Take me back to the Academy of Music late shows---they would play until the sun came up and nothing, nothing could be better than heading home on the LIRR with hundreds of other buzzed Tuna heads.
I saw Hot Tuna many times. The best concert I ever saw was in 1977 for my 1st wedding anniversary that my friend had bought us tickets for. It was at he academy of music in NY and WNEW played it live on the radio. We had front row center seats. It lasted forever, but wasn't long enough. Thanks for the post.
I just turned 20 when this was recorded; but I met Jack Cassidy; was backstage @ Winterland & Fillmore West for a lot of their concerts. Great times in the late '60's 7 early '70's!!
Right! Starship itself was an offshoot of Airplane. The first (unofficial) Starship album was Kantner and Slick's 1970 album "Blows Against The Empire", which predated the breakup of Airplane and was released under the banner of Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship.. At the time, the Starship was the informal collective of musicians who contributed to the album, including Jack Cassidy, Jerry Garcia, Joey Covington, Peter Kaukonen, David Crosby, Graham Nash and others.
I saw Hot Tuna in '72 at Winterland in SF. They came on at 8:45 and did not leave the stage until after 3am. It was on of the best shows I ever went to. Papa was there and jumping with his style, rip Papa. Thanks for the post
Saw Hot never had what JA did but Papa John played with both. Breaking frTuna as the opening act for JA where both Jack and Jorma played again. They loved the blues JA songs like "Good Shepard" finally breaking away. Papa John played on the Baron Von Tollbooth album with Jerry Garcia playing some guitar. Gracie learned to use her voice as an overlay on vocals like Papa John did with melody.
Jorma in his early career made the Typewriter tapes with Janis Joplin. Cassidy jammed with Hendrix who also played with Janis. Hendrix hearing Leslie West went to a warehouse in Manhattan to play bass for him to see what he had. Musicians then partied and jammed together putting their heads together enjoying each other. Been to a few concerts at the Fillmore East midnight shows where after the encore bands would call musicians from other bands onstage to jam, late shows were a favorite.
@JimboLAngeloMysterio 2 different styles of music you cannot compare boogie blues with what the airplane did. All you say is Jorma,Jack, & Papa John were exceptional musicians who could play any fucking style of music they wanted to.
Thanks for this. I was at the show, (age 12 at the time) and I have never forgotten it. It was my first rock concert. That balcony was shaking, and smelling rather aromatic as I recall.
I "broke my cherry" on Hot Tuna at this concert. I was 15. As this was my "first" Hot Tuna Concert, I was there when this was recorded. They brought the house down with "Keep on Trucking". Commander Cody and The Lost Planet Airmen were the opening act (Smoke That Cigarette). It was my first and only time I was at Carnegie Hall. What a great venue for my first concert. Poppa John was incredible.
@MyInnerEyeMike99 --It was the Friday before Easter. My friends and I were looking for something to do that evening. We had a copy of the Village Voice which had a full page ad promoting the show. I didn't even know who Hot Tuna was, but my friend (older) said they were the guys from Airplane. With that , how bad could the show be? What an understatement. We bought balcony tickets for $5.50 at the door. Their sound became riveted to my soul. Hot Tuna is my band 40 years now. Hot F'n Tuna!
@MyInnerEyeMike99 Carnegie Hall was seething with the desire for Hot Tuna and a major profusion of weed. Smoking (not weed) was allowed in the hallways and lobbies. The sound was not bad in these places. We were hooked up with some hard core Tuna fans with a stash of hash. The place was a fog of dope fumes. Every so often we'd duck into the balcony lobby for a few hits on the pipe. Security was not used to rock fans and they were all over the place trying in vain to extinguish the flames.
@MyInnerEyeMike99 The Carnegie Hall Show contained highly seasoned first and eager and willing novice second generation fans like myself and company. The crowd seemed regal and noble. The seasoned fans ushered in kindly the inexperienced, the seekers and the lost. There was a sense of community and unified spirit within this crowd. No one in that crowd was alone. They were special, a rare breed--they were "Tuna fans". These souls spirited this unique event.
@drgrady5489 I saw them in 1971 and again in 2011 Papa John was awesome and now he's gone it is a sad thing, but they are still playing KickAss music. Papa John approves and is still there in spirit.

Thanks MyInnerEyeMike99 for this awesome upload. That was my first Hot Tuna Show back when I was 17. I just recently saw acoustic Hot Tuna @ the Fur Peace Ranch here in SE Ohio. Great show in 72 and their still going strong after 39 years of rockin.....
Another GEM from the Hot Tuna archives. This time Casady is center stage with a massive FAT bass mix. High point for me is "Down Home Blues" when Jack plays a great chunky bass line at 1.02.42 with accompanying tempo change.

@HackerGuitarist Actually, it's an offshoot of Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Starship came a bit later on. Hot Tuna started in 1969.
