy when they play live. Especially now a days. Its signature for them.

  • haha GIVE ME MY MONEY FOR THE TICKET !!! at the drive in FTW !

  • ... OMG ... Such a bad voice performance...

  • why is everyone hating???? All u cock suckers will never be able to duplicate what this guys have done. Jealous N envy haters.

  • Nobody is hating, it's just a fact. This isn't a good live performance of the song in comparison with the studio recording. Do you really think the vocals in this performance are as good?

  • Look The Mars Volta is a powerful n magical band. How can u compare a Live sound to STUDIO sound. Please dont be STUPID! Youre in a Studio, they have the BEST equipment to make u HOT. So of course ur going to sound better when u record in a studio, thats the whole point of studio recording.

  • You're talking to me as if I don't like Mars Volta. I do. I just happen to think this isn't a good vocal performance. Nothing wrong with saying that. It's certainly not unjustified, it's pretty obvious why I think that. Of course you can compare live to stuido. I've seen many bands who were far more incredible live than on the cd. Also bands that can sound exactly the recording. Why have you capitalised those particular words?

  • i like it still, even though it's bad sounding to most ears. also im not the guy you were agrueing with before. lol

  • I know! I would never argue with a chilli's fan=] Got 2 rhcp stars on my wrists , woop woop!

Nout wrong with liking the video. I just wish the vocal part was more like the studio recording instead of just making noise into the mic...

  • lol. nice! i really want one of them on my wrist. i totally see where you're coming from, but there's something about the chaos that really makes me like the vid. but i love the studio version too.

  • Comment removed

  • They seem good enough but I've already said everything I can. I just think the vocals in this performance are pretty bad. I havn't seen any other other mars volta live vids so It's strictly this video and these vocals. Muse are a brilliant live band although they fucking sell out too fast for me to get a chance to clarify that!

  • You have to remember that at this time they were fucked up on every drug you could think of

  • Thats no excuse! If drugs make you perform badly then they can wait 'till after the show=p

  • LOL I guess you've gotta point there. I think they were that deep into the drugs that they didn't really care what exactly they were doing! If I'm not mistaken, I think Omar was experimenting with crack at this point!

  • Fair enough then, they were binted out their trees. Ye canny whack crack! =p

  • thats what i had to remind myself when i saw this.

  • This is the single worst live performance ever. He couldn't reproduce his cd quality in ATDI and he still can't do it with TMV... But the albums are great recorded. Completely amateur and off when live.

  • its the drugs man.. he can control his voice a lot better these days!

  • cedric's a bit more ATDI in this vid

  • it's sounds strange, cause he doesn't sing "now i'm lost", but "NOOOOOOOW". now they are better ^^

  • Who's that girl? Eva?

  • haha that was pretty bad.

  • jesus if its that easy you dont have t give a hoot about musical ability and just be "punk" in energy, i guess freddie mercury and thom yorke are out of a job!

  • thank god cedric stopped taking so many drugs, he's sounds like shit here.

  • he did? oh thank GOD

  • this must have been right after at the drive in broke up

  • The Mars Volta ROCKSSS!!

  • ahah the start reminds me of something from the 80s tv show ahaha that was a good laugh :)

    sweetness is what volta brings

  • when was this?

  • Wow, i think it's pretty safe to say that Cedric's voice has improved since then...

  • Does anyone remember a you tube user called "hapi theory"?

  • This is like 2 years before the album came out.

  • They are hella fucked up on who knows what. AWESOME.

  • And when I say they don't sound like the album, it's definitely a good thing!!! This band is so amazing!

  • 3:24

    J. Ward having technical difficulties with the vocal overlays?

    Red Toes ftw

  • omg...i really hope they're drunk...or the quality's bad...cuz...I'm sorely disappointed with the mars right now.

  • that was the best interview I've ever seen

  • rifaan :D

  • Seriously, almost all of you guys are doing the "I'm a fanboy who wants to like a band no matter what" deal, where he (in like EVERY video) sucks at singing and you guys make a bunch of ridiculous excuses.

