this is awesome..thank you. it really helps because i have a friend who just moved here from china who works in a Chinese restaurant so now I can say stuff to him in Chinese. : )
when you go to a restaurant and everything on the menu is numbered, in english you'd say "I want number 10", so in mandarin can you just say: wo yao shi... or do you need to say: wo yao [number?] shi? Or how should you word it correctly? And do you need to say "please", if so how?
Good video for beginners. But wouldn't you say "Lai yi bei shui" or "Lai yi ge pijiu ba". Since it's implied that you want something? I donno, just how I learned.
The thing that drives me bonkers about Mandarin is that there are so many homonyms (words that sound the same but have a different meaning). Because of this I just cannot seem to grasp the language. Especially understanding is a big problem. Any tips?
You just have to keep pushing on. As you mention the PinYin for a word such as shi can have over 40 meanings but you also have to remember that there are only 1600 words based on pinyin. That seems like a lot of words repeat but in actuality they don't. For instance shi can mean yes, or it can mean rock. But when you say yes you will say "shi de" and when you say rock it will be "shi tou." So don't let the first few lessons in learning confuse you.
Don't try to translate your language to another language. You have to actually *THINK* in the new language.
Just push on and after you start using your vocabulary it will make more sense. As Yoda said you must unlearn what you have learned. While I haven't picked up any Jedi skills, by not referencing your mother language you will learn a new language much faster.
You're right; we tend to think too much in our mother tongue, which for me by the way is Dutch. Actually, knowing another language can help a too. There are many words I can associate with Dutch. For example Mao Zi (hat). In Dutch "Muts" means Beanie, which is also a type of hat, so that's how I remember that word.
Dong Tian. Dong sounds like "Donker" in Dutch, which means "Dark". Winters are always dark. Chun Tian. Chun sounds like "June", which is the last month of spring in the Northern Hem. Qiu Tian. Qiu sounds like Jiu (nine) which is the 9th month (september). That's when autumn begins. Xia Tian. Dutch summers are always wet. Xia is rain. All are 1st tone, except for Xia, but rain comes down, so does the tone on Xia.
