I don't understand what he's proving with this apology; the quotation, like any strong words, speak infinitely about John Mayer's "candid" manner. He felt loose, at the Playboy mansion, or however this interview was taken, and he allowed his ego to speak for him. Naive, perhaps, and only now realizing it.
Just a thought: This reminds me of Elvis, who also had a few black musicians and singers in the band on stage touring with him, but it didn't stop him from making some degrading comments about that race in interviews; just to be as clever as John Mayer wanted to be and to get more fans.

@Kussinator basically john made what seems to many people derogatory statements about black women, and why he's not attracted to them. he also used the word 'nigger' in his interview when referring to his relationship with black musicians and black audiences..and he made explicit comments about his sexual relationship with jessica simpson, which in many people's eyes was considered too much information

I went to this concert with my son. The next day, some people at work mentioned the apology for his saying the "N" word, and I didn't know what they were talking about. They thought I was crazy, because I was there, but he didn't give a clue as to what he was talking about! Now watching this video proves my point. He was so sketchy.

John is guilty of being a human. He made a mistake, and now he is saying sorry. Sounds like he is not demanding people to forgive him, but just owning up to what he really was guilty of: Being a media jerk. I think it is pretty obvious he is not a racist, but he thought what he was saying would be funny and edgy. He was wrong. Many people do this, not just John. It is easy to forget how others react to the things you say, and as a public figure everything you say will be highly scrutinized.

I'm black and I read the interview and don't think it was racist really. I mean, yes he said the 'n' word but he wasn't using it as a term or a name, more as a concept. Like saying that the black community is cool with him....but at the same time they aren't cool with him enough for him to jokingly say 'n' this or 'n' that like blacks will do with each other. I think it just got misconstrued and the media ran with it.

Apology was a good thing, but if it had come from somebody that was in their teens or early 20s, not someone in their 30s, it might not seem quite so embarrassing and ridiculous.

Actually they did NOT ask him about his preference to black women. They asked him if bw threw themselves at him and he deflected by saying that he himself is not open to being with a bw. So he went out of his way to throw us under the bus. That's what makes it even more messed up. If they had asked about his preference it would have been bad enough but they didn't even ask that. He offered to tell the world how undateable and unworthy he thinks we are, free of charge.

Sounds like he is not demanding people to forgive him, but just owning up to what he really was guilty of: Being a media jerk. I think it is pretty obvious he is not a racist, but he thought what he was saying would be funny and edgy. He was wrong. Many people do this, not just John. Every black person in America CANNOT seem to let go of the slavery thingy, like the south can't let go of losing to the north in the civil war.. This however makes 'em bitter and and resentful for life. Makes 'em hold a grudge inside that they can't seem to let go of. So this makes the blacks hate the whites like the south hates the north. Actually, u ppl are putting words in his mouth. As far as dating black women he said "I dont think I open myself up to it". Ok and?? Thats horrible? Maybe he is not putting himself in a position to attempt it. He then said he is gonna start dating separately from his d*ck, which means he may be open to it. Stop twisting things around people. Thinking over my earlier analogy, might have not been the best. Anyways, I stand by him and am proud of the way he has dealt with it thus far. I am still thrilled to be seeing him in concert later this month and next month. True fans like myself will continue to buy his music and attend his concerts. Not only do we enjoy his music, his sense of humor, but believe that he is a good person who says stupid stuff sometimes. Just like the rest of us. I still love you John!!

John is human like all of us. He is acknowledging his actions and that is huge. I personally still love him. He is so talented and has a great sense of humor. This should have totally not have been precieved as racist. Fist of all it was in Playboy and he was apparently asked about his preferance to black woman. I'm sure if you would have asked him how he felt about men or animals he would have told the truth. Would that have been discrimating towards gays or cruel to animals?

Your OPIONION is respected as should mine be. I have read the article and don't still don't see the huge deal. Maybe I am used to hearing him in many interviews & concerts. I get is humor or attempt at it at least, in fact that makes him more endearing. As far as the apology being all about him, who did you want him to talk about? Tiger Woods? Seriously? Actually they did NOT ask him about his preference to black women. They asked him if bw threw themselves at him and he deflected by saying that he himself is not open to being with a bw. So he went out of his way to throw us under the bus. That's what makes it even more messed up. If they had asked about his preference it would have been bad enough but they didn't even ask that. He offered to tell the world how undateable and unworthy he thinks we are, free of charge.

I feel so bad for John. Nobody is perfect, and he is ALWAYS in the public eye. Yes, he has a big mouth, but people forget how much pressure he is under. His tour is basically non-stop from Feb. 1st-April 10th. Almost every night....in different states. And if you have gone to this tour, you will see how much energy he has to put into each and every show. It would make anyone go crazy. Everyone needs to give him a break. We love you John.