Any and every band should be able to perform their shit live, there's no "well, the drums were good, or the keys" like they are trying to cover some complex piece or something... THEY WROTE IT!

  • So fucking what, TMV/ATD-I are/were bands who lived by the philosophy of trying to make your live show more interesting. If you want to hear the cd, go listen to it...

  • Have you listened to the album? I'm assuming not based off your answer, mainly because the songs on the albums are so complex/complicated as far as syn keyboards, layout of guitar, pretty much everything. Impossible to replicate live. Bands have good nights, and off nights. The Mars Volta will sound nothing like the albums when you see them live, you just have to get use to the improvisation.

  • Its not going to matter what you say on here that will make ppl agree with you, their fans so they will arue. Start leaving comments like this on a general music site and you may get a lot of sympathy. Fan boys always have the bands cock in their mouth. Hence the sucking is part of the act.

  • those last lines were pretty smooth man. haha

  • jippylegs, you rule!

  • that really is a good statement... seeing that youtube has almost made me hate nirvana fans

  • sometimes its about he passion and not perfection... they're a god damned punk band you're expecting too much...

  • dude Mars Volta are about as punk as Lawrence Welk is death metal. Calling Mars Dorka punk is the stupidest thing I have heard all week! I forgive your 'tardness though because you are probably just a young misinformed music fan. cheers

  • I don't mean punk in sound I mean punk in attitude and the energy their music puts forth... I am a musician myself and consider punk to be anything that proclaims your musical freedom to the masses... and I'm 23 going on 24 not too young

  • its all goody in tha hoody!

  • punk91, you have some pretty useless opinions for a 23 going on 24 year old. if you think that freedom to the masses was brought on by punk hahahaha. even musical freedom to the masses! if that makes someone punk, ray charles made punk music in his day. do me a favor, buddy, read self-reliance by ralph waldo emerson. punk is just another genre of music, that the mars volta is not. individualism and punk are two different things.

  • He was parodying another comment. Al Di Meola is banality embodied.

  • Yeah, Ikey is great, really contributes a lot to the music . . .

  • psychedelic!!

  • This video is from 2002.

  • It doesn't matter, this video was filmed after the album was recorded; so it still accurately shows that Cedric can't sing live at all, but somehow manages to pull it off in the studio.

When it was filmed doesn't matter, if it was filmed between recordings of him singing good, it implies that he cannot sing by himself when it comes down to it.

Plus he always looks hella stoned, I don't even think he knows that he's on a stage.

  • The point is that he can clearly sing by himself onstage today. Although I would agree that he still doesn't sound as good as he does in the studio, and probably never will, he does a pretty good job of it. Go watch a more recent video if you want an idea of what he can do onstage. I do think his peak was 2005 though.

And yeah, there's no way he was sober.

  • the interview at the end was hilaroius

  • wow cedric sounds horrible at this performance!

i'm glad i've never seen him perform that badly

  • amazing band poor preformance!

  • Bleh, I love TMV but they were total shit live when they started out. They're amazing now live though. I'd like to see them preform some of their old stuff now that Cedric has more control over his voice for TMV songs.

  • his voice is so bad on this.

  • Wow, he didn't warm up his voice, i hate when that shit happens. They've done better shows.

  • This is your voice on heroine.

  • how times have changed lol

  • D:

    drugs anyone???

  • wow i dont understand anything from listening to this music...

  • listen to the album version..

and listen to some more complex music such as jazz and fusion.. it will really open your ears!

  • u dont even know me. "open up your ears" jazz? buddy jazz? have you heard of Al Di Meola??? Return to Forever? i've been to there concerts. thats real music.

  • dude I was givin you an advise

    chill out

are you stupid? do you want me to star saying name of bands you never heard (and never will) in your hole entire life?

