  • Best rendition of the Olympic Anthem I've heard so far.

That was really moving to say the least *sniffles*

  • @randomdrifter agreed

  • @password45671

It's the best rendition of it, because it's sung in the language it was intended. Greek. At every Summer Games, Greece is to parade first, its flag be hoisted with that of the host country and the Olympic flag and its national anthem is to be sung. The respect to Greece during an Olympic Opening must always be shown for it it weren't for the Olympians, (my dad's village :D) and Barron Pierre de Coubertan, there wouldn't be a Modern Games at all!

  • @kyriakosd in every winter games Greece too always comes first.

  • I love the music they play while the flag is being carried in, it's really beautiful.

  • my mom is greek

  • Olympic athletes are carrying the flag in Athens. This was not the case in Vancouver as entertainers and non Olympic athletes carried the flag. Bravo Athens!! Opa!!!

  • @rcedarpointfan Vancouver actually had a mix of accomplished Canadians (actors, singers, military, scientists, humanitarians, athletes, etc) but the Winter Games tradition is somewhat different than the Summer Games. Salt Lake had all famous people and Torino had all famous women from a variety of fields. Personally, I prefer the former Olympian tradition of the Summer Games. But each ceremony tries to be different in some way. And all are enjoyable.

  • @nosuchpersonvideo

The recent Olympics ceremonies and atmosphere (with the exception of the one in Singapore) were incredible to say the least =)

It was wonderful seeing cities coming to life celebrating the Olympic Games. Caught the Athens one on TV, and was there for the one in Vancouver 2010 =)

  • Δεν έχει κανέναν ποτέ για τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες;

  • i liked the 04 olympics. my mom is from greece

  • Vancouver 2010 was the best, but this was the best rendetion of the anthem.

  • oh yes i was singing there...

  • Brilliant! Absolutely the best ceremony! Thanks for sharing! We've included a link to this on a post about the composer John Psathas on our blog Global Greek World as saw that embedding has been disabled. Shame -would love to embed... :)

  • I love this part...really well donne..so classy..much better than 2008!

  • For me, beijing olympic is the most breathtaking and so as in Sydney

  • Se deus existe deve ser parecido com isso!

If God exists it must be like this!

    Incrível!!

  • Poetry - Palamas

    Music - Samaras

    Incredible piece, incredibly performed.

  • china....friend of greek people

  • wtanoto you are wright...BEST OLYMPIC EVER...

  • Can anyone tell me what the music Starting at 00:23 is?

  • sounds a little bit like the "dance of the knights" from Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet",but it's not.

  • @blinktheworld33 The music is from the song "Sta pervolia" by Mikis Theodorakis.

  • my dear audition1992 the olympic anthem is much more older than the Nagano winter olympics. So probably the Nagano's tune is similar. And as far as i know summer and winter olympics have the same anthem.

  • some nations use their native language. some not even that.

it should be the same anthem everytime. and in greek ;)

  • of course the same..

both supervised by IOC and the anthem is IOC anthem...

  • lots of "anti" China comments (as usual). The Chinese version was beautiful. The first to drive me near to tears (before I felt the Olympic Hymn a "technicality"). With each turn comes a new perspective. Beautifully done in Greece, even more amazing in Beijing!

  • Very beautiful song! Really is some piece of music that gives you goosebumps.

  • the best...

  • I can't wait for Athens 2011 Special Olympic Games!!

  • the tune was very similar in Nagano winter olympics

  • Great Song.

    Very Greek too.

  • And please note the Greeks so far are the only ones to be able to sing it, or at least parts of it, WITHOUT instrumental accompaniment.

  • uh.

    ok?

  • As a choral singer, I can tell you that it is VERY difficult to sing a piece like this in harmony unaccompanied without going off pitch. However, they managed it here, probably because unaccompanied singing is the norm in the Greek Orthodox religious tradition. Well done.

  • It is a pity that you can hardly find any English introduction to the chinese choir, since the full name is Children and Young Woman's Choir of China National Symphony Orchestra, which is too long that it is always called China children's choir or Beijing children's choir for short when they give performances all over the world. Ask somebody around you who have a good taste of chorus maybe they will give you more information about them

  • As a Greek I just say I am proud that chinese children managed to do it very well too.

  • What the hell are u talking about? Are you deaf? CHINESE children sing the whole anthem without instrumental accompaniment!!! How ridiculous u wrote "Greeks so far are the only ones..." Actually, you should change your sentence as "CHINESE are the only ones so far...." since Greeks were accompanied with the instrumental melody through the second part at Athens 2004... Furthermore Chinese children did not even have a conductor, but Greeks had! JUST AMAZING! The best so far! Jia You Zhongguo!