The Mars Volta is just the best band when it comes to heavier kinds of music.. it as latin, rock, punk, hardcore, jazz, flamego and so on and so on all at once

  • Yeahh!! Omar is amazing guy

  • yep thats the scientific way of determining wether or not a band is good....WRONG thers is no way to do that. if you couldnt enjoy the vocals then listen to amazing flawlelss drumming, the guitar, the fucking keyboards for fucks sake you've gotta know nothing about music to not notice those and just focus on the vocals... tisk tisk tisk

  • oh my f***ing god. if you diss on one more MV vid, i will ruin you inside and out.

  • mate, if you dont like the mars volta then dont watch their videos

no one cares about your jack shit opinions its youtube ffs

  • You know maybe its just because the camera or something couldnt get all the sound or some crap like that. Anyways...look up their performance on letterman it sounds way better.

  • his voice is the let down here, he usually performs EVEN BETTER than this (believe it or not) and manages to keep his amazing voice. he's usually incredible.

  • This is why the Volta quit doing crazy drugs, this is what comes out of it

  • Jeez that was bad. I saw them in April and I have to say it was about a thousand time more intense than this and a billion times better sounding.

  • ok i know they're known for their wild concerts and heavy drug use but at least be wild and not sing like ur on heavy drug use damnit! You have to be high to think he sounds good in this video.

  • Cedric and Omar both quit the acid because a friend of theirs overdosed and died... so yeah, this is very old... go see them nowadays.

  • the singer licks balls live!!!

  • ON SECOND THOUGHT...i really like this performance and i think his voice is appropriate. sorry for generalizing.

  • for some reason the video recordings of live shows sound terrible. i thought he sounded great in chicago a couple weeks ago.

  • Well, actually, this was back before Cedric stopped acid and all that crap... so really, his vocals are much better nowadays.

  • yeah cause acid affects your vocal chords so much... ID suggest it would be the smack more than anything else... don't knock acid with your arbitrary drug analysis bullshit...

  • He fucking admitted to playing better performances nowadays thanks to stopping acid. He said in am interview all about how his friend's death from overdosing influenced him to stop and how he feels he is doing a much better job nowadays. Acid affected him badly in live performances, just look the shit up.

  • No, it was from stopping smack that he started to sing better.

    fucking prick.

  • He fucking claimed what I said, research it dipshit.

  • Yeah he's now singing crappy music better instead of singing great music crappy.

  • Umm, Bedlam In Goliath had some amazing songs in it, so i have no idea what you are talking about here.

  • to be honest i think the lead singer sounds terrible live.recorded he is amazing

  • Yeah...I have to agree.

  • como han evolucionado!!! tmv es admirable

  • An earlier version of this song?

Or is it just missing Son et Lumierre?

  • *RIP Jeremy Ward*

  • cedrics hair looks pretty bad ass right here!!

better then how he has it now! :)

  • ? no his hairs fukin crazy now its like a freakin lions mane, but i dont care how he looks tho; his voice is so fukin amazing now compared to this

  • he may sing high but he's lost his soul, there's no passion in his voice any more.

  • the mane is pretty epic but the fro was great.

And yeah he sings heaps better now, but he doesnt go as nutts on stage unfortunatley.

  • Are you crazy? I just saw them live in chicago 4/20 and he was going nuts the entire show. I don't know what you've been watching.

  • I suppose he still goes 'nuts' to a degree lol, I dunno.. it just doesnt seem as intense to me, it was probbably the drugs aye.

But yeah, Im seeing them in June which will be great.

  • i'm loving cedric look right here

  • I live in Düsseldorf. No one cares, I know.

  • haha, gut zu wissen! ;)

  • what year was this?

  • this is incredible. a concert in düsseldorf, onr year before the debut was released...

  • i actually have a dvd and cd with these songs!

    its so cool!

...just gotta find it in my room*tear*

  • can you upload it once you find it plz?

  • can you tell us what's the name of it? thxs

  • energy bomb!, its fucking awesome!

  • Lol nice!