  • Given the revelation that the one girl was dubbed since the original singer was dubbed insufficiently attractive in appearance, I think the Chinese performance is suspect. And no, I am not deaf. And I am not changing what I wrote.

  • Well, children in the Chinese choir are trained for at least 5 years before their debut. Hence the only requirement is no taller than 1.65m haha. I am not joking, it is true. You can't even suspect the performance since they are real as the air around you.

  • I don't like the dubbed girl either. She sucks!

  • He wrote that bcos at that time China not yet host the Olympics. "So far" means b4 China. B4 2008

• It's not all that amazing. Any children could sing it without instrumental accompaniment after reheasing it adequately, no matter what their nationality. Skip the jingoism. And besides, I like it better WITH instrumental accompaniment. This is not to take anything away from the Chinese kids -- they were great.

  • the chineese did a pretty good job too!!

  • i like athens 2004, it is original sauce and original taste, also beijing 2008 hosts the game in my native country, i'm so glad.

  • I wish you great Games.

Greeting from the Motherland of Olympic Games to the friendly people of China.

  • Everyone should sing it in Greek!

  • i got tingles

  • The best Olympics ever have been Barcelona '92, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. Sadly Beijing 2008 has not reached this status since we already have politics problems mixed with sports that remind us the games from 70's and 80's.

  • Sydney and Athens are the best for me!

  • how could u not like Atlanta

  • I like Atlanta/Salt Lake too.

  • I say we boycott Beijing inasmuch as they violate every human right in the book and are overdeveloping their resources! Also, they make Wal-Marts there have a Communist Party chapter! That's why I don't go there!

  • Politics shouldn't be part of sports! Olympics are bringing peace and harmony no politics.

  • Brabusomara, you really can't avoid politics in sports. They've gone hand in hand since the days of the Ancient Olympics, to the Coliseum in Rome, to the modern Olympic Games. I'm not saying we should outright boycott Beijing's Games, but it's just unavoidable for politics to make itself into such a large, international event, and it's not always such a bad thing either - think both Korean teams marching together at the Opening Ceremonies. That's positive politics right there!

  • i agree, you cant have an event where hundreds of countries around the world are participating, and hundreds of thousands of people from the globe come to watch and take part without politics, it just cant hapen, not in todays day and age;

  • get over it!!!

  • overdeveloping their resources??? well said, but wait i bet u live in a developed country anyway. what a joke u are.

  • not really Sydney and Athens!!

  • this is the best rendition of the Olmypic anthem ever.

  • Thank you Greece, for hosting such a wonderful events in 2004, for giving the world a chance to celebrate the lights of humanity together once more.

Let us together hope that there will be another equally wonderful time next year in Beijing!

  • Outstanding ceremony

  • U do kno that Psathas is a NZer?

  • Did someone know, who composed and how to get the song that played while the flag is circling the stadium and before the olympic hymn starts ?

  • Its John Psathas arrangment of THEODORAKIS " Sta Pervolia".

Put Theodorakis at the search and u will find even better music from him!!

    i hope i helped!!!

  • if you remember noone believed greece could host the olympics :)

  • Yes written by Spiros Samaras for the 1896 games.

  • I have to agree here.

  • Great Olympics.. The International Olympic Anthem is by greek Samaras right..? If anyone can help me.. thanx

  • yes samaras is greek

  • Furthermore was from Corfu, as it was Nikolaos Mantzaros the composer of the Greek National Anthem.

  • Correction: "IT will always be"! Not I.

  • Lillehammer, 1994 was the best olympic ever, I will always be!

  • i can see why... you're from norway :)

without thinking of the country, I think Athens 2004 is the best, and I even doubt that beijing can surpass it

  • nothing and nobody can surpass hellas!!!!!

  • @wtanoto Vancouver was better!!

  • ATHENS GREECE!!!!the best olympics ever!!!!JEALOUSY KIILS!!!!

  • KILLS!

  • I like Norwegian people because the call Greece with the original name: Hellas.

Jeg er meget glad for det :-)

    Hilsen fra Hellas.

  • Greeks were originally a tribe from Thessaly.Hellenes were originally a tribe from Thessaly too, before the name came to describe our whole nation. But the first of our people that came in touch with Romans must have been greek colonists(in the sense of the tribe) and that's why they learned to use that name. And through latin most Europeans learned to call us Greeks, just like in the East we are called Younan,Yawan and names like that, deriving from the name of Ionians, another greek tribe

  • My point is:I don't think there is a thing like an original name for Greece.

  • Yes i agree, i think i should have used the term official (instead of original) since this is the official diplomatic term and is written on our passports. Some times i have trouble with some stupid employees in Airport checkin..

  • Isn't our official name the Hellenic Republic?

  • Check your new passport where it says country of origin....

  • @theme45 you are an always idiota
